Travel Tips
- The Maldives is a 100% Muslim populated country, and there are several conservative laws that visitors must follow. When travelling off resort, do not wear your bathing suits or revealing clothing. Homosexuality, alcohol and public displays of affection are all illegal within the country, except on resort islands.
- Seaplane flights from the Male airport to your resort island, though short in duration, can be very expensive. Be sure to research ahead and take the cost into consideration when creating your budget.
- The drinking water in the Maldives is heavily treated, meaning it is stripped of its natural minerals. To keep your body properly hydrated, buy some rehydration salt packages from the pharmacy at the airport or your resort.
- While snorkelling is common in many tropical destinations, the Maldives is one of the best destinations in the world for spotting large marine life. Be on the lookout for whale sharks, dolphins, Hammerhead sharks and sea turtles.
- A holiday in the Maldives is perfect if you’re looking to disconnect from the rest of the world. But, if you simply can’t live without your Wi-Fi, be prepared to pay for it. Many resorts charge for internet access, and they can be quite expensive (up to US$150 per week!).
