Three Wonderful Contrasting Countries - A Must Visit
5 - Excellent
  • Anonymous
“A trip of wonderful contrasts visiting three countries which having only recently gained independence from Russia should on paper be similar. Uzbekistan with its history, culture, beautiful madrassahs and mozques, and security; Kazakhstan with the flat steppe that disappears into the horizon covering 25% of the country (this is probably the size of Germany!) (admittedly we only saw the steppe and of that only a minute part); Kyrgyzstan with its mountains and lakes (75% is mountains). The two overnight and one daytime train journeys really added to the overall interest of the tour. Felt very safe everywhere and had excellent food and guides.”

“There's never a dull moment in this full-on, activity packed, classic road and rail journey. Squeezing three contrasting countries into just 15 days is something of a challenge and it requires stamina, energy, good humour and an open mind to get the most out of it. With just five in the group, this felt like a private trip and the intensity and space certainly benefitted an excellent itinerary. Uzbekistan has the monuments, China provides the counterpoint and nomadic Kyrgyzstan oozes impossibly beautiful mountain and lakeland vistas. Throw-in the Russian influences and the echoes of Ginghis Khan, Tamerlane, Alexander the Great and Marco Polo and you have an intriguing concoction.”

“overall rating on the ground brilliant, transport to London and back DIRE; only a few hours of the 12 glorious days but if Uzbekhistan wants to encourage tourism, the age of their (only) Boeing 757 and the Soviet charm of their staff needs to be seriously improved; this (an overnight flight out of 6 hours so arriving shattered and a miserable 7+ hours back, seats broken, minimal leg room, the most appalling inflight service etc etc) left an appalling impression. Having got that off my chest, the trip was exhilarating and a much better itinerary than many of the other groups met at the airport (only 2 London flights a week so all, whatever their cost, suffered the same indignities) (C&K, VJV, etc who were submitted to a an unvarying diet (saturation) of the 3 Ms (mosques, madrassahs and markets); this one had intervening days out in the desert including an arguable highlight, a night in a yurt followed by a Bactrian camel ride to a swim in an inland sea”
