Guatemala Tour Reviews

From Palenque to Flores, via Yaxchilan and Bonampak

“This tour provides a good way to travel from Palenque onward to Tikal, visiting two fabulous Maya sites along the way. The travel in Mexico was first-rate, although the cabin in the Lancandon jungle was quite basic. Private bath, but no hot water. And the stay there was not a culturally interesting one. It was just a room for the night. Once across the border, transportation is by colectivo, and it's a bumpy and slow 5 hours to Flores. But still, if I had to choose again, I would definitely take this tour.”

“This trip covers two of the three main touring areas of Guatemala, the highlands in the south and the Peten area (Mayan sites) in the north. It is run by the tour operator's local partners, with a high standard in vehicles, drivers and guides. The highlands segment (6 days) was excellent - the itinerary is varied and includes some very interesting places not commonly covered on other tours in this area. There is also a good amount of free time in lovely Antigua, so that you can fit in the Pacaya volcano trip (half day, either morning or afternoon) as an option. The Peten section was executed by another one of WE's local partners and it visits the fabulous Mayan sites of Tikal and Yaxha. We were not so impressed with the third site, Ceibal. Accommodation standard is generally very good, and the Barcelo in Guatemala is a lovely base, the Hotel Camino Real Tikal in Peten, is a lovely resort hotel and convenient to Tikal and Yaxha, but 40 minutes from Flores.”

“I think the tour operator should provide transport to the airport at the end of the trip on the same basis as transfers are provided on arrival. Our group had a number of different flight times through the day and some of us had a choice of spending most of the day at Cancun airport or incurring additional expense - the more so because of the distance we were staying from the airport”
