Jordan in March sees warmer climes, with abundant sunshine and daylight hours. There are still some intermittent rain showers, but they are usually limited to late afternoons. Jordan awakens from its winter slumber in March. It is the beginning of the spring season and the best time to explore the country’s beautiful landscapes and many historical and cultural attractions. Here are some reasons why you should visit Jordan in March.

  • Jordan Trail: Challenge yourself by trekking the breadth of Jordan Trail. This is a 645 km long-distance trek that begins at Umm Qais in the north and spans the entire length all the way to Aqaba in the south. The trail passes through some of Jordan’s most beautiful landscapes and ancient ruins. It is one of the best ways to explore Jordan.
  • Aqaba and the Red Sea: March is a perfect month to enjoy the warm waters and beaches of the Red Sea. You can also go snorkeling and scuba diving to explore the rich marine life in one of the most productive coral reefs there is
  • Dead Sea Ultra Marathon: Keen runners can join the Dead Sea Ultra Marathon, an event that sees participants racing around the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. The race starts near the historical Baptism Site on the banks of the Jordan River and ends on the shores of the Dead Sea.
  • Shoulder season deals: The beginning of March sees fewer crowds and some great deals on tourist sites like the Dead Sea and Petra. But book early as the tourist numbers begin to rise towards the end of the month.

Where To Go and What to Do

The ancient Roman ruins of Jerash will lead you through famous sites, such as the Hippodrome, the impressive Forum, the Temple of Zeus, and the Arch of Hadrian.

The warm days and breezy nights of spring make March one of the best months to visit the ancient city of Petra. With around 14 hours of sunshine, you can spend the whole day exploring the city’s many attractions like the Siq and Treasury, the Colonnaded Street, and the High Place of Sacrifice. You can also climb the 850 rock-cut steps to Al-Deir or the Monastery, which is the largest monument of Petra and undoubtedly the most impressive one.

March is also a perfect time to see Wadi Rum. Get the taste of a nomadic lifestyle by staying in a camp, seeing the sun rise over the deep red dunes of Jebel Umm Ulaydiyya in an early morning hot-air balloon ride, and hiking to the summit of the Burdah Rock Bridge. You can also abseil the vast chasm of Kharazeh canyon and explore the hills above the Dead Sea.

While in Jordan, do not forget to visit the ancient Roman ruins at Jerash, the vast imperial city destroyed by an earthquake in 749 AD. Hire a guide who will lead you through the city’s most famous sites such as the Hippodrome, the impressive Forum, the Temple of Zeus, and Hadrian’s Arch.

For beach fun and marine life spotting, Aqaba is the place to be. While you are there, also visit Aqaba Bird Observatory, an artificial wetland reserve that draws huge flocks of migratory birds passing between Europe, Africa, and Asia during spring. To see the desert wildlife, visit the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve in the town of Azraq. Here you can see some of the Middle East’s endangered wildlife such as Arabian oryx, Dorcas’ gazelle, and Persian onagers.

March is a wonderful time to visit Jordan as spring warms up the land and brings long sunny days.
