With so many amazing festivals and things to do, it might seem pretty clear why you should tour Hungary in June, but let’s dive in and find out in more detail.

  • Kolorado: Held towards the end of June, Kolorado is a popular music, arts, and culture festival that brings together acts and artists from around the world. It’s held in the forest just outside Budapest, so while it’s accessible from the city, it feels like you’re out in the wilds of Hungary, which is pretty cool!
  • Danube Folk Carnival: This particular Hungarian festival takes place, as the name suggests, around the mighty Danube River that snakes through the country and the capital, Budapest. With plenty of boats, traditional folk music, and dance performances, all out in the June sunshine, it’s a great event near the start of the month.
  • Rosalia Festival: While you might not have heard of Hungarian wine, it’s definitely coming into its own, and the Rosalia Festival in June is dedicated to rose and sparkling wines in particular. Grab a glass, meet the winemakers, and taste all the great blends that Hungary has to offer.
  • Night of the Museums: To celebrate midsummer, the museums all around Budapest throw open their doors throughout the night and operate special buses that take visitors between each museum or gallery. You buy a ticket for the whole night, and you can explore culture and history until the small hours of the morning!

Where to go and what to do

Budapest is amazing this time of year making activities like swimming and cycling a treat.

With the bright and warm weather, getting on a cruise tour of the Danube River in June is a must. Whether that’s on an open-top river cruise that takes in the sites, visiting the Danube Folk Carnival, or even paddling down the mighty river on a stand-up paddleboard, the choice is yours. There’s actually a stand-up paddleboard festival down the Danube during June, where hundreds of paddlers make their way through the heart of Budapest.

If you’d rather spend the hot Hungarian days in the water rather than on top of them, head to Palatinus Bath on Margaret Island. This unique island lies in the center of the Danube in Budapest and is perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. The Palatinus Bath is an open-water swimming pool that is super popular with locals and tourists alike. While it’s open all year round, the high temperatures in June make it the ideal place to visit in the city.

Fancy getting out of Budapest and spending time in nature? Why not explore the lavender fields in Tihany? Located on the shores of the stunning Lake Balaton, Tihany is a small village with a big reputation for sprawling fields of lavender that you can smell from miles away. With June welcoming in the bulk of the blooms, it’s the ideal time to visit before the main summer crowds hit.
