“If you after a trip that has a lot of diversity, then this is the trip for you. In the Simien Mountains we watched the Geladas playing, eating grass and jumping into the Giant Lobelias in anger to protect their harem from other males trying to challenge them. They are very vocal and fun to observe. We were also fortunate to see Ibex, Bearded Vultures and two lucky people saw the Simien Fox. We climbed Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest mountain. There were some long hard days of trekking, but worth it, because you get to see the locals going about their daily lives along the way and amazing views. One particular night our guides were singing and dancing for us by the camp fire and the local children joined in, they held our hands and we danced with them. It was a special night. When you look through the itinerary you will see we went on Lake Tana to visit a 14th century monastery and on the way back saw hippos. We also visited ancient rock-hewn churches that will make you wonder how it was possible for them to be built from one huge rock - Lalibela was a highlight! Our local guide looked after us so well and was very knowledgeable about the history, religion and culture of his country. We also had a leader from our tour company join us, mainly to look after us if we needed medical help with altitude sickness. None of the group required this, but it was great to have him trek with us. The food was very good, there was always plenty of coffee available and the accommodation improved along the way from tents to a brand new resort. This is only a small part of what we experienced in Ethiopia. We really enjoyed our adventure, it was wonderful.”

“A very enjoyable trip in a very interesting country. Ethiopia is a fast growing and exciting country, and within Africa, a population second only to Nigeria. The infrastructure is improving fast and its mainly young population are starting to enjoy the freedoms of an education and an emerging confident country. The rural areas remain very poor, but infrastructure, including electricity and improved irrigation and transport links, mean that Ethiopia is no longer the barren, drought prone region imagined by most westerners. In fact, during the rainy season, it must be one of the greenest countries in Africa, and the people are generally very friendly and welcoming. Addis in particular is something of a building site, but most of the other towns have concrete shells intended as future apartment blocks and hotels, and there are apparently more university graduates than jobs in many areas - so the future of the country appears bright - although there are still challenges with over-population and the amount of available land for farming. Most people are still subsistence farmers, and the economy is yet to open fully (you can't own land for example), and if the population is to continue growing, more efficient methods of farming will need to be adopted. However, Ethiopia is already a generally good place to travel. The hotels are good and clean, and despite the worries of others, hot water is generally available, and most places have Wi-Fi of varying quality. The country also yet, hasn't become a tourist mecca, meaning you will not have the place to yourself, but you certainly won't be experiencing the crowds of other more well known destinations. The scenery is wonderful - I hadn't realized quite how mountainous most of the country is. We were there in the dry season, but it was clear that following the rains, when everything greens up, it must be spectacular. Ethiopia is also very culturally distinct from anywhere else I've been in Africa - things start to look very "Ethiopian" quite quickly, being a blend of Jewish, Arabic and both north and southern African, as well being close to Sudan, so it comes across as a real melting pot of cultures and ideas.”

“We spent 2 weeks (April 2023) of dreams with the route offered by this travel specialist in southern Ethiopia. Accompanied by an excellent driver with a very comfortable 4x4 car and a guide fluent in English and French and rich in very broad knowledge of his country, its history, the many different tribes, the fauna, religions, different climates, climate, a real walking bible! We shared 10 days with these two very nice people and the many exchanges were friendly. A delight. We particularly liked the visits to the different tribes (Dorze, Mursi, Karo, Arbore, Hamer, Sidama and others) where we could share the preparation and their meal, the coffee ceremonies and even their dances. The different lodges for the night were all of very good quality and we really regret that actually only few tourists choose to travel through this beautiful country and its many ethnic groups so different and happy to share their daily life. Betty and Yaye prepared our journeys over 10 days and we had only very good surprises, everything far exceeded our initial expectations. Thanks again to Hailu and Fisch for allowing us to find ourselves in a different world, poor but very humble and welcoming. Michèle et Gérald / Switzerland”

Ethiopia - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Ethiopia is an African nation located on the continent’s Eastern Horn (Horn of Africa). It is home to over 74 million people, and aside from Nigeria, contains the highest population in Africa. Many historians regard Ethiopia as the place of human origin as the country holds the distinction of being one of the oldest nations in the world.

Travel Highlights

  • Take a hike along the Simen mountains in one of many unique variety of national parks.
  • Go to southern Ethiopia to get a glimpse of Lake Chamo, and also to learn a little about how ancient tribes got on.
  • Check out Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa for some shopping. While you're there, visit the Addis Ababa University, which is Africa's largest University.
  • Your trip to Ethiopia is incomplete without trying ‘Injera’, sponge-like sourdough often served with soup.

Travel Tips

  • Learn a little Amharic, Ethiopia’s national language, for your dealings with the locals.
  • Ethiopia is also for the most part low-crime. Usually, western Ethiopia is the best place for travelers due to lesser known conflicts.
  • Be vigilant and careful in the areas that lay in the borders with Sudan and Kenya. These have been periodical hotbeds of crime.
  • Be careful of people who may drum up a pity story to dupe you out of some cash.
  • Don't be afraid to explore places that are deemed safe for tourists.
