Introducing Paraguay

It may not be the first country on most travelers’ lists when planning a trip to South America, but Paraguay is packed with pleasant surprises. Visit the southern region of the Jesuit ruins, which will take you back to the time missionaries and Guaraní converts worked the fields. You won’t see a single person for miles in the arid plains of the Chaco, but you can catch sight of exotic wildlife like ocelots and giant anteaters and spot birds like black-bodied woodpeckers. Beyond nature and wildlife, discover the colorful streets and iconic buildings like the Palacio de Los López in Paraguay’s capital, Asunción, with our personalized Paraguay tours. Our local travel experts will help you create the perfect Paraguay customized tours to match your interests.

When to Go to Paraguay

Paraguay has a subtropical climate and is a year-round destination. However, May to September is the best time to visit Paraguay. The monsoon months are from October to April, though mild rain can also be expected in other months. This period also sees various festivities, such as Asunción Day on the 15th of August and the Solstice Festival on the 24th of June. January and July are the hottest and coldest months, respectively. While Paraguay does not have a conventional high tourist season, summer (mid-October to March) is the busiest season for tourism.

How Long to Stay in Paraguay

With well-planned Paraguay customized tours, it is possible to get a fascinating introduction to the country in as little as 5 days. Explore Asunción, see the historic town of Trinidad and the Jesuit ruins of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná, and discover Encarnación, one of Paraguay’s prettiest cities. If you have 7 days in Paraguay, you can add Parque Nacional Ybycuí and the San Rafael Nature Reserve, famous for its howler monkeys, to the itinerary. But we recommend at least 10 days in this intriguing country for a more comprehensive tour of Paraguay. In 10 days, you can also visit Villarrica, the resort town of San Bernardino, and the colonial town of Areguá.

Must-Visit Destinations in Paraguay

Paraguay has some of the most underrated travel destinations in the world.

  • Asunción: Every good Paraguay customized tour should include a trip to the capital known for its remarkable architecture, such as the Palacio de López, and fascinating museums, such as the Museo del Barro.
  • Saltos del Monday: Located near Ciudad del Este, these spectacular waterfalls are 150 feet deep and 400 feet wide. Appreciate the powerful cascades and lush surroundings while enjoying picnics and barbecues around the area.
  • Laguna Blanca: Paraguay does not have a sea coast but Laguna Blanca is a pleasant lake-side alternative. It is also a birding destination where you can spot Kingfishers and Neotropic Cormorants.
  • Cerro Tres Kandú: This is the highest point in Paraguay and makes for a comfortable day hike. The easier routes can be completed in 2 hours as part of your Paraguay customized tours.
  • Itaipu Dam: One of the world’s largest hydroelectric facilities, Itaipu Dam on the Paraná River between Paraguay and Brazil is an engineering marvel that supplies most of Paraguay’s power needs.
