Machu Picchu Tour Reviews

5 - Excellent
Based on 139 customer reviews
Absolutely incredible
5 - Excellent
  • Douglas Lewns
“I went on Salkantay Trek and the experience was absolutely incredible. Our guide, Edward was phenomenal throughout, answering all our questions and teaching us about the history, geography, nature and culture of that incredible place. I've never had a better tour guide anywhere I've been. The whole experience of Salkantay wouldn't have been possible without the amazing Chef Sebastian and our porters, Cesar, Jairo, David as well as our horseman Gabriel. Sebastian cooked the most incredible meals, we basically had a banquet for breakfast, lunch and dinner! The porters not only helped with all the cooking but also set up our campsite each night, making sure we were comfortable, safe and able to continue the trek each day. I will be recommending this tour company to everyone I know, and if you're traveling to the Cusco region I don't think there's a better company you could go with.”
Well prepared

“Well prepared Salkantay trek 5d/5n zone with Saul G as a guide and Gregorio as a chef and Cesar and Walter as porters. Good food all the way and amazing places to sleep such as the hobbit houses and the star gazing houses the very first night. Bonus was the lomo saltado cooking class and the visit of a coffee farm.”
Amazing trip

  • Maurice Rombout
“Amazing trip, 2 Days and 1 Night with the two of us. Unfortunately I got a knee injury a couple days earlier and could walk very little, especially walking down was painful. After explaining this to the tour operator, I could still do the expedition and join at 17:00 pm on day1 and thus still visit Machu Picchu together on Day 2. My girlfriend did the hike on Day 1 without me which made me a bit scared. The hike is still a challenge. Our guide Renaldo suggested to call her during lunch to see how she was doing. Before lunch, he also sent a video of how she was doing. I really appreciate his effort of contacting me the first day although I was not hiking on Day 1. Day 2 we did together and it was amazing, the view, the civilization, the rituals, the stories, the company. On Day2, Renaldo put extra effort and asked if I could see Machu Picchu from above, which you only could see if you hiked on Day1. Via a shortcut I could walk up and still see Picchu from above. Really really appreciate this. Thank you.”

Machu Picchu - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Tour Highlights

  • Arrive at Machu Picchu on foot after hiking the four-day Inca Trail.
  • Alternatively, base yourself at Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), arriving after a spectacular train journey through the mountains.
  • Travel up to the ruins in time to catch the sunrise at Machu Picchu.
  • Look out for highlights among the ruins themselves including the Temple of the Sun, the Room of the Three Windows, Intihuatana and the Sun Gate.
  • Climb Huayna Picchu, the peak at the northern end of the ruins, for views of Machu Picchu.

Travel Tips

  • Visitors to Machu Picchu are limited to 2,500 per day so book ahead to avoid disappointment, especially at the busiest times.
  • Only 400 people are permitted to climb Huayna Picchu per day so you will need to arrive early. This means queuing for the first bus from Aguas Calientes before 4.30am.
  • Follow the vertiginous trail down from Huayna Picchu to see the less-visited Temple of the Moon.
  • If you are unable to obtain a ticket for Huayna Picchu, climb Cerro Picchu to the south instead. You will be rewarded by great views and fewer crowds.
  • If you want to avoid the overcrowded Inca Trail, you can take on the alternative Salkantay Trek which offers views of Machu Picchu from above before arriving at Aguas Calientes for a visit of the ruins the next day.
  • Take insect repellent and be prepared for both sun and rain even in dry season.

Machu Picchu has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Machu Picchu before planning your tour. If you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.
