Great tour director . Peru wonderful and trip well planned. Santiago was a bit of an anti climax after leaving the wonders of Peru , however still great and Valparaiso and wine tour fabulous. Buenos Aires amazing and it would have been great to have had an extra night. Some days we had way too much food so was a bit of a waste. Maybe cut down on a couple of the dinners. The restaurant in Cusco sensational but our final dinner in Rio was terrible. It was a bit annoying having set menus with only a couple of choices especially when you read their menu online but don’t get to experience the full range of food. I understand this can be difficult for the restaurants but they should be able to cater for large groups. Our guides were all brilliant and accomodation was fabulous. Loved the hotel in Santiago but Cusco a bit of a let down. We had a very small room at Iguazú Falls. I found the room variations in the group at the same hotel could be a bit unfair but this happened only a couple of times. These are only minor points. This was an amazing trip and it is one I will remember for a very long time. Well done Lucury Gold

This was an amazing tour. The quality, knowledge and caring from all the guides was sensational particularly . The pace was perfect with multiple night stays giving time to enjoy each location. My only critism is that although the quality of the food was fabulous there were some days that I felt there was just too much, particularly days when there was both an included lunch and dinner. The most disappointing meal was the fair well dinner in Rio. I would not recommend Luxury Gold using it again. This was the second Luxury Gold tour I have done and I will certainly look forward to another in the future. The quality is always excellent and I would recommend the tour to anyone interested in enjoying the culture and scenery of South America.

A wonderful first-class trip! Awesome itinerary, top hotels, superb concierge and all the stress of handling luggage and airport hassles taken out of our hands to make it a fantastic holiday. The guides and local tours were great. I enjoyed every minute.

Booking with Explore is easy and straightforward. The ability to log in to your account to add and check details is excellent. Explore are always keeping you up to date with your trip. My trip to Peru was amazing. Wonderful country, landscapes, food, culture. The Explore itinerary captures all the highlights without the hassle of organising yourself. Julio was a great tour leader. Friendly, funny, well organised and professional. We didn't have to worry about anything with Julio looking after us.

We had a fantastic trip to Peru and the Amazon Jungle. Our guide in Peru, Lyss, was amazing. So helpful and very knowledgeable. There were no questions she could not answer. Also there were problems with some flights and lost luggage and Lyss kept in touch and helped sort out all the issues for everyone in a very efficient and effective way. I would absolutely recommend Lyss as a fantastic and lovely guide.

Lima is the beginning and okay. Flying to Cusco and seeing the sacred valley got our experience really going. Staying at the renovated monastery was wonderful! Arriving in Machu Picchu was phenomenal, words can't express the beauty and seeing the fascinating work of the Inca people.

Lima - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Tour Highlights

  • Lima is the best place to sample Peruvian cuisine and you can find everything from simple street food to gourmet dishes prepared by celebrity chefs. Look out for ceviche (raw fish with citrus juice), lomo saltado (Chinese-influenced stir-fried beef) and anticuchos (skewers of barbecued meat, traditionally beef heart).
  • Visit the city’s excellent museums including the Museo Larco with its collection of pre-Colombian erotic pottery, the Museo Nacional de Arqueología, Antropología e Historia del Perú and the Museo de Arte Lima.
  • Hunt down the Bridge of Sighs, one of Lima’s most famous landmarks.
  • Check out the many splendid examples of colonial architecture.
  • Search for bargains at the Mercado Central.
  • Visit the catacombs beneath the Museo de la Iglesia y Convento San Francisco. Lima’s former subterranean cemeteries hold the remains of up to 70,000 individuals.

Travel Tips

  • Travel like a local in shared minibuses known as combis. Flag one down and pay the conductor when you get on or off.
  • Tipping is only expected in expensive restaurants – but if you feel the service is outstanding, a small tip is always appreciated.
  • Lima is not especially dangerous but use common sense. Tourist areas are mostly safe but areas to avoid include San Juan de Lurigancho, Los Olivos, Comas, Vitarte and El Agustino, especially at night. Avoid flaunting expensive jewelry and above all, beware of pickpockets.
  • Important festivals include the Carnaval in February and Fiesta de Santa Rosa held on on 30 August every year.
  • Peru uses two types of electric plug, round-pronged ones like in Europe and flat-pronged ones; both run at 220 volts. Best to take an adapter.

This list is not exhaustive and there are many more things to do in Lima! If you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru , do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.
