Nelson Mandela Capture Site & Phezulu Tour

Nelson Mandela Capture Site & Phezulu Tour

Explore the history of KwaZulu-Natal, the distant and the recent, on this guided tour. Learn about the struggles during and the triumphs over the apartheid as well as get a glimpse of Zulu culture before the dawn of the 20th century. End the day with a thrilling visit to a reptile park. The tour departs from Durban for the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. Your guide will give you a short tour of the city, including Mahatma Gandhi’s statue by Pietermaritzburg City Hall. Next stop will be the small town of Howick to visit its waterfall. KwaNogqaza or Howick Falls is approximately 95 metres in height and lies on the Umgeni River. The local Zulu people named it the “Home of the Tall” referring to its height. Next to the fall lies a quaint old section of Howick that houses a number of historical museums and antique stores. Next, head to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site and Apartheid Museum. The Capture Site boasts a large sculpture of Nelson Mandela made up of multiple steel columns. Tourists at the Capture Site are required to stand 35 meters away the steel columns to clearly see the large bust of Nelson Mandela in focus. Facing west the impressive sculpture is a unique monument for the local Howick community. The Apartheid Museum is dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s life and his struggle against the Apartheid government. Next is the "Valley of 1,000 Hills" to experience traditional Zulu culture at PheZulu Cultural Village and visit the Reptile Park. Visitors are taken into a traditional Zulu sibaya or homestead to experience traditional Zulu life before modernization. Inside a traditional Zulu homestead there are thatched huts placed in a circular position, with the cattle placed in the centre as a form of protection. At PheZulu homesteads the thatched huts are surrounding the auditorium which faces the beautiful valley. The local PheZulu guide will take you on a guided tour of the PheZulu sibaya and explain the Zulu cultural practices to gain insight into Zulu traditions during the 1800’s. The local Zulu dancing show serves both educational and entertainment purpose as local performers sing and dance to beautiful traditional Zulu songs with complete Zulu attire. PheZulu also has the Reptile Park. The local guides are very knowledgeable and eager to take you around the park and share interesting facts about the animals in the park. PheZulu Reptile Park has diverse reptilian wildlife on site, including crocodiles, alligators, snakes, tortoises and iguanas. The guides will let you touch or hold some of the animals, including a small crocodile and the giant Burmese python, just long enough to take a photo.

This itinerary was a great way to see all the highlights Egypt has to offer. Along with a fantastic Tour Director this is the perfect trip for anyone interested in the history. Part of the itinerary was a cruise on the Nile. The ship and crew were fantastic and it was easily one of my favorite parts. With daily stops and chances to bond with other Travellers it was so much fun. This Trafalgar tour includes both ancient history and current day industry. It was very interesting to see how they make different items today in Egypt. The food provided with the itinerary was great, options for everyone. I highly recommend this itinerary.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

This unique 9-day Egypt tour starts in Egypt’s capital city of Cairo, before we head to the scenic cities of Aswan and Luxor. The tour is set to fall in line with the Sun Festival held at Abu Simbel’s Temples twice yearly. Abu Simbel was built by King Ramses II (c.1279-1213 B.C.E.). He wanted its internal chamber to light up twice a year – the first time on 22 February, on the anniversary of his ascension to the throne and the second time on his birthday on 22 October. In the early 1960’s, the entire temple complex was moved to higher ground when the Aswan Dam caused Lake Nasser to rise and inundate the area. The two temples were dismantled and raised over 60 meters up the sandstone cliff where they were reassembled, in the exact same relationship to each other and the sun, and covered with an artificial mountain. Now, every year, the temple faces east, and at the solstices – twice a year – the dawn sunlight is aligned to light the entire length of the temple entrance corridor, lighting up three of the four statues at the end of the corridor. Only the statue of Ptah, the god of darkness, remains in darkness. Once we arrive in Cairo, we’ll explore the Great Pyramids and the towering Giza Sphinx, before we make our way to Aswan to explore the island-based Philae Temple and the Aswan Dam. Our trip to Abu Simbel starts early, as we aim to be at the monument before sunrise. It will be busy, but it's very organised and everyone will have a chance to go inside to see this magnificent spectacle. After witnessing this unique experience, we’ll head back to Aswan as we set sail on a traditional felucca sailboat for a peaceful cruise on the tranquil waters of the Nile River, as we head to Luxor. A support boat will join us every now and then, which includes a welcome toilet, showers and a massage deck. An alternative upgrade to an extra night in the hotel in Aswan is available if you prefer. En-route to Luxor, we’ll stop to visit the Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples and once we arrive, we’ll visit the towering Karnak Temple, the tombs at the Valley of the Kings and Queen Hatchepsut Temple. You’ll also have some free time to explore the busy markets or relax at the hotel pool before we head back to Cairo. As an additional extra, you can add a visit to the Red Sea, please contact us for details as extensions are easily arranged from Luxor to Hurghada, and then back to Cairo from there.
