Other Practical InformationSAFETY STANDARDS ON EVERY CLIMB: 1) Our guides have proven expertise on how to lead clients safely and effectively to the top of Kilimanjaro. Your safety is the highest priority for us. Our clients put their lives in our hands and trust us to keep them safe; we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our guides are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR), which means they have the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions. On the Mountain, our guides perform a Health Check on every client twice a day, in the morning and in the evening to confirm that you are in perfect condition for the climb. ❖ Every Morning before you start your trek, our guides will examine you and listen to your lungs with a stethoscope and they will use a Pulse-Ox meter, which measures your critical oxygen saturation levels in your blood and heart rate. Each client's health is monitored very closely while on the mountain. Our guides will monitor you every step of the way to make sure you are safe on high altitude. Regular health checks help keep you and Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate Guides informed about your condition. Note: To make your trek safer, please bring the following prescription medications, which your medically qualified guide is familiar with. ❖ Please show this to your doctor: DIAMOX (Acetozolamide) -2 x 125 mg per day. This drug is prescribed for altitude acclimatization and should be started 2 days before your climb, and stopped after you reach the highest elevation on the trek. We advise you to start 2 days prior to climbing in order to ascertain whether you have any adverse reaction to it. Important note: Diamox should not be taken in by those who have diabetes or are sulfur-allergic. At the same time, if you have one of these conditions, this is not a reason to abandon your dream adventure. Consider taking our 7/8-day programs to give your body more time for natural acclimatization, and make sure to inform our wildlife adventure experts, who will take care of the necessary arrangements. DECADRON (Dexamethasone) - 4mg x 8 tablets. Your guide may ask you to take this medication if you develop a severe headache due to Acute Mountain Sickness, and must be descending urgently. You do not take this drug during the ascent. This steroid reduces inflammation of the brain, which is the cause of headaches resulting from Acute Mountain Sickness. You will only be using this medication in conjunction with your descent due to a severe headache. If a climber does not acclimatize naturally and continues to suffer the effects of Acute Mountain Sickness, then it is our policy for you to descend immediately. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) May ward off altitude sickness. works by decreasing swelling and inflammation. ZOFRAN (Ondansetron) - x 12 dissolved tablets. Or bring Phenergan, In the event you develop severe nausea due to acute Mountain Sickness, this drug reduces nausea without any side effects. We may use this once on the ascent, to gain a few hours to allow you to acclimatize. If a climber does not acclimatize naturally and continues to suffer the effects of Acute Mountain Sickness, then they will always descend. CIPRO–(or Imodium) 1 complete course for traveler’s diarrhea TINDAMAX (Tinidazole) -1 complete course for protozoa diarrhea. PRIVATE TOILET TENTS: Stay healthier and happier on Kilimanjaro. Our private, hygienic toilet tents are designed to keep you healthier and happier on Kilimanjaro. Your bathroom situation on the mountain matters. And once you see the public outhouses that thousands of other trekkers use daily, you’ll realize Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate clean, private toilets are essential to your hygiene and health on Kilimanjaro.
