Gokyo Trek

Looking for a beautiful trek in the Everest Region with fantastic views of the world’s highest mountains but want to avoid the crowd? The Gokyo Trek is the one for you.

Situated in the Sulu Khumbu region, the Gokyo trek will provide you with quieter surroundings but still jaw-dropping views of the world’s 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th highest mountains - Everest (8850 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Makalu (8463m) and Cho Oyu (8201 m) respectively. You will follow the Dudh Kosi river up the Gokyo valley to meet its source, the enormous Ngozumpa Glacier. You then open out to see the dazzling series of emerald green lakes, surrounded by rough, lofty and beautiful mountain terrain.

The Gokyo trek will take you through traditional Sherpa villages, notably the village of Gokyo, where not only will you experience local Sherpa culture, but also many herds of yaks – the native hardworking animals of the Sulu Khumbu region. The trek finishes with an early morning trek up Gokyo Ri (5367 m) from which you will be rewarded with unforgettable mountain views of the whole Sulu Khumbu region. For those who are seeking that extra challenge, this is an ideal trek. We promise, you will not be disappointed.

  • The standard Everest Base Camp trek is another trek in the Everest region and it takes 12 days to complete.

 Gokyo - Safety considerations
We take safety very seriously here at BookMundi, as do all the trekking agencies on Bookmundi.com. All our trekking agencies are assessed on their safety standards after every trek, via trekkers’ feedback. They will therefore go through safety procedures with you during your pre-trek meeting. However, please note the following particulars for the Gokyo trek:
  • This is a high altitude trek and therefore careful acclimatization is needed.
  • Ensure acclimatization days are taken during the trek to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Please make sure you are well prepared for the climate for that part of the season. In the Khumbu region, temperatures can drop to below freezing in late autumn and early spring. The temperature dip even further down during winters.

“Simply fantastic. The views were awesome, decent teahouses with really good food, made some fantastic friends & would use this same company again. The owner, Chattra was great & my guide, Ram Karki was the best guide anyone could ask for.”

“I asked for a tailored trip to Gokyo and Gokyo Ri with a crossing of the Renjo La pass back to Namche. This is a spectacular trip that requires some serious effort and a good acclimatisation. The Renjo La crossing is quite a long day (it took me 14 hours to get from Gokyo to Lungden in the snow) but it was worth the effort. The views from the pass are spectacular. Gokyo is a less travelled trek than Everest BC, and the return over Renjo La is quite solitary, so you will be away from the teeming masses of trekkers. A much more relaxing trip in my opinion.”

“Went from November 24-Dec 5, I thought it was a great time to go if you prefer less crowds. I chose Gokyo rather Than EBC for the same reason. The sky's were crisp and clear most of the time. The drawback is the Temperature is cold. Note: all tea houses have no heat other than a stove in the eating area which will only be lit for about 2 hours per day. Plan on dressing warm! The rooms were all good, My guide spoke good English, the porter was friendly, but almost no English. Trekking Planners took care of my airport pickup and should come through with the drop off when I leave after some extra days in he country. All was as promised and had a great trip! I'd recommend maybe instead of doing the direct return hike, take the alternate return. I didn't know about it, but maybe nice to have a different return walk... even if it may not be as picturesque. Of course the return on the same trail is a little different because the views are taken while looking the opposite direction.”

“I had been there to Gokyo in Oct 2016 and believe me this is a must do thing in your life..!!
The trek is about moderate to difficult grade and we did that in 10 days. Only suggestion I would leave is to add add an extra day ( last day , Namche to Phakding & to Lukla in a single strech is quite tiring ). Make sure you get to fly to and from Lukla in the mornings (the weather is quite unpredictable and flights might get cancelled )”
Great walk and Great trek! Reviewed Tour: Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri Trek

“The walk was great on all accounts, the rural Sherpa villages, the landscape, the quiet beautiful ambience of a fairly untouched land. Not seeing many tourists also gave a more special feeling of embracing the wild untamed region. After collaboration with a few friends, we altered our destination to Gokyo and the surrounding lakes etc, rather than Everest Base camp. Our decision was greeted with smiles from our guide who told us it would be far more worthwhile because Gokyo trail is more picturesque and less crowded than the classical EBC trail. After encountering masses of people on the Lukla to Phading and Namchee Bazaar trail, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that only about 10% of people followed the trail to Gokyo. The scenery and the majestic landscape, the views of several 8,000 + metre peaks was well vindicated. The climb from Gokyo (4800m) the next day to the Gokyo Ri peak (5,400m) an awesome and exhilarating experience. I would recommend this over the traditional EBC trail.”

“This is an excellent trek and a little different from ABC and EBC. Less busy but with great views changing all the time. The lakes, glacier and views of Everest are all highlights. If you make the top of Gokyo Ri the views 360 degrees are amazing. I am only an averagly fit walker and had no problems.”
