About Genius Loci Travel

Genius Loci Travel – the leading Italian specialist for walking, cycling & kayaking tours !

Genius Loci Travel is a fully-licensed Italian tour operator, operating under EU law. It was founded in 2001 as one of the first Italian tour operators specialized in walking & cycling tours.

Nowadays, there are many new outfitters, but be aware that the internet and social media have enabled many small, often inexperienced companies to look very impressive. Our knowledge of Italy and experience in organising tours are a guarantee for our clients!

Starting back in 1999 we have developed many walking tours & cycling trips, among which the first walking tours along the Amalfi Coast (when the ‘Path of the Gods’ was still unknown).

In the beginning we worked mainly on behalf of other specialized tour operators, in the UK, France, Germany, Australia and The Netherlands, on behalf of whom we developed some of the most successful walking tours ever – in terms of numbers, but also of clients’ satisfaction!

While continuing to do that, we now also handle private clients who can book one of our self-guided tours directly (which we can customise), or on behalf of whom we can also organise tailor-made bespoke group adventures.

For almost two decades, Genius Loci Travel has handled thousands of satisfied clients.

Genius Loci Travel S.r.l. is registered in Italy, Business Register No. 32136. Our registered address & head office is: Via Antonio Rotondo 5, 84127 Salerno - Italy.

Why Book With Genius Loci Travel

Our Commitment to You: Responsible & sustainable tourism All our trips are run as ‘responsible’ and ‘sustainable’ as possible— socially, culturally, economically and environmentally. Quality Genius Loci Travel neither aims to offer the most luxurious tours, neither the cheapest. But, we do give the best value for money. Compare our tours & prices to those of other outfitters (and check where we stay and what is included). Satisfaction We started to sell our tours directly upon demand from our customers and still rely very heavily on word-of-mouth and repeat custom for our bookings. Our clients know that we give them the best holiday experience possible. Financial security We provide complete financial security for all our clients and adhere to all regulations concerning the safety of our clients’ money. Feedback At the end of every trip, we provide our clients with a questionnaire that we ask to fill in. Our clients’ feedback is used to continuously improve the quality of our holidays (or maintain the quality of our ‘perfect’ tours). Exclusivity We specialise only in Italy and are able to offer a more extensive programme of walking and cycling tours than anyone else in our country. Many of our tours are ‘originals’, designed & developed by our staff members. These are meticulously researched routes across many of the most inspiring parts of Italy. Often imitated, never equaled!

Had a wonderful time.

Thank you for all your help, and the office staff. Overall, we had a lovely time. The scenery of the Cilento National Park is spectacular. Walking holidays are very popular now and people are always looking for new places to walk. We will certainly recommend the area to our friends, with the proviso they check out the current state of the trails if they are going to do walking. We are thinking of doing a cycle tour in Puglia at some stage in the future, and will definitely keep your company in mind. One final point regarding the accommodation. We particularly liked B&B Vittoria as the owners were very accommodating and friendly & sat down to dinner with us which was a great opportunity to practice our conversational Italian. All the best.

Unfortunately, our amazing holiday in Italy came to an end! It was definitely one of our best holidays ever, thank you so much for your perfect organisation, planning and detailed explanation. It could not have been better! We enjoyed every second of it! We wish you a lot of success for the future and hope to travel soon again!!

We felt that the trip in general was wonderful, with a very good choice of hotels, and some great hikes that we would never have found on our own. We love being in Italy and felt that you offer a great service to people who want active and involved travel

Thank you for a great time!

I am finally back in a chilly Cape Town having had the most blissful break. It was truly great to meet all of you and thank you for the most wonderful week. I shall have abiding memories of our week together. Who can forget all the lovely pasta, piadini, large caprese salads, pizza, beer, ros and ice cream with great cycling and magnificent scenery to boot. The fruits and flowers of Italy will also always stay with me. A huge thank you to you Peter bellissimo, molto bello! Love to you all.

The Heart of the Cilento National Park trip - alternative tour available
Step into the tranquil heart of southern Italy with The Heart of the Cilento National Park walking tour. Over nine days, you’ll explore untouched forests, serene river valleys, and ancient mountain villages, following scenic routes through one of Italy’s largest and least-visited national parks. The journey is rich in cultural gems, from cave churches and medieval castles to rural chapels and traditional farmhouses. This self-guided walking tour is perfect for those seeking solitude, natural beauty, and authentic Italian heritage, with the unique selling point being its access to Cilento’s hidden treasures—far from the usual tourist trails.

Via Francigena: Walk from Lucca to Siena trip - alternative tour available
Discover the Tuscan countryside and culture on this 8-day self-guided walking tour. Through the extensive footpath network of the area, roughly following the traces of the Via Francigena, one of Europe’s most important ‘highways’ in medieval times, you walk from village to village and experience a full immersion in the world-famous Tuscan landscape. The tour is perfect as an introduction to the region and a great choice for people who love museums, galleries and Gothic and Romanesque architecture. You have plenty of time to visit attractions on most of the days. You will also have time to visit all the beautiful medieval villages and historic towns along the Via Francigena: starting from beautiful Lucca, you’ll pass through Fucecchio, San Miniato, Gambassi Terme, the stunning San Gimignano with its medieval skyscrapers and Monteriggioni, admired by Dante in his Divine Comedy. An optional detour can bring you to beautiful Colle Val d’Elsa and the tour ends in Siena, arguably the most perfectly preserved medieval town in Tuscany. This tour threads together some of the most attractive towns and villages in Tuscany in an eloquent procession. However, the emphasis of the tour is to enjoy the countryside, the rolling vineyards, the poppies in spring and the wild cyclamen in autumn. The area north of Siena is an amazing landscape of rolling hills, alternating vineyards and forests, while cypresses line the way leading to the distant farmhouses. Walking here is an unforgettable experience and many of the views have barely changed for hundreds of years. Accommodation and some meals are included. You spend a night in one of the best agriturismos in Tuscany, and the final night in the heart of Siena, in one of the most characteristic little hotels. This is a moderately easy tour which is suitable for those who have some experience of walking and a good general physical condition.
