Marvelous trip Reviewed Tour: 4-Day Northern Lights Adventure
4.5 - Excellent
  • Wim And Caroline
“In March 2019 we did this marvelous trip. For early spring the weather was nice and the landscape beautiful: surrealistic geothermal pools on Reykjanes and snowcapped mountains above the glaciers. Right in time the driver picked us (family of 2 parents and 3 young-adults from the Netherlands) up at the airport. On the way to Hvolsvllur we visited the geothermal pools of Krsuvik. A warm welcome at Base Camp Midgard. We absolutely prefer a small family-owned and local-based company instead of a big travel agency/company. Another advantage is the location: much closer to the highlights in the south than a hotel in Reykjavik. Breakfast and dinner (and the drinks at the bar) were fine. A cozy atmosphere with a lot of adventurous people (young or somewhat older). The trip to Prsmrk with the Ford SuperJeep was great. Due to the driving skills of Christian we crossed various rivers to get as far as possible into the Valley of the Thunder God Thor. We explored by foot the surroundings of the Eyjafjallajkull volcano. On the way back to Midgard BaseCamp we visited the Seljlans Falls. The third day we headed to the Slheimajkull Glacier. A long time ago I climbed various mountains in the Alps, the Andes and the Himalaya but walking on crampons on the glacier and -safely- descending in a crevasse is impressive too. Really worrying is the decline of the glacier in the last decades. A dramatic effect of the global warning. Please show the picture of the sign to D. Trump. The last day on our way to Reykjavik- we visited the impressive Gullfoss waterfall (thanks to Sigridur Tmasdttir who saved the area), Geysir and the xarfoss waterfall.Summarizing a great trip in just 4 days.”

“My guide was Karen. She was oh so nice and very knowledgeable! She educated the group on the food and country, while fielding all of the groups questions. The restaurants we visited were charming. It was great for me, wanting to sample the iconic Icelandic food yet not liking seafood, I was able to taste (and enjoy) what I not would have ordered on my own. Even met people on the tour and continued sight seeing with them after the tour!”

Iceland - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

A trip to Iceland is a rare treat. The country has only seen an influx of tourism in the last 15 years or so. As airlines create new routes to the capital city of Reykjavik, the country is building new infrastructure to keep up with the crowds of adventurers rushing to take in all the Nordic island has to offer, especially active holidays and outdoor tours, revealing mother nature at her best!

Iceland’s beauty is unrivalled, hosting every natural wonder you could possibly imagine: cascading waterfalls, gushing geysers, impressive glaciers, and volcanic lakes. The country is paradise for any nature lover.

Tour Highlights

  • Explore Iceland’s Golden Circle, taking in the stunning sights of Thingvellir National Park, the Great Geysir, and the Gullfoss waterfall
  • Spend a relaxing afternoon soaking up geothermal energy from the hot springs at the famous Blue Lagoon
  • Check out the black sand of Vik beach
  • Catch the glorious Northern Lights between September and March
  • Take in some live music (and stunning architecture) at the Harpa in Reykjavik
  • Climb the tower of the Hallgrímskirkja cathedral for some of the best views of Iceland’s capital city
  • Step behind the powerful waters of Skógafoss for a unique waterfall view

Travel Tips

  • Want to see absolutely everything Iceland’s 100,000 square kilometres have to offer? Iceland has no trains and few public buses. Renting a car allows you to make spontaneous stops at hot springs or to take selfies with roadside Icelandic horses.
  • The Blue Lagoon is most easily visited on your way to or from the airport using a bus transfer that departs every hour.
  • Pack water-resistant clothing and be prepared to dress in layers. It’s key for handling Iceland’s unpredictable weather and controlling your body’s temperature when climbing about waterfalls and glaciers.
  • Get ready to expand your taste pallet. Iceland is known for its skyr, an extremely thick high-protein yoghurt, and specialities like smoked puffin, reindeer, and whale meat.
  • Visiting in the summer months? Be prepared for constant daylight. Be sure to pack an eye mask for blocking out the light when sleeping.

Iceland has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Iceland before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Iceland, do check out our Iceland Travel Guide for more information.
