Full Day Cape Winelands Tour

5.0(1 review)

While South Africa's fertile valleys are world famous for their crisp white and classic French-style red wines, the area is also a treasury of rustic beauty and sprawling estates shaded by giant oak trees. Our drive today will include the country's principal wine routes of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, with a stop en route for lunch (for own account). Our day starts with a visit to Paarl where you will be struck by the beauty of the Valley, the pristine blue sky, the rolling vineyards, and the Pearl of Paarl set high above the valley. Paarl made headlines when President Mandela was released from the Groot Drakenstein prison (formerly known as Victor Verster prison), on the outskirts of the town, to freedom and the start of the new South Africa. We enjoy a wine tasting at one of the local estates. From Paarl, we'll continue north-west to the beautiful village of Franschhoek, near the Drakenstein Mountains founded in 1688 by French immigrants fleeing the Huguenot religious persecution in Europe. A memorial in the town commemorates the arrival of these early settlers who helped develop the wines sought after by Napoleon, Bismarck, and royalty such as Edward VII, the Prince of Wales. Here we will stop for lunch (for own account) and another wine tasting at a local vineyard. We'll then head to Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa and the historic heart of the country's wine region. In 1679, Dutch East India Company governor Simon van der Stel, recognized the fertility of this long valley on the banks of the Eerste River, as perfect for vineyards. Enjoy a final wine tasting before returning to Cape Town.

You will be picked up from the beautiful Cape Town City Centre and enjoy a scenic drive to Franschhoek in the beautiful Cape Winelands - a place of picturesque vineyards, breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, fine wines and cuisine, and a 300-year-old history. This is where your wine tram journey begins! Experience a unique and leisurely journey through rolling vineyards in an open-side tram and open-air tram-bus stopping in at some of South Africa's oldest and most distinguished wine estates in the renowned Franschhoek region, the wine and gourmet capital of South Africa. Franschhoek is home to a variety of cellars, from small boutique wineries to large cellars. You will have the chance to explore two wine farms with charming heritage and beautiful natural scenery and also enjoy two wine tastings. You can look forward to award-winning wines, such as plump reds, elegant whites and delicious sparkling wines, with the perfect accompaniment of excellent food (lunch for own account). Your storytelling guide will also take you on a tour through Franschhoek village, sharing with you the fascinating history of the French Huguenots and the Huguenot Memorial Museum (museum visit for 2018 season only). When the Huguenots first settled in the Franschhoek Valley more than 300 years ago, they brought with them their knowledge and traditions of wine-making and viticulture from their home country of France, transforming their Franschhoek surroundings into one of the most beautiful valleys around. This proud heritage is still evident today in the village and farms. You will then visit Babylonstoren, a historic Cape Dutch farm dating back to 1692, boasting one of the best preserved farmyards in the Cape (Babylonstoren visit is for 2019 season only). After your time in Franschhoek, you will be returned to the Mother City of Cape Town.

Stellenbosch Hot Air Balloon & Champagne

Experience breathtaking views of South Africa's wine region, Stellenbosch, from a hot air balloon during this ten-hour, guided tour and taste locally produced Methode Cap Classique (MCC) wines, South Africa's equivalent of French Champagne. This tour starts with a pickup at your hotel in Cape Town form where we will drive you to the balloon launch site in Stellenbosch. See hills swathed with neat rows of vines and quaint buildings from above as you fly over the area. Toast the landing where ever that may be with a traditional glass of sparkling wine and/or orange juice. Our retrieval vehicle will take you back to the venue for breakfast/brunch. Receive a commemorative certificate which proves that you defied the laws of gravity. Time to sample some locally produced sizzling bubbles after your feet are safely back on the ground during a visit to the wine estates that you flew over. It was also the first wine estate in South Africa to undertake this endeavour. Using traditional French technique, this wine estate created South Africa's finest, vintage Methode Cap Classiques. Our next stop Lanzerac Wine Estate. This wine estate came to existence in 1962 when Isaac Schrijver was granted a piece of land by the then Governor of the Cape, Simon Van Der Stel, and it has since grown into an iconic South African wine estate it is today. Sample their Methode Cap Classique (MCC) before it is time to head home. We will drop you off at your hotel in Cape Town after the tour is over.
