The Louvre

About The Louvre

Louvre, Paris

The Louvre, one of the most esteemed museums on the planet, is considered to be a top attraction in Paris, one that simply cannot be left out while visiting the city. As one of the largest and most diverse museums in the world, The Louvre showcases works of art that range from Greek, Egyptian and Mesopotamian antiques to Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Rembrandt masterpieces. And considering that it would take you approximately 9 months to check out every piece in the museum, planning your itinerary beforehand is essential.

A Weary Fantasy

The museum’s floor plan leaves you navigating through a labyrinth that could easily pass for a devilish board game with countless wrong turns and mysterious plots. With so many turns and staircases, numerous escalators, randomly closed sections and the hustle-bustle of tours, it feels like an airport terminal transported into an ancient castle. As you start your journey at the glass pyramid, you can easily expect to spend 4 – 5 hours navigating its galleries, trying to see everything worth seeing at The Louvre. The subterranean depths of the museum’s medieval era wonders give way to Northern European Paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries. And just when you’ve managed to recover from the adrenaline rush these exotic masterpieces give, you’re ushered into the Grande Galerie, home to captivating works of Italian artists such as Caravaggio, Mantegna and Bellini. Once you finally come to your senses, explore the ancient relics of Pre-Classical Greece, look at beautiful French Sculptures and walk through the riches of Asia, Africa and the Americas.

The Monalisa

No, we didn’t ignore her, we just felt that a lady so beautiful should have her own space. She demands your attention, leaves your better half green in envy and forces you to look at her with transfixed eyes for a moment too long. Monalisa, Leonardo da Vinci’s La Joconde, is the most famous artwork in the museum and perhaps one of the most iconic ones to have been made by man. No one leaves the museum without fighting and jostling for space, trying to get to the front of the line and seeing her in all her beauty behind that bulletproof screen and not just from a Wikipedia page.

Once you end your tour, you realize that you’ve still managed to miss out on a few galleries. But that’s okay. No one ever gets to see everything that The Louvre has on offer. Well, most don’t!
