Trip of a Lifetime
Jason Meisner From USA At
5 - Excellent
“I worked a lot with SurfIran before my trip on developing a custom itinerary. It worked out perfectly. We visited the historic sites and the tour guide, Ahmad, was full of knowledge about everything. We also ate at delicious restaurants and got a taste of everyday life in the cities. I had an amazing time wish I could do it all over again.”
Wonder people and sights!

Start your city tour in the morning. Travel to the lavish Golestan Palace, a World Heritage site. Built during the Qajar Dynasty that rose to power in the late 1700’s, this fabulous, walled complex is centred around a landscaped garden with tranquil pools.

Many of the elements you’ll admire todays date to the 19th century when local Qajari architects and artisans were looking to integrate traditional Persian styles with elements of Western and Russian origins. The palace building is among the oldest in modern Tehran and is still regarded as a crowning achievement of the Qajar era.

Time permitting, walk around the Tehran Bazaar, a few steps away from Golestan Palace. Continue along the Bazaar route to reach Timche Akbarian, which dates back by almost 260 years. Its main function was that of an exchange centre dealing with, among other things, gold. Later, it became the first bank of Iran and was run mostly by the Jews who were the prominent residents of the Oudlajan neighbourhood.

Visit the National Museum of Iran in the afternoon. See fabulous historical items that date from as far as 5000 BC to the advent of Islam in Iran.

Your next destination is Kashan, the city of textiles and ceramics. Start your Kashan tour by visiting the Bagh-e Fin Garden, which reflects ancient landscaping principles that trace their roots to the time of Cyrus the Great in the 6th century BCE.

Visit the historic Borujerdi House next. See its fine, decorative stucco motifs, its impressive domes, wall paintings and mosaics made with glass. This former merchant’s home is regarded as a masterpiece of traditional Persian architecture and boasts 130-foot-tall wind towers to catch lofty breezes and cool the entire house.

Leave Kashan behind and head for your next destination, Abyaneh, a village that is also known as the Red Village because of its red mud houses. The houses of Abyaneh bear an ancient architectural style and feature the use of clay as the main construction material along with latticed windows and wooden doors.

Continue your overland journey to Isfahan. As the 17th-century capital of the Safavid empire, Isfahan was one of the world’s greatest cities – architecturally striking and wealthy beyond imagination. Back then, visitors to this city included Europeans, Ottomans, Indians and Chinese. Isfahan was then the heart of a vast Persian empire that stretched from the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq to the Oxus River in Afghanistan.

Join our expert guide in exploring the city, starting with some of the centuries-old, still-elegant bridges that span the Zayandeh River. The 14th-century Shahrestan Bridge, for example, reminds one of the aqueducts of ancient Rome and is the oldest bridge in Iran.

Other famous bridges on the Zayandeh River are Sio-ce-pol and Khaju. There are sluice gates below the bridges to let the water flow down the river in the spring and there are beautiful stony archways above each gate.

Continue your Isfahan tour with a visit to Masjed-e Jame, another masterpiece of Iranian architecture, which covers nearly 5 acres of land and is located in the heart of this historic city. This is one of the oldest congregational mosques in the country.

Continue your journey to Imam Square, a 17th-century site that is one of the largest public spaces in the world. Take a trip to the Shah Mosque, which is widely revered as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, and enjoy the beauty of its intricate tile work as well as a graceful, soaring cupola and minarets.

Visit the music rooms and balconies of Ali Qapu Palace and marvel at their beauty. Travel to the Qeisarieh Bazaar, which surrounds Imam Square and has hundreds of vendors dealing with traditional arts and crafts, especially pottery, enamel, jewelry and delicately inlaid board games.

Explore Chehel Sotun next. Set amid a landscaped and forested park in front of a tranquil pool, this graceful pavilion was built by Shah Abbas II for entertainment and court receptions. Enter into the building through a portico supported by twenty slender wooden columns and discover soaring halls embellished with frescoes, paintings and mosaics. The Hall of Mirrors is especially breathtaking!

