Magical and Mystical Bhutan Tour

  • Sooraj Nambiar
“The tour was very beautifully crafted and we explored the most beautiful parts of the kingdom of Bhutan. Me and my wife are both hikers and love to explore the wilderness. And theres nothing like exploring the far flung dragon kingdom of Bhutan. Our 2019 Bhutan tour was the most amazing so far among all our trips around the world. We started off by arriving at Paro Airport, a wonderful lush valley surrounded by high mountains. It was a world out of this world. The drive from Paro to Thimphu unfolded numerous sacred temples in exotic locations. The Tachog Lhakhang was one of our favorite with mystical energy in an ancient set up. We also added 2 nights stay in Punakha valley to the Bhutan Walking & Hiking Tour. We hiked to Lungchutse Gompa from Dochula Pass on our way from Thimphu to Punakha. From the Gompa the view was epic (on top the world); we have commanding view of the Punakha and Wangdue valley and bird eye view of some highest snow covered peaks. The hike to Zuri in Paro was leisure one but the trail offers wonderful opportunities to capture the verdant Paro valley and Paro Dzong. There were ample of other hikes that we have equally enjoyed such as:Chelela Pass to Kila Gompa hikeJungney Dra hike in HaaTango and Chari Monastery in ThimphuKhamsum Yulley Hike in Punakha The Epic Tigers Nest Monastery (must visit )We have also covered cultural sightseeing places such as:Buddha DordenmaChangangkha Lhakhang National Memorial Chorten Painting SchoolTraditional Medicinal hospital Paro Museum Punakha Dzong (must visit)Sangchen Nunnery in Punakha White and Black temple in Haa etc. The local travel specialist has been so accommodating with our ever evolving changes in the itinerary even after our arrival. The entire trip was fantastic! The Best Trip of our life. Thank you, local travel expert.”

“Bhutan is such a beautiful county and what makes it more beautiful are the people and it’s culture . Right from the moment we landed to the beautiful airport at Paro, we immediately felt like we were visiting home . Our constant companions during the 8 night tour were our guides -Namgey and Kilay who went out of their way to make sure that we were enjoying every bit of our trip . The climb is to Tigers Nest which was challenging -I don’t think I would have managed to complete it without the constant encouragement and support of both of them . They became like family by the time we ended the tour. And October 7th was my birthday and while having breakfast at hotel Mr Thinley who manages the agency and with whom I had been interacting all those months turned up at the hotel with some birthday gifts for me as well as for my wife and daughter - it was such a sweet gesture and so unexpected . We just can't wait to go back .”

“Thanks to the very swift reply of Thinley and his team an easy booking of my 13 days of stay in Bhutan was complete in 3 days including flights to Paro and e-Visa. Thinley was always responsible to my needs during my stay. This local travel specialist does have excellent connections so that my trekking was led by an experienced mountain guide and a team, which made my trekking experience very safe. They do also have a wide variety of 3* to 5* hotels, which accommodate everybody’s need. As a trekker I chose 3* hotels and was very happy.”

Bhutan - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Bhutan is a hiker’s paradise, perhaps best known for its dramatic landscapes, steep cliffs and Himalayan peaks. Sometimes referred to as ‘the last great Himalayan kingdom’, the country maintains a mysterious, sacred history that you simply won’t find anywhere else, even in its neighbouring countries. Enriched with Buddhist culture, Bhutan is great for travellers looking to take a mindful holiday with a spiritual connection. Unique cultural experiences abound in Bhutan, from incredible monasteries to dozens of year-round festivals.

Tour Highlights

  • Trek to Taktshang Goemba (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), an impressive 7,000 feet above sea level
  • Attend Thimphu Tshechu, a three-day festival starting the 10th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar
  • Visit Punakha Dzong, the crowning place of Bhutan’s kings
  • Snap a photo of a Takin, Bhutan’s national animal
  • Cross the iron chain bridge at Tachog Lhakhang

Travel Tips

  • Don’t expect to do much swimming on your visit to Bhutan. The country of Bhutan is completely landlocked, and its lakes are considered sacred.
  • Be courteous and respectful when visiting monasteries, temples and other religious places. Be sure to remove your shoes and hat before entering. Many of these sites also forbid photography, so never take photos without first asking permission.
  • No, you’re not seeing things - those certainly are paintings of penises you see everywhere in Bhutan. These paintings are meant to dispel evil and act as a protection against malice. They’re also meant to encourage fertility and were originally encouraged by Drukpa Kunley, or the “Madman from Kyishodruk”, Bhutan’s fertility saint.
  • The Bhutanese love spicy food. Red and green chilis can be found in nearly every local dish. In fact, the national dish, ema datse, not only contains chillies, it is also served with dried chillies on top!
  • If you come across the royal family during your trip to Bhutan (which is likely to happen, given the country’s small population of about 800,000 people), do not take their photo without permission. Be sure to show respect as the Bhutanese truly love their monarchy.

Bhutan has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Bhutan before planning your tour to the country. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in the country, do check out our Bhutan Travel Guide for more information.
