day 2 - Valletta and Mdina tour
After breakfast in hotel, we set out for a full-day excursion to explore Valletta and Mdina. We will start with the tour of the capital city, Valletta, during which we will visit the 16th century St. John's Co-Cathedral. It is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture, and houses one of the masterpieces of Caravaggio.
We will also take a tour of the Barrakka Gardens, from where we can take in the panoramic view of Valletta harbor. Next, we will head toward the Grand Master's Palace, which serves as the Maltese Parliament building today.
After the tour of the Grand Master's Palace, we will stop at a local cafe downtown and try the traditional Maltese pastries: Pastizzi and Qassata. We will have a free time in the afternoon for lunch and shopping.
After that, we will transfer to the center of the island to visit the charming walled city of Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta under the Arab occupation. The tour highlights include the stop at the St.Paul's Cathedral (entrance not included), a stroll down the narrow streets of the fortified city and the panoramic view of the island from Mdina Belvedere.
We return to our hotel in Valletta after our tour is over.
day 3 - Tree Cities, Marsaxlokk, Blue Grotto, Dingli Cliffs
Today, a private car will escort you to the beautiful Cottonera, a group of three ancient cities of Senglea, Vittoriosa and Cospicua.
We will visit the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, whose waterfront is lined with traditional fishing boats known as ‘luzzus’. These boats are brightly painted in red, blue and yellow adding vibrancy to this peaceful bay village. Here, you will have some free time to take a leisurely stroll or to browse the local market stalls. Lunch will be served at a local seafood restaurant.
Next, we will continue our tour to the western coast of Malta to visit Wied iz-Zurrieq. From here, you board a boat to visit the Blue Grotto, a deep sea cave renowned for its blue and pristine waters.
The Blue Grotto area is steep and precipitous, but in places there are gaps in the cliffs that slope down to the sea level. One of these gaps (small fjord) is Wied iz-Zurrieq, this narrow arm of the sea is an anchorage for boats in calm weather.
Many of the fishermen today also use their boats to take visitors to see the deep sea cave. The boat fee is therefore paid locally.
