Experience the mesmerizing blue flames of Mount Ijen on a two-day hiking trip that’s become a must for adventurous travelers to Indonesia. After a ferry ride from Bali to East Java, you’ll overnight in a hotel before embarking on a pre-dawn trek to witness the ethereal blue fire, a rare phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gases. As daylight breaks, climb to the crater rim to catch a breathtaking sunrise and panoramic views over the turquoise lake. Along the descent, encounter local sulfur miners and gain insight into their challenging work. For those preferring a gentler morning, opt for a sunrise-only hike. The USP here is the chance to witness one of Earth’s rarest natural spectacles—an experience that combines physical adventure with raw natural beauty.
day 1 - Bali - Banyuwangi (Ijen area)
Pick up at 10 am from your stay in Bali. Transfer (about 4 hours) driving to Gilimanuk port for the ferry crossing to East Java (Ketapang Port). The crossing will be around an hour. Mount Agung in Bali and Mount Raung in Java can be seen from the ferry when the weather is favorable. Arrive at Ketapang Port and directly transfers to your hotel in Banyuwangi.
day 2 - Mt. Ijen
We start early, at 1am, for the Mount Ijen excursion. From the hotel, we transfer for an hour to Paltuding area along an uphill road through the rainforest.
From Paltuding, we hike up for about 2 hours to the crater rim, and another 30-45 minutes trekking down into the crater. Once here, we'll experience the Ijen blue flame and the sunrise.
Drive back to the hotel for breakfast and freshen up. Check out from the hotel and drive back to Ketapang Harbour. Cross to Bali by ferry and go back to your accommodation or elsewhere.
