For a walking tour that features adventure and history, head to Ephesus. From cultural walking tours around Ephesus to more mountainous hikes in Mount Ararat, there are plenty of routes to suit every fitness level and duration.
“Our trip with this tour operator through the back streets and alleyways of Istanbul showed us more of what this magical city had to offer than our day long large group bus tour. Our fantastic guide asked if we were on a tight schedule and as we were not, the 3 hours turned into a leisurely 4 hours. We got to sample a variety of local traditional foods and drinks while taking in the history of the area. It was a privilege to be taken by a young local person to visit areas less frequented by foreign tourists.”

“I travelled with a friend of mine. Really enjoyed this week. It took a day or two to acclimatise to the heat during the walks but then it was fine. Loved the kayaking option. So good we opted to do that again on our free day. Kas town is lovely, with lots of good restaurants and shops. The food was really good throughout the week. Healthy and tasty. Our guide, Maho, was a complete pro. Our group was lovely, everyone got on well. A good mixture of activity and some free time. After some of the walks, we got back to the hotel between 3 and 4 pm so had time to go and do other things or go for a swim in the pool. Oreo Hotel was a very pleasant place to stay and the staff looked after us well.”

“First holiday with this tour company, and they were excellent in every respect. Would definitely use them again. I would have preferred slightly longer walks, but I can see that in very hot weather, the walks we did would be enough. Each day was varied and just as walking became routine, sea kayaking delivered a great day out. The hotel pool was most welcome and having thought the rest day would be a waste, in fact it was lovely to have a day doing not much. As is delightful and everyone we met was friendly and helpful.”
Many hotels and tour guides run free walking tours for new tourists, and you only have to tip your guide at the end. It’s definitely a cost-effective way of getting your bearings in a new city.
The Lycian Way hike is probably the most famous walking tour in Turkey and connects 25 archeological sites along the way.
Turkey Walking tours are a great way to meet and interact with local people and see the country from their lens. They can even lend you valuable tips or direct you to great locations for food and sightseeing where regular tourists don’t visit.
Both the Carian Trail and the Lycian Way snake their way around the Mediterranean coastline, rewarding you with panoramic views across the water and into Europe.
Travel Tips for Walking Tours in Turkey
Take a walking food tour on the eastern side of Istanbul. There are so many food-based walking tours in Istanbul, but we recommend the Kadikoy neighborhood on the Asian side of the city for fantastic lamb kebabs, stuffed mussels, and more.
Find a free walking tour in major cities like Istanbul when you arrive. This is the most affordable way to explore major sites like the Grand Bazaar without getting lost.
Join a group or guided Turkey walking tour, especially if you are doing a long-distance trail like the Lycian Way, for safety and convenience. Group tours come with pre-arranged itineraries and accommodations.
Avoid walking tours in the summer months. Turkish summers are unreasonably hot and humid, often getting over 40°C. Opt for spring or autumn seasons instead.
Outside of the major cities and tourist resorts, ATMs are few and far between, so make sure to carry cash if you are venturing away from cities and tourist hotbeds.
Ensure that you bring clothing that can cover your head, shoulders, and knees while on a multi-day walking tour. Even though it can be hot in Turkey, it’s still a predominantly Muslim country where modesty is prized, so be respectful even if it does mean adding more layers.
