Busy Bali Beautiful Java

“Bali was busy but great. Java was different and great! Had such a good time, with such a good group of people. Everything was organised to perfection by our guide. Accommodation was good. Well done.”
Welcome to Yogyakarta, Java's cultural capital and the antithesis of business-oriented Jakarta. Known for its arts, Yogyakarta is a bustling city with a great vibe and plenty of galleries, concerts and more. One of our transfer representatives will collect you from the airport and take you to your hotel. Meet your group at 6pm then join them for an included group dinner.
Accommodation
  • Phoenix Hotel or similar
From two feet to two wheels, saddle up for a bike ride in the surrounding countryside this morning. The thing with Yogyakarta is, one minute you'll be enveloped in the city, the next you'll be cruising around flat rural roads with picture-perfect rice paddies and lush tropical scenery. Learn about the biggest local industry, rice production, and interact with the rural communities as they go about their version of the 9-5. Later this afternoon, head to Prambanan, the largest temple complex in Indonesia dedicated to Shiva. Watch the sun set over the pointed towers of this UNESCO-listed site built in the 10th century. With over 500 temples, the temple compound represents, according to UNESCO, not only an architectural and cultural treasure, but also a standing proof of past religious peaceful cohabitation. In the evening, enjoy an included dinner at an open-air restaurant facing Prambanan Temple followed by a performance of Ramayana ballet at an open-air theatre.
Accommodation
  • Phoenix Hotel or similar
Visit Borobudur, the largest Buddhist structure on earth. This magnificent World Heritage site is set in a tranquil park and as you approach, you'll see the enigmatic temple rise before you, looming above the tropical foliage. Follow the route of ancient pilgrims, circling the mandala-shaped structure from the early realms towards Nirvana. It's truly one of South East Asia's treasures. Afterwards, enjoy a free afternoon and evening in Yogyakarta.

Today the group will transfer to Malang, the second-largest city in East Java. Take the train from Yogyakarta to Jombang, then drive on to Malang. Once known as the 'Paris of Southeast Asia', Malang is a popular tourist destination and was previously under Dutch control, who were fond of it because of its cool highland climate. Visit the famous art museum at the Tugu Hotel where we will stay tonight, featuring a large collection of Indonesian pieces collected over the years from across the region.
Accommodation
  • Hotel Tugu Malang (feature stay)
Take a day trip to explore the countryside surrounding Malang. Stop off and learn about some local cottage industries, visiting an apple and guava orchard and see how rice crackers are made. Then, visit the Singosari Temple, a 13th-century Buddhist-Hindu temple built for the last Singosari king, and the stunning Coban Rondo Waterfall before heading to Kampung Warna Warni Jodipan, known as the colourful village. Though it may not necessarily look like a slum, this village was once one of the most run down in Indonesia. A group of university students combined with a paint company to paint the town a variety of bright colours and educate the community about sanitation and waste, and the result is this popular, quirky tourist destination filled with colour and street art that brings tourists and, more importantly, extra income to the local community.
Accommodation
  • Hotel Tugu Malang (feature stay)
Depart Malang and transfer to the Bromo area, a journey of approximately four hours by private vehicle. Enjoy some free time on arrival at the Jiwa Jawa Hotel, visiting the resort's art gallery, relaxing in the gardens or simply taking in the lush surroundings. Be sure to bring some warm clothes too as it does get cold in this region, especially during tomorrow's early start.
Accommodation
  • Jiwa Jawa Bromo Hotel
Depart early (3 am) for a morning that won't be forgotten anytime soon. The early start is well worth it to visit Mt Bromo for sunrise. If the weather is clear, the sunrise over this eerie sea of volcanoes in the morning mist is a truly remarkable experience. The ascent is not too difficult, but it can be very cold, so don't forget to bring extra layers of clothing. It's also worth bringing a scarf to cover your nose and mouth as it can get dusty. Look over the giant crater's edge then return to the hotel for breakfast afterwards then drive to Surabaya, a port town north of Bromo. The evening is free to catch up on some sleep or explore Surabaya in search of a fresh seafood feast.
Accommodation
  • Alana Hotel or similar
Transfer to the airport for a flight to Bali, Indonesia's most famous island. Transfer 1.5 hours to Ubud, arriving late in the afternoon and make the most of a free evening. Ubud is Bali's main arts and cultural centre, recently made famous by the Hollywood movie 'Eat Pray Love'. It's a wonderful place to experience the magic that has made Bali such a popular travel destination.
Accommodation
  • Anumana Hotel or similar
Prepare for a full day sightseeing around Ubud. Visit Tirta Empul, a temple famous for its holy spring water where Balinese Hindus go for ritual purification, and Gunang Kawi, an 11th-century temple complex centred around royal tombs carved into the cliffs. Continue to the Blanco Museum and the rice fields just outside of Ubud, where you will stop at an organic restaurant with food and views to die for, then on to Pura Taman Saraswati (the Lotus Temple) before finishing the day with an evening kecak dance performance.
Accommodation
  • Anumana Hotel or similar
Depart Ubud for Seminyak, visiting the Taman Ayun Temple on the way. The journey takes approximately two hours and the rest of the afternoon is free for you to enjoy this popular beach destination. Explore the restaurants and cafes at your own pace, hunt down some of the designer shops and galleries or just mellow out on the beach before your trip comes to an end tomorrow. A final dinner is included tonight to say farewell to your group and leader.

