Marta Benigni is a writer and traveler based in Milan, Italy. Traveling, for her, is much more than simply visiting new places—it's a way to connect with new cultures that may seem worlds apart, embrace the unexpected, and discover the beauty in the unfamiliar. Doing that allows her to push past her own boundaries, step outside her comfort zone, and see herself in new ways.

Through her writing, Marta inspires others to see travel as a path to personal growth and a deeper understanding of the world. Every destination has its own story, and she feels incredibly lucky to translate those stories into words, preserving them in a way that honors the places and people who shape them.

How did you get into travel

My journey with travel writing began quite unexpectedly, as I guess is often the case for many: while traveling alone through Spain and Portugal in 2019, I found myself needing to keep a journal of my experiences.
However, this newfound passion only began to evolve into my day-to-day job with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. At the start of this incredibly unsettling and unprecedented time, I had just graduated with my Master’s degree and I found myself uncertain about the direction my life should take - with travel on hold and the world changing rapidly, I didn’t know what to do next. Stuck at home, I turned to writing as a way to keep the connection to the world alive and to continue exploring it, albeit from behind a screen. I began writing more seriously, diving into articles, blogs, and guides, and I quickly found my way into freelance writing, blending my personal experiences with a growing expertise in the travel industry.
Today, I continue to write not only to inspire others to explore, but to share the deeper, transformative power of travel—something I feel more strongly than ever! :)

Marta's unique travel experience

One of my most memorable travel experiences happened when I decided to do something completely unexpected: I organized a spontaneous trip to Lisbon. I arrived with no real plan, just a sense of adventure and curiosity. The moment I arrived there, I immediately fell in love with the city—the colorful azulejos, the breathtaking sunsets from the miradouros, the warm, welcoming locals. Lisbon felt like home, and within days, I knew I couldn’t leave. I decided to stay for several months, immersing myself in the culture, and exploring every corner of the city, as well as nearby places like Sintra and Cascais, and even the picturesque villages along the southern coast of the country. This experience transformed me in ways I never anticipated—traveling is now no longer a short escape, but a way of life. Lisbon became a "home away from home", teaching me the beauty of living in the moment and embracing the unexpected, and now, it’s become a rule of mine to return to this incredible place at least once every year!
