Introducing Uruguay

Nestled between Argentina, Brazil, and the Atlantic Ocean, Uruguay is among the most underrated countries in South America. However, this lack of prominence can be a good thing if you want to see and experience the most authentic side of Latin America without being overwhelmed by the tourist rush. Soak up the sun at the crystal-blue beaches of Cabo Polonio, relax in the hot springs in Salto and Paysandú, marvel at the architecture of Solis Theater (maybe even attend an opera show), or visit the popular Estancia La Aurora, renowned for its unique energy that is said to attract UFOs. Whether you want to immerse yourself in Uruguay's lush nature or explore its culture and tradition, contact our local travel experts, who can create a customized Uruguay tour based on your unique preferences.

When to go to Uruguay?

The best time to visit Uruguay is between December and March when temperatures are mild and precipitation is low. During this period, you can participate in the Carnival celebrations that take over the entire country. Alternatively, you can make the most of the great weather by opting for a hike in the unique Lunarejo Valley, renowned for its 150 species of birds.

If you want to escape the high-season crowds, head to Uruguay between April and June. While temperatures tend to be slightly chillier during this period, water temperatures are higher than during the peak tourist season. This makes these months ideal for those wanting to swim or snorkel on the breathtaking beaches of Carrasco or Punta del Diablo in Jose Ignacio.

How long to stay in Uruguay?

Ideal custom Uruguay tours can help you discover the whole country in as little as five days by taking you to its capital, Montevideo, and nearby picturesque towns, such as the UNESCO-listed Colonia del Sacramento. However, we recommend you spend at least 10 days in the country to properly immerse yourself in its history and culture. In your 10-day Uruguay itinerary, you can even include a private wine-tasting session in Canelones. Those with no time restrictions can opt for a two-week personalized tour to Uruguay, which includes visits to national parks, such as the Esteros de Farrapos National Park, and tours of popular museums, like the National Museum Of Visual Arts and the Museo del Carnaval.

Must-visit destinations in Uruguay

Here are some of the top destinations to visit in Uruguay:

  • Montevideo: Every proper Uruguay customized tour must include a visit to Montevideo, where you can explore the Museo de la Memoria and eat the best meat of your life in one of the many restaurants. Enjoy a walk on the famous Rambla, visit the Mercado del Puerto, and marvel at the unique architecture of Plaza Independencia.
  • Punta del Este: The most popular beach among surfers, Punta del Este is equipped with plenty of casinos and nightclubs. Here, you will also be able to visit the popular Isla de Lobos, home to hundreds of thousands of sea lions, and take the perfect Insta pic at the famous Mano de Punta del Este.
  • Santa Teresa National Park: Extending over 3000 hectares, this natural reserve is home to a greenhouse dating back to the 1940s, as well as several camping sites and bungalows. Visitors will also be able to explore the Fortaleza de Santa Teresa, an ancient fortress built between 1762 and 1775 by the Portuguese.
  • Fray Bentos: This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an ancient industrial complex where the renowned local meat was once produced. Here, visitors will learn everything about Uruguay’s meat production, from its sourcing to processing to packaging processes.
