Interesting tour through Bhutan
5 - Excellent

“The trip to Bhutan was interesting, strange and surprising in many ways. We needed to combine work matters with getting to know this amazing country. We had basic information from various sources like almost all tourists, but the landscape, culture and people still surprised us, of course in a positive way. We have only positive experiences, I think mainly thanks to the agency and the guide (who could have been a bit more talkative).”

“We have joined a group tour organized by this local travel specialist for Dagala Thousand Lakes trip in 2019. It was one of the most scenic treks that I have ever been to. All along the way you will be greeted by towering Himalayas like Mountain Jumolhari, Kanchenjunga, Tsheringma and on occasion you may see Mount Everest as well. I took this trek on end of May when the wild flower was in bloom. The trek also gives you a glimpse of many glacial lakes. We had a wonderful trekking experience with the agency. Thank you. Note: Please bring warm clothes as it can get chilly on such elevation even during May month.”

“My wife and I tailored our trip to extend it by one extra night, and Mr. Thinley and the team tweaked the itinerary to suit our personal interests and plans. Each item on the itinerary was designed to give us the best possible experience and to maximise our time in Bhutan. On a personal note the team at this agency moved heaven and Earth for my wife and I when, due to an unforseen circumstance, we were unable to fly on the day of our flight. It was not their fault, yet they changed our flights, visas and pushed back the dates of our visit at no extra charge to us, just to ensure we were able to make this trip, which is beyond extraordinary service. The hotels they booked us into were always really good, with great staff and delicious food that they were often happy to tailor to our own preferences (my wife is vegetarian but still wished to try as much Bhutanese food as possible). Several even came with some of the best views I've ever had from a hotel. Our tour guides, Phurba and Pema were amazing. Always flexible with times and full of information about Bhutan and life there. They were very informative and great fun, it was a pleasure to spend 6 days with them and they ensured we always enjoyed ourselves and got the absolute most from our time in Bhutan.”

Bhutan - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Bhutan is a hiker’s paradise, perhaps best known for its dramatic landscapes, steep cliffs and Himalayan peaks. Sometimes referred to as ‘the last great Himalayan kingdom’, the country maintains a mysterious, sacred history that you simply won’t find anywhere else, even in its neighbouring countries. Enriched with Buddhist culture, Bhutan is great for travellers looking to take a mindful holiday with a spiritual connection. Unique cultural experiences abound in Bhutan, from incredible monasteries to dozens of year-round festivals.

Tour Highlights

  • Trek to Taktshang Goemba (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), an impressive 7,000 feet above sea level
  • Attend Thimphu Tshechu, a three-day festival starting the 10th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar
  • Visit Punakha Dzong, the crowning place of Bhutan’s kings
  • Snap a photo of a Takin, Bhutan’s national animal
  • Cross the iron chain bridge at Tachog Lhakhang

Travel Tips

  • Don’t expect to do much swimming on your visit to Bhutan. The country of Bhutan is completely landlocked, and its lakes are considered sacred.
  • Be courteous and respectful when visiting monasteries, temples and other religious places. Be sure to remove your shoes and hat before entering. Many of these sites also forbid photography, so never take photos without first asking permission.
  • No, you’re not seeing things - those certainly are paintings of penises you see everywhere in Bhutan. These paintings are meant to dispel evil and act as a protection against malice. They’re also meant to encourage fertility and were originally encouraged by Drukpa Kunley, or the “Madman from Kyishodruk”, Bhutan’s fertility saint.
  • The Bhutanese love spicy food. Red and green chilis can be found in nearly every local dish. In fact, the national dish, ema datse, not only contains chillies, it is also served with dried chillies on top!
  • If you come across the royal family during your trip to Bhutan (which is likely to happen, given the country’s small population of about 800,000 people), do not take their photo without permission. Be sure to show respect as the Bhutanese truly love their monarchy.

Bhutan has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Bhutan before planning your tour to the country. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in the country, do check out our Bhutan Travel Guide for more information.