  • Group leader

All Peregrine Adventures group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Peregrine Adventures endeavours to provide the services of an experienced leader however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders.

Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. At Peregrine Adventures we aim to support local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. If you were interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location then your leader can recommend a local guide service in most of the main destinations of your trip.

  • Visas

As a general rule most countries expect that your passport has a minimum of 6 months validity remaining. Please ensure the name on your passport matches the name on your booking and airline tickets. Your passport details are required to complete your booking. Your consultant will contact you when this is required.
Take a copy of the main passport pages and other important documents with you, and leave another copy at home with family or friends.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas. Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarise yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

    INDONESIA:
Passport holders for most nationalities are permitted to enter visa free for up to 30 days for tourism purposes. Please check with your relevant consulate or embassy.

Entry requirements: presentation of onward or return tickets, passport which is valid for at least 6 months. Visitors on visa-free short visits must enter AND exit from certain airports or seaports in Indonesia including: Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta Airport), Bali (Ngurah Rai Airport), Yogyakarta (Adisucipto Airport) and Surabaya (Juanda Airport). This currently excludes entry and exist from Lombok (Bandar Udara International Airport). Visa-free short visits cannot be extended and cannot be transferred to another type of visa.

Some nationalities are required to obtain a visa on arrival, or in advance. Citizens of countries who aren't on the visa on arrival or visa-free lists are required to apply for a visa in their home country before travelling to Indonesia.

Nationals of all countries planning to stay for more than 30 days in Indonesia have to obtain an appropriate visa at an Indonesian consulate or embassy before their arrival in the country.

    PASSPORTS
Local laws require that you must always carry identification. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page and photo of your visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

  • Is this trip right for you

Dress standards in Java are more conservative than in other areas of Indonesia. Show your respect by covering your knees and shoulders when visiting temples. It's a great idea to bring your own sarong.

There is one very early start – your sunrise climb of Mt Batur kicks off at 3 am. This means you'll be walking over some gravel and volcanic rock in the dark. Head torches, warm clothing and good walking shoes are a must. The view at sunrise is well worth the effort, especially if the weather's fine!

  • Health

    GENERAL HEALTH
All Peregrine travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to cope with our style of travel. Please note that if, in the opinion of our group leader or local guide, any traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, Peregrine Adventures reserves the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations and anti-malarial requirements before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements (including a spare pair of glasses) as they may not easily be obtained at the locations on this trip. For legal reasons our leaders and guides are prohibited from administering any type of drugs including headache tablets and antibiotics. Please ensure that you are adequately prepared.

    PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION:
Not all medications available over the counter or by prescription in your home country are available in other countries. Some may be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by a doctor. Always carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating what the medicine is, how much you take and that it's for personal use only.

    MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES:
Several mosquito-borne illnesses occur in Indonesia, including malaria, dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis. The risk of infection remains low. Protect yourself against mosquito-borne illnesses by taking measures to avoid insect bites, including using insect repellent and wearing long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing. Speak to your doctor about prevention and vaccinations before you travel.

    RABIES:
Rabies is a risk throughout Indonesia, especially in Bali. Avoid direct contact with dogs and other animals, including monkeys. Don't feed or pat them. This includes monkeys in popular markets, tourist destinations and sanctuaries where you may be encouraged to interact with them. If bitten or scratched, immediately use soap and water to wash the wound thoroughly. Seek urgent medical attention.

Pre-exposure vaccine is available but receiving rabies vaccine prior to travel does not preclude the need for post-exposure medical evaluation and additional doses of rabies vaccine. There is a shortage of rabies vaccine in Indonesia and if you are bitten by an animal you should consider travelling to a 3rd country or your country of origin for treatment.

    POISONING FROM ALCOHOLIC DRINKS:
There are known cases of poisoning from alcoholic drinks contaminated by harmful substances, most recently in Bali and Lombok. Drink only at reputable venues, avoid home-made alcohol and seek urgent medical attention if you suspect poisoning.

    PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES:
Do not consume any non-prescription drugs in Indonesia, including magic mushrooms. They are highly dangerous and illegal. Indonesia carries high penalties, including the death penalty.

  • Money matters

    SPENDING MONEY:
When it comes to spending money on the trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget a sensible amount for things like meals not included, drinks, shopping, optional activities and laundry. It's always better to bring a little more than you think you'll need. Also make sure you've read your trip details thoroughly so you know what's included in the trip price and what isn't. This should make budgeting a little easier. You'll find this info in the Inclusions section of your Essential Trip Information (that's this document).

    EMERGENCY FUNDS:
We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. Please make sure you bring an extra USD500 for emergencies (e.g. natural disasters or civil unrest). Sometimes these things necessitate last minute changes to our itineraries, and we can’t guarantee there won’t be some extra costs involved.

The official currency of Indonesia is the rupiah (IDR). There are money exchanges and ATMs available at the airport and all major towns. ATMs are the easiest and safest way to access cash, although we also recommend that you bring and carry some cash in a major currency for when ATMs can not be accessed. USD notes older than 2000 series, as well as foreign currency notes that are old, torn, worn or damaged notes can't be changed in Indonesia.

Departure tax from all Indonesian airports, both domestic and international, is included in the price of your flight ticket.

    TIPPING
On this trip, we have included gratuities for the essential services that you will receive as part of your tour package. Where applicable, this will cover tips to drivers, specialist local guides, restaurant staff for included meals, porters, bellboys and other hotel staff, including room-cleaning staff.

This amount DOES NOT include a tip for your tour leader, so you may wish to set aside some funds for this. It is customary to tip your tour leader for outstanding service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline US$2-US$4 per person, per day can be used. Of course you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

You may also wish to put aside some money for your own tipping, such as when you are doing your own optional sightseeing or activity that involves local guides and/or drivers or when joining in optional groups meals or dining out on your own. In these instances, we advise you to carry small notes of local currency each day to make tipping easier. The amounts can vary greatly according to destination. Please ask your tour leader for guidance on what are appropriate amounts to tip.

  • A couple of rules

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Peregrine travellers. Peregrine’s philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter and in particular, the local people who make our destinations such special places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don’t tolerate any form of violence (verbal or physical) or sexual harassment at Peregrine, either between passengers or involving our leaders, local operators or locals. Sexual relationships (consensual or otherwise) between a leader and a passenger are unacceptable. If you ever feel another person is behaving inappropriately please inform us immediately by contacting the emergency contact number detailed in these trip notes.

