Iceland Budget Tours

7 reviews on bookmundi

Iceland is not a cheap destination, but a budget tour can help you experience its biggest highlights without constant surprise expenses. While the upfront price may look higher, many tours offer better overall value once you factor in hotels, transportation, breakfast, guide support, and the challenges of winter driving. Affordable Iceland trips often include the Golden Circle, with stops at Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss, and Geysir, along with South Coast highlights such as Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisfjara, Vik, and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Depending on the season, you may also be able to chase the northern lights, join a glacier walk, soak in hot springs, go whale watching, or explore places like Skaftafell, Lake Myvatn, Akureyri, and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Budget Travel Tips for Iceland

Travel in the shoulder season

The best-value times to visit Iceland are usually April to May and late September to October. May offers long daylight hours before peak summer prices fully kick in. Late September and October bring darker skies for northern lights viewing, while road conditions are often easier than in the depths of winter. That said, shoulder season is not a guaranteed bargain every year. Prices can shift with demand, so it is still worth comparing departures, accommodations, and car rental costs before booking. Even so, these months are usually a better place to start than July and August if you are trying to keep costs down.

Focus on one region for a short trip

If you only have five days, stick to Reykjavik, the Golden Circle, and the South Coast. Trying to squeeze the full Ring Road into a short trip usually leads to higher fuel costs, more one-night stays, greater weather risk, and fewer affordable food options. A focused South Coast itinerary still gives you plenty to see, including Thingvellir, Geysir and Strokkur, Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisfjara, and Vik. It is more than enough for a memorable Iceland trip without spending most of your time on the road.

Choose one premium lagoon, not several

The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions, but it is not the most budget-friendly option. Official prices start at ISK 11,990 for Comfort admission, ISK 14,990 for Premium, and ISK 18,490 for Signature. Sky Lagoon can be a better-value option for travelers staying in Reykjavik, especially if it saves transport time, but it is still a premium experience. If you are traveling on a tighter budget, Reykjavik’s public pools and local geothermal baths are a much cheaper alternative. Reykjavik City’s adult single swimming pool admission is ISK 1,500 in 2026, which is far less than the price of a premium lagoon visit.

Think carefully before renting a car solo

Renting a car often makes the most sense when two to four travelers split the cost of the rental, fuel, road fees, and parking. Solo travelers have to absorb those costs alone, along with insurance decisions and the responsibility of driving in changing conditions. In winter, budget tours can offer better value because they remove the driving risk and include transportation between major sights. You also avoid paying for a rental car that sits unused while you join glacier, ice cave, or northern lights excursions.

We saw a lot of Iceland. It was very scenic. The waterfalls were amazing and the snow covered mountains were great to look at. The best part for me was the cruise on the glacier lake, with all the different colored glaciers floating around.

First of all, the tour guide, Arna, and her cohost, Thomas, the driver, were outstanding! They became our friends quickly; I think most on the tour would attest to that. Arna was responsive, full of information about Iceland’s history, and current culture, patient, funny, kind, with tremendous energy and enthusiasm. Thomas was the same and I think went above and beyond for us with loading luggage, directing us to where wanted or needed to go, patiently waiting for stragglers (not often), pointing out sites on our way to the airport after our goodbyes to Arna. Both are very personable and willing to just talk and be friendly. Collette chose two very good hotels to accommodate us and whoever chose the restaurants and sites to see did a wonderful job. I enjoyed getting out in the fresh, crisp air. I felt very healthy up there. The trip to the lighthouse with the artwork and the resident tuxedo cat, the horse farm, goat farm, geysers and waterfall walks, the scenery, the Sky Lagoon, the churches and the overlooks, the trip to experience the baking of the rye bread underground by the thermal pools and then eating it with butter and chard was fun and delicious. All the fabulous seafood and soups. Our last night there after the thermal pools was our final dinner. Arna had a musician friend come and sing and tell us stories about the Icelandic people. I haven’t laughed that hard in ages. He was thoroughly entertaining and topped off our trip for me! And above and beyond all the experiences were my fellow travelers who I enjoyed thoroughly. It was a very congenial group! And hope to see them on future trips. I’m probably the only one on the tour who could have lived without the glacier tour. While the guides were amazing and funny, and I'm not likely to forget it, I think people should not be carving out glaciers. I may not fully understand the process and consequences. But, it did not feel like the right thing to do which I believe instead should be protecting some of Iceland’s most valuable assets, fresh water. All that said, I will very gladly go on many more Collette trips!

The tour hit all of the popular highlights of The Golden Circle and I always felt like I had enough time to enjoy each one. Our tour guide was well organized and full of information about Iceland's history and culture. Of course the highlight was the Northern Lights and they didn't disappoint. There's no guarantee we would see them and it took more than one attempt. But I love that there were multiple "hunting" opportunities built into the schedule. It was well worth the cold weather you'll encounter in late March.

Tour guide outstanding! We didn't see the northern lights but we saw so much. Middle hotels was ok. Recommend wash cloths. Bartender was incredible. Good trip, wonderful time

Iceland is gorgeous when it's wrapped in its winter coat of snow and ice. The waterfalls, glaciers and lava fields were the highlight of my tour. Its not a place fir fall colors as there are no trees. The food was good and people friendly. I'll have to return to explore the northern part of the island.

It was a wonderful experience, Iceland is absolutely beautiful. The tour guide Rosalinda was very knowledgeable and friendly and when we had snow days where we couldn't get around she made up for it by substituting other things we were able to do. The bus driver was very d friendly and an excellent driver. I highly recommend this tour it's a truly friendly and amazing place to visit.
