day 1Join trip Bucharest

Our trip begins today in Bucharest, Romania's vibrant capital. Once hailed the 'Paris of the East', the city lost much of its grandeur during its harsh communist regime and an earthquake in 1977. Today, it's reemerged as a European gem, thanks to its mix of Art Nouveau and Brutalist architecture, picturesque parks and thriving cultural scene. Our tour leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm and for those that wish, there is the chance to go out for dinner. Due to several flights arriving into Bucharest later in the evening, our welcome meeting will take place on the morning of day two. There are no activities planned today, so you're free to arrive in Bucharest at any time. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you will need to arrive into Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport (OTP), which is a 30-minute drive from the city centre. If you arrive earlier in the day, there's plenty to discover in the city's Old Town and many museums to choose from including the National Museum of Romanian History, the Military Museum and the Folk Art Museum.

A fabulous trip giving us the chance to experience the beauty of rural Transylvania. Our guide Raz and driver Geo made the trip extra special by sharing their experiences of the history of the country and they went above and beyond expectations in looking after us. We were a small group of 7 with 4 ebikes so the cycling was easy and we kept a consistent pace. It was good to stay in a mixture of guest houses and hotels, with 4 excellent included meals. Raz organised group meals for the other evenings. The only minor negative points were one hotel where the staff could do with a lesson in customer service! and it would have been better if the bikes had mudguards.

The trip to Romania was amazing. Highly recommend. Razvan and Geo were great. Our safety, enjoyment and comfort were their priority at all times. I was a bit worried about dogs running out at us but 90 % of them weren't interested , and with the few that were, Razvan and Geo knew just how to deal with them and they shooed away easily. We learnt a lot about Romanian social and political culture and visited some great places on the itinerary. If you have an extra day in Bucharest I recommend the outdoor museum , allow the best part of a day for this.

We thoroughly enjoyed our cycling holiday in Romania. The tour was fully in line with the sales pitch on the Explore website. We really got to discover the country: sleepy rural villages, to historic fortified town, sweeping landscapes, rugged mountains. Our guide, Raz, was full of knowledge about history, culture, religion and nature, and throughout the trip helped us to pull together a rich insight into the country of Romania. The cycling was good fun. The accomodation was comfortable (the odd dog barking at night, but given that we were in the countryside to be expected).

Very interesting and varied tour, scenery and towns visited were fabulous. Both Raz and Geo, the guides, were extremely personable, knowledgeable and helpful. Maybe an extra day or two of cycling would have been nice as you just wanted it to keep going :)

A great way to visit and experience wonderful Romania! The tour team - Elena, Lisa and Geo - were exceptional, ensuring the entire trip went smoothly, everyone had exactly what they needed to enjoy the experience and got the most out of the week. It was great to have tour leaders who were so knowledgeable about history, culture, geography, who were passionate about guiding and sharing their love of Romania and cycling, and had very good English, as well as being fun to travel with. The scenery was wonderful and the route ensured that each day we saw something special, as well as being away from traffic and able to really appreciate the countryside, and villages and towns. I would highly recommend this tour.