  • Transport notes

    TRAVEL IN JAVA
Java is one of the most one of the largest islands in Indonesia, and we cover a large distance on this trip. Where suitable we travel by train to make the journey more comfortable but on some days we will be taking road transport. Travel times can be long, and traffic can be heavy and slow, especially over holiday periods. You will be expected to carry your own bags onto and off trains, and for short distances (porters are available in most stations at an extra charge).

  • Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.

When travelling on a trip, you won't be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24 hour emergency contact number has been seen by your leader.

If you have credit card insurance your group leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country.

  • Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

    SINGLE TRAVELLERS:
Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and don't involve a compulsory single supplement. Single travellers share with people of the same gender in accommodation ranging from twin to multishare. Some of our itineraries have accommodation booked on a mixed gender share basis and where applicable this will be specified in our Essential Trip Information. On a selection of our trips, you have the option to pay a single supplement to ensure that you have your own accommodation (where available). Please note that this only applies to accommodation during the tour - pre-trip and post-trip accommodation will be booked on a single room basis.

  • Itinerary disclaimer

    ITINERARY CHANGES:
Our itineraries are updated regularly throughout the year based on customer feedback and to reflect the current situation in each destination. The information included in this Essential Trip Information may therefore differ from when you first booked your trip. It is important that you print and review a final copy prior to travel so that you have the latest updates. Due to weather, local conditions, transport schedules, public holidays or other factors, further changes may be necessary to your itinerary once in country. The order and timing of included activities in each location may also vary seasonally to ensure our travellers have the best experience. Your tour leader will keep you up to date with any changes once on tour.

    OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
A selection of optional activities that have been popular with past travellers are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isn't an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only for some of what might be available. Prices are approximate, are for entrance only, and don’t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability. It may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, so some pre-planning for what you are most interested in is advised. When it's recommended that travellers pre-book these activities, look for a note in the Special Information section of the day-to-day itinerary. For most, they can either be organised independently on the day, or let your leader know you are interested and they can assist.

Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. Although it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. Medium and high risk activities not listed above have not been assessed by us and as such our staff and leaders are unable to assist you with organising these activities. Activities that contravene our Responsible Travel policies are also not listed. Please remember that the decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion and risk.

How our Travel Expert Service Works
  • 1 We connect you with a hand-picked and qualified travel expert who can match your trip requirements. The advantage of working directly through a travel expert is that you get the best and unfiltered advice from the very beginning.
  • 2 The travel expert will help you with creating and customising a trip for you. If you have any questions or concerns relating to the trip, the travel expert will also be able to help you with those.
  • 3 When you feel that your trip is exactly per your wish, you'll be able to book the entire trip here on Bookmundi.
The Advantages of Bookmundi
  • Selected Local Travel Experts All our local travel experts have been chosen based on rigorous selection criteria. In fact, we reject 98 out of 100 local travel agencies, and thereby giving you access to the top 1-2% local travel experts.
  • Secure Online Payment and Financial Guarantee Each and every trip is required to go through Bookmundi's secure payment platform, powered by Stripe and supported by SSL. All payments are therefore carried out in secure manners. We are furthermore member of the Danish Travel Fund which gives you a 100% financial guarantee for any money you pay on Bookmundi, even if we went bankrupt (which we we will not!).
  • Trip Replacement or 100% Reimbursement Bookmundi has hand-picked your local travel expert. Our role, as your trusted third party, is therefore to make sure that your entire experience runs as seamless and secure as possible. We guarantee to you that in the unlikely event where a local travel expert cancels your trip after your deposit or full payment has been made, we commit to replacing these services with another equally qualified agency so that your trip can go ahead as planned, or failing to replace it, we will give you a 100% reimbursement.
