Welcome to the ultimate trek in Darjeeling – the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek! Just two hours from the city, the wonderful path begins. Though not a far drive from the city, the trail seems like it is in the middle of nowhere, as you traverse from ridge to ridge. The scenic Singalila Ridge connects the grand Himalaya of Nepal to India. The highlight of the trek is walking this ridge to Sandakphu (3636 meters/11,929 feet), the highest point in West Bengal, where you get jaw-dropping views of the highest peaks on the planet.

Rise from your peaceful slumber at Sandakphu and make a short climb to a viewpoint. From here, see Mount Everest (8848 meters), Kanchenjunga (8586 meters), Lhotse (8516 meters), and Makalu (8481 meters) in all their glory. It is truly one of the best, if not the best mountain view in India. Where else can you see 4 of the 5 highest peaks in the world in one sweeping view?

Singalila National Park is one of India’s best trekking destinations, without a doubt. The landscape, wildlife, people, and every other bit of the experience make Singalila unique and lovable. The trail begins from Maneybhanjyang on the outskirts of Singalila National Park. Hike over and around the verdant, forested hills before arriving at the barren meadows of Tumling and Kalapokhri. Then, we make a final ascent to Sandakphu. The mountains give a true sense of perspective and we feel humbled just to be in their presence. Take some moments to just admire them and take some photos, though photos cannot do this view justice.

The splendor does not stop. From Sandakphu to Phalut, the mountains remain with us. In fact, the view from Phalut is nearly as mesmerizing as the day before. The barren open area gives way to an exposed viewpoint of the majestic snow-capped peaks. In Phalut, we stay in a trekker’s hut, face-to-face with the grand Himalayas. From Phalut, we trek through the picturesque scenery of Gorkhey and Timburey before getting a ride back to Darjeeling. In Darjeeling, we take you on an awesome day tour of the city’s cultural attractions and top it off with a delicious dinner.

Every night on the trek (except at Phalut), we stay in teahouses owned by local families. This is one of the most memorable parts of the trek. Learn about the culture and individual families that run the lodges. At the homestay in Timburey, learn how to make momos and other traditional local favorites!

It is possible to do the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek Trek throughout the year. The best times, though, are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). In the springtime, the colorful flowers are blooming. During the fall, the skies are usually clearer. Ashmita Trek and Tours arranges the trek with full management, including transportation, meals, etc. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions!

“What a trip! We dropped in to see Subash (business owner) who put our tour together the afternoon before. Dawa Lama was our guide and he was nothing short of excellent! We ask a LOT of questions and he was patient, knowledgable and nothing went unanswered. One of us has serious intolerance to lots of food - Dawa made sure everything was cooked separately for us to cater for this everywhere we went which meant we stayed well throughout. He picked us up when we fell over and even rescued our bag when it shot off the trail down the mountain! Dawa picked the best bits of the normal 5 day hike and made sure we did the highlights ... a lot of the early part of the trail is on 4x4 tracks so Day One we hired one of the land rovers who drove us up to Tumling ... we hiked from Tumling to Garibas then drove up to around 3km short of Sandakphu to hike up. We had the clearest view the next day of the mountains. Dawa organised a birthday cake and candles and then we set off for two days hiking the ‘black’ forest all the way down to Rimbick which is just beautiful! The accommodation organised through Subash was excellent considering the limited resources on the ridge. The two home stays were really really welcoming and there is loads of opportunity to chat to other hikers in the evening. Dawa always introduced us to the owners and is so friendly to everyone we came across on the trails meaning we chatted to farmers and porters learning even more about local life. We are not about big ticket travelling or head down hiking - we go to places to walk, look up, enjoy and learn - Dawa and Subash understood what we wanted and delivered 110%!!! Few tips ... you have to carry your own gear, pack light and pack warm ... it is very cold at night and at sunrise. Take one set of walking clothes and a long sleeve t-shirt to sleep in. Ashmita provide sleeping bags but we took our own inners. We took our own walking poles and these were a god send but it depends on how strong your knees are! Book with Ashmita and ask for Dawa as your guide ... you won’t be let down!!! Thanks guys for such a memorable trip ... we will be back.”

“If you are into trekking and climbing, you will definitely enjoy the 6 days tour (if you are lucky, you will have Sangay as a guide). The amazing views of Everest and Kanchenjunga, cows and goats in the mist, rhododendron in blossom, various plants from forest trees to banana palms! Apart from that you would appreciate the hospitality of local villagers and their great Tibetan and Nepali cuisine! Just keep in mind that it might be a bit cold when you reach 3600 ms.”

“We did the Singhalila trekking for 5,5 days. The Trekking brought us along different kinds of landscapes, which were all quite beautiful. Along the way we stayed at guesthouses in pretty villages, met a lot of lovely people and always enjoyed good food. We can really recommend Ashmita and especially our guide Pembé, who always took good care of us.”

“We did the 9 day trek with Dawa Lama as guide and Phu-Tshering Bhutai as our High Altitude Friend. We had amazing views and real luck with the weather. But this would have been a lesser experience without our fantastic guide and HAF. They both were so helpful without being over attentive. We found out so much about the people and language which made for a much richer experience. Can't wait to come back. We started planning a return visit later in the year even before we left Darjeeling! I have lived in Asia for almost 20 years and have had the fortune to do quite a bit or trekking in the UK, Europe in general, China etc. But this was one of the very best. Spectacular mountain views and lush, colourful forest.
Note: when not walking in the morning and evening it can get pretty chilly so bring a decent jacket and inner wear!”
