Itinerary
Guided cycling along the beautiful Greenways trail connecting the Czech Republic and Austria. The Greenways cycle trails link the iconic cities of Prague and Vienna through a network of peaceful country roads and dedicated paths. This trip explores the southern stretch, starting in the wooded hills near Cesky Krumlov and tracing a scenic route along the Czech–Austrian border. Along the way, you’ll pass through medieval towns where castles tower above cobbled squares, ride through national parks and rolling vineyards, and soak up the charm of rural life. Crossing into Austria at the historic town of Mikulov, the journey continues through quiet villages and vine-covered landscapes, finishing in the elegant and culturally rich city of Vienna.
day 1 - Transfer from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, arrival briefing and arrival dinner
Transfer to Cesky Krumlov (185km/110mi) from a specified hotel in Prague at approximately 9am. We recommend that you spend the night before the tour in Prague - we can assist with hotel bookings.
There will be free time for sightseeing in Cesky Krumlov, one of Europe’s best preserved medieval towns. Welcome briefing with the group and dinner at a restaurant.
day 2 - Cycle to the Renaissance town of Trebon (53km/31mi)
The first cycling day leads you through the beautiful hilly landscape surrounding Cesky Krumlov. As you near the Trebon area, the trail gradient begins to level off. A scenic ride through a picturesque landscape ends in Renaissance town of Trebon, also well-known as a major spa resort. In Trebon you can visit the Schwarzenberg Tomb. We also recommend an evening walk around the Renaissance town.
day 3 - Follow the Greenways trail to Telc (78km/48.5mi)
Optional tour of Trebon chateau in the morning. The trail winds past many ponds and man-made lakes, typical of this region, to Perslak, the most northern point of Austria. You follow the border with Austria on the Greenways trail passing through Nova Bystrice. From Nova Bystrice the trail takes you through the forests of the National Park called Czech Canada. The day ends in Telc, a Renaissance town registered on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. Houses on the main square in Telc, with facades decorated with typically renaissance graffiti, form the best-preserved Renaissance square in the Czech Republic.
day 4 - Gentle cycle through South Moravia to Vranov (54km/33mi)
Optional tour of Telc chateau in the morning. Todays cycle takes you through several charming villages typical for this area of the country. We will cycle gently through the region of South Moravia. We will stay overnight in Vranov which is situated near a dam.
day 5 - Follow the river Dyje to Znojmo, gateway to the wine growing region (32-38km/20-23mi)
Cycling on the Greenways trail the route takes you alongside the river Dyje and next to the southern Czech border with Austria. This very beautiful trail leads through the national park of Dyje to Znojmo, the gateway to the wine producing region of South Moravia.
day 6 - Past cellar doors to Mikulov (61/72km - 37/43 miles)
This flatland region is a traditional vine-growing area and there are many wine cellars. We continue the cycle to arrive in Mikulov, a town with a rich history, a beautiful castle and an historical square. Choose a long or slightly shorter cycling option today. Check-in to your hotel in late afternoon, leisure time in the evening.
day 7 - Cycle into Austria and transfer to Vienna (45km/30mi)
You cross the border at the Mikulov border checkpoint and the rest of the day is spent in Austria. The ride in Austria is, to begin, very similar to the Czech section. There are vineyards, fields and small villages along the trail. Experienced bikers can reach the Vienna hotel by bike. We finish the cycling part of the trail in Mistelbach (48km/30mi) and travel the rest of the journey by minibus to Vienna. Overnight Vienna – dinner not included.
Note: The support vehicle with bikes and the tour leader leave Vienna on Day 7 in the early afternoon. You can return by support vehicle to Prague for free and therefore spend the last night in Prague (must be advised at time of booking) or stay on in Vienna.
