Embark on the epic 431 km (268 mile) hike along the Pennine Way on this 21-day itinerary of England. Beginning in Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District, the route traverses some of England’s most scenic countryside before finishing just over the border in Scotland. While each day of this 18-day walk has its own rewards, there are some major highlights. Bookworms will appreciate the section from Withens Height End to Top Withens—forever synonymous with Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. The trail passes through Yorkshire Dales National Park, which includes some of the most strenuous days of walking — but the scenery makes it worth the effort as you pass through lush dales or valleys and traverse windswept heather moors. You’ll also come across Tan Hill, home of England’s highest pub. Take time to cozy up with a pint at this remote 17th century inn. Follow Hadrian’s Wall and hike through part of Northumberland National Park, passing some of the best preserved sections of wall and the ruins of Thirlwell Castle. The final leg is through the rolling Cheviot Hills where you’ll hike along the exposed border ridge, passing in and out of Scotland before finally reaching the charming town of Kirk Yetholm.
