day 1Join tour Windhoek

Our tour starts today in Windhoek, Namibia's capital. This vibrant city perfectly combines its African roots with modern European architecture. There are no activities planned today, so you're free to arrive at any time. For those arriving in time, our tour leader will meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for a welcome meeting followed by dinner for those who wish to join. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH), which is around a one-hour drive from the hotel. Should you miss the welcome meeting, your tour leader will inform you of any essential information as soon as you catch up. If your flight arrives earlier in the day, you might like to get a head start on sightseeing. You could visit the National Museum or perhaps take a half-day Katatura Township tour.

We had an excellent trip. The itinerary is well thought out and covers all the classic things you want to see in Namibia, especially the dunes and game parks. .Our tour guide, Sheona, did an excellent job of telling us a lot about the country and nature and attending to everyone’s needs. We were a group that mixed well and had a lot of fun together. Our first stop was at Hammerstein Lodge, was a bit rough as we were plagued with bad weather: torrential rain, hail and snow in mid-June. This was an exception to the usual weather.. The heating in our rooms did not work. We all took it in stride as best we could. We were delighted as the accommodation only seemed to get better at each of the other stops. We did not see any lions, but we,were, lucky to be able to see rhinos and journeys of giraffes as well as some unusual things like an aardwolf and a jackal playing with its prey. I am convinced that every trip will have something unique and different on it.. The extra free day activity in Walvis Bay is highly recommended. We all signed up for it. We saw dolphins and a whale on our boat trip, but also had visits from seals and pelicans. Riding cars in the dunes by the sea was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the trip so much that I am considering doing it again.

We had a wonderful trip. I have wanted to visit Namibia for many years and it lived up to my hopes and expectations. It was made all the more special by our excellent leader, Kastro, who looked after us so well. He was knowledgeable, caring, an excellent driver, great at spotting animals, with a good sense of humour - a true ambassador for his country. The lodges and hotels were great accommodation; all very different in atmosphere but very comfortable, though we found Hammerstein very cold. We would have loved another night at Otijwa to enjoy the calm and elegant surroundings. The itinerary was full and varied and we enjoyed all the different elements - informed all the time by Kastro's commentary and explanations. Explore provided excellent trip notes which helped in the planning and anticipation of the trip. I would recommend that it would be better to suggest taking South African Rand in currency rather than USD to save having to find somewhere to change them. It might be good also to recommend a jacket as well as a fleece for the cold mornings, and I found my collapsible walking poles very useful on a couple of the longer walks.

Your leader was superb- very knowledgeable, patient and interesting with a great sense of humour. He went above and beyond at times. The trip notes were misleading about the White Lady Paintings walk. It is not a flat walk at all. The Makuti lodge was disappointing after the previous one. It was soulless. The Christmas dinner was a bone of contention as it was expensive and there were no other options
