Introducing Bulgaria

It’s surprising that Bulgaria is not on the top of many travelers’ lists. Bordered by the Black Sea along one stretch, blessed with seven mountain ranges, and home to a rich history that includes Roman cities, Bulgaria is a haven for all kinds of travelers. There is the Rila Mountains for hikers, multiple ski resorts for snow-sport enthusiasts, centuries-old monasteries and churches for history buffs, and long, sandy beaches for the beach bums.

When to go to Bulgaria

Spring (April and May) is the peak season when it comes to Bulgaria. This is when the weather is pleasant and wildflowers blossom in the countryside. The months of September and October are just as charming. Together, these months are considered the best time to enjoy a Bulgarian vacation because temperatures are mild and crowds are few. Just in case you cannot make it to this Balkan country in spring or fall, you might want to head there in summer, from June to August. Temperatures during this time of year might be hot, but summer is gorgeous, nevertheless. If you like hitting the slopes, plan a personalized jaunt to Bulgaria during winter (November to March). How long to stay in Bulgaria

You will not get enough time to experience everything this country has to offer if you have less than a week to spend. Therefore, if you are planning a vacation in Bulgaria, we recommend at least ten days in the country. This is a good amount of time to enjoy some of the country’s best hiking trails and stunning landscapes while also squeezing in a beach stay. If you can extend your stay and make it two weeks, you can even add some other noteworthy Balkan destinations, such as Croatia, to your itinerary.

Must-visit destinations in Bulgaria

A trip to Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, cannot be missed. A beautiful blend of past and future, this city is known for its ornate churches, including the colossal Alexander Nevski, which has room for over 10,000 people, and the humble yet magnificent Church of Saint George, which transports you back in time to the dawn of Christianity in the region. The Rila Mountains are a must for nature and hiking enthusiasts. While there, do not miss out on a photo-op at each of the seven Rila Lakes. Then head for the Black Sea coast, where picturesque beaches border endless stretches of turquoise waters. Bolata Beach is a dream come true for birdwatchers, while Sunny Beach will excite party animals. Up north, near the border with Serbia, is the village of Belogradchik, famous for its fortress and 200-meter-high rock formations. For winter sports lovers, a trip to Bansko, in the foothills of the Pirin Mountains, and Pamporovo, located in the Rhodope Mountains is waiting.
