For those in search of a truly spiritual and challenging Himalayan journey, the "Journey to Mount Kailash" is an 18-day trekking and hiking tour that begins in Chengdu and concludes in Kathmandu. Crafted for experienced travelers, this adventure combines the Saga Dawa Festival at sacred Mount Kailash with an immersive exploration of Tibet’s ancient culture.

Travel across the vast Tibetan Plateau, passing through Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse, and marvel at centuries-old monasteries and vibrant towns. Arriving at Mount Kailash during the Saga Dawa Festival, you’ll witness a rare gathering of pilgrims, experiencing electrifying rituals and celebrations. The highlight is the three-day kora (pilgrimage circuit) around Kailash—a physically demanding trek revered in Hindu and Buddhist traditions for its spiritual significance. The tour includes a seamless return to Lhasa and concludes in Kathmandu, ensuring a comprehensive traverse of Tibet’s heartlands.

day 1 - Arrive in Chengdu, China

We arrive in Chengdu, the vibrant capital of Sichuan Province, known for its teahouses, Sichuan cuisine, and laid-back atmosphere. A World Expeditions representative meets us at the airport and transfers us to our hotel. The afternoon and evening are free to relax or explore the lively local streets at our own pace.

day 2 - Fly Chengdu to Lhasa (3,670m) – Drive

This morning, we are transferred to the airport for the flight to Lhasa. You will be advised which flight to book as the group are required to arrive into Tibet together due to the group permit. On arrival at Lhasa Airport you will be transferred to the city, a drive that takes around two hours. Due to the high altitude, you need to take it easy when you arrive in Lhasa. (Chengdu to Lhasa flights not included in trip cost.) A briefing will be given around 5pm by your guide, where arrangements will be made for the distribution of your kit bag, sleeping bag and down/fibrefill jacket.

day 3-4 - Exploring Lhasa’s Spiritual and Cultural Highlights (3,670m)

We spend two days discovering the rich history and sacred sites of Lhasa.

Highlights include a visit to the Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s most important religious site, and a walk through Barkhor Square, where pilgrims from across Tibet gather in devotion. We explore the striking Potala Palace, former home of the Dalai Lama, and stroll through the gardens of Norbulingka, his traditional summer residence.

We also visit Drepung and Sera Monasteries, both key centres of Tibetan Buddhism, where we witness daily monastic life and may see the monks engage in their famous debating practice. These days offer a perfect introduction to the heart of Tibetan culture. Overnight (both nights): Hotel in Lhasa

day 5 - Drive from Lhasa to Gyantse (3,900m) Drive

Today we begin our journey across the vast Tibetan Plateau towards Mount Kailash. From Lhasa, we travel through the Kyichu Valley and along the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River), before climbing to the Khamba La Pass (4,900m). From here, we enjoy breathtaking views of Yamdrok Tso, a shimmering turquoise lake framed by snow-capped mountains. Our route continues around the lake and over the Karo La Pass (5,200m), where dramatic glacier views await. We arrive in the historic town of Gyantse, where we visit the Kumbum Chorten – an impressive multi-level Buddhist structure built in the 15th century, filled with chapels and vibrant murals.
