While southern Spain may get a lot of attention from visitors, northern Spain is a gem of a region that should not be sidelined. A northern Spain tour gives visitors access to Spain’s dramatic coastlines, with a collection of prime surf spots and rugged mountain ranges for hikers.

Loved everything about this trip. Tour guide Juan-Jose organised everything so well and also took the time to socialise with us during his free time which helped the bond as a group. Scenery was beautiful and the walking was about the level I expected - no walk was particularly challenging in itself but over the week as a whole, the cumulative effect probably put it on the harder end of the moderate scale. If people wanted to miss a day out, that was not a problem (which is the benefit of a centre-based trip). We were very lucky with the weather in late-October - but can't guarantee that every time!

We had a great time on our walk. Everything went as described, including detailed information pre-tour, accomodation and luggage transfers. The Camino Norte was phenomenally beautiful although was harder physically than we had expected. It was our first multi-day trek and the more training you can do pre-trip (especially hills) the better. Day 2 was particularly hard but then your body adjusts and you get into a rhythm of the day. We are already planning our next trek.

First, the Picos de Europa are stunning mountains, with beautiful beech forests on the lower slopes. But the logistics of walking are complicated because there are very few roads. The great thing about this tour is that the itinerary is designed to overcome those logistical challenges. The tour guide has been leading tours for 35 years and is passionate about the mountains and the paths. He and his family run the small hotel where the tour is based. The hotel is clean and simple, and the food is very good. The guide's detailed knowledge of the mountains meant that he was able to make rapid adjustments if the weather required it. Some of the walks are demanding, but all of them present awesome vistas. I thoroughly enjoyed the week and would definitely recommend it.

As usual (for the third time!) most wonderful scenic walks, warm welcoming guide and family, lovely Asturian food, comfortable accommodation. Will be back "home" again next year. Thank you JuanJo and family.

I must like the Picos, and Sotres in particular, as this was my third visit to Casa Cipriano and Juan Jo and his amazing family. It won't be my last stay in my happy place. Juan Jo's local knowledge informs his guiding of each day's walking allowing them to be tailored to the group's collective and individual abilities. I look forward to sharing the 'hills' and the bar with new companions in 2026. Thanks Juan Jo and Sonia for another marvellous holiday.

The week was fun. The hikes were significant in intensity. The people in my group were great. The host and his wife were wonderful. I hope anybody that goes on this trip gets to see a cloudless sky from up in the mountains like I did. You can't really capture that in a picture.

Northern Spain — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Northern Spain Tour Highlights

  • Take in breathtaking coastal views along St. James Way, or Camino de Santiago as it’s known in Spanish. The old pilgrimage route is perfect for anybody looking to explore the great outdoors of northern Spain.
  • Hit up the autonomous region of Galicia and Asturias for a tasty northern Spain tour. The region is decked out for foodies — try out gastronomic specialties among the medieval streets.
  • Head over to the Picos de Europa, Spain’s oldest national park, home to the country's third-highest mountain range. A multi-day trek here will open up stunning landscapes, nature, and wildlife.
  • Explore the city of San Sebastian in the northwestern Basque Country, known for its beaches, culture, palaces and riffs on tapas called pintxos.
  • Find snow in the Catalan Pyrenees on a northern Spain tour. You will find yourself snowshoeing your way through pristine mountainous landscapes.
  • Visit the city of Bilbao to soak up a slice of modern-day northern Spain away from all the cathedrals and cobbled streets: think craft beer, hip cafes, galleries, and a cool and creative street art scene.

Northern Spain Travel Tips

  • When you’re out hiking somewhere beautiful like the Picos de Europa, with stunning Alpine lakes, make sure you are prepared with the right gear, plenty of water, and ideally, a guide. Make sure to check the weather reports before you head out.
  • Foodies, head to San Sebastian, the ultimate culinary city in the region. This is where pintxos come from, and where you will find a lot of Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • Be aware of cultural differences in northern Spain. For example, Basque Country — or Euskadi, as it’s known in the Basque language — has its own thing going on compared to the rest of Spain. Learn the customs and manners before you go.
  • Know that cities such as Barcelona have a certain amount of petty crime aimed at tourists; make sure your belongings are safe and close to you, and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • While the region can be explored relatively easily if you do it independently, a northern Spain tour can offer so much more local insight into the hidden gems that dot this region of the country.
  • It can get hot! It’s not uncommon for temperatures to reach 40°C (100°F), so do what the Spanish do and take a siesta or afternoon nap in the hottest part of the day.