Visit the city’s Armenian quarter and learn more about the region's complex history. Get the chance to see several churches in the area, including the 17th-century Vank Cathedral that is known for its lavishly decorated interior and a unique blend of Islamic and European architectural elements.

Leave Garmeh behind and drive towards Meybod. Take a detour to visit Kharanagh. See its old town and single-minaret mosque as well as Kharanaq Castle, famous for its narrow winding alley ways.

Set along an ancient trade route, Meybod also offers a number of fascinating sites to visit, including its caravanserai. Built in a typical Safavid style, this ancient desert inn features verandahs, shaded passageways and nearly 100 rooms – some of which are now used as workshops. At the local icehouse, you’ll learn about the thick-clay construction method and subterranean chambers that allowed local residents to store ice and food even during the intense desert heat of summer before refrigeration was invited.

You have the option of having tonight’s dinner in a local restaurant and getting to know more about the lives of the people here. The ambience is a bit more laid back and the residents may seem a bit more reserved, but you’ll find them warm, friendly and eager to meet tourists.

Widely regarded as one of Iran's oldest continuously inhabited towns, Yazd's skyline is punctuated by minarets and ingeniously-designed wind towers that capture the desert breeze and use it to cool homes during hot summer months. In addition to that, Yazd is also the center of Iran’s Zoroastrian community.

Travel to the Tower of Silence and learn more about Zoroastrianism, an ancient, pre-Islamic religion. Until the mid-1900’s, the dead were transported to this tower where they were left to decompose and to be devoured by birds.

Visit Amir Chakhmaq Square and see the impressive Hussainiya – a congregation hall for Shia commemoration ceremonies. With its three tiers of recessed alcoves, all perfectly proportioned, its façade is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks. Take a trip to the Jame Mosque, built in 1324, where you can gaze upon the tallest minarets in the country.

At Zendan-e Eskandar, you’ll find an ancient domed structure with a deep, circular, brick-lined pit that resembles a dungeon. According to legend, the complex was built by Alexander the Great to hold prisoners during his conquest of Persia. Others believe it was constructed by the Persians to hold Alexander himself.

Among the many other historic sites to be seen in Yazd are its beautiful old houses and the Dowlat Abad Garden. Standing by the garden’s long pool, you’ll be shaded by ancient cypress trees. Ahead of you will be an 18th-century hexagonal pavilion with a beautiful stained-glass window and a graceful wind tower – the tallest in Iran.

Be prepared to spend the whole day on the road. Stock up on locally bought and easily found dates and pistachio nuts for the journey.

Stop on the way to Shiraz to visit Pasargadae, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is home to the tomb of Cyrus the Great and was the former capital of the Achaemenid empire. Spend some time exploring the site.

Next, drive a couple of miles to Naqsh-e-Rustam, the necropolis where Darius and his successors are buried. Carved into the side of a cliff, the site is extraordinary in its magnitude and sheer in its ambition.

Visit the legendary city of Persepolis, the former capital of Darius the Great that was founded in 512 BC. There was no other construction as impressive as this in the ancient world except, perhaps, in Karnak, Egypt.

While it was Darius who built the terraces, the apadana (great audience hall), tachara (palace), and the monumental staircases of the palace, it was his son, Xerxes, who added its harem and the Hall of 100 Columns.

Though a shadow of its former self now, the soaring pillars, terraces and sculptures of Persepolis are still there. Probably, the most impressive ones are the bas-reliefs that line the site and tell the story of ancient governors and kings that came to Persepolis to pay tribute to Persian emperors.

Continue your drive to Shiraz and check in at the hotel on reaching the city.

Take a trip to the Nasir-al-Mulk Mosque (Pink Mosque) after breakfast. This mosque was built by one of the local lords during the reign of the Qajar Dynasty and it took 12 years to complete. Its interiors are a magnificent masterpiece of design and display stunning colors. This is a space where light and worship intertwine. The mosque comes to life with sunrise when colours start dancing on its floors like whirling dervishes.

Head for the bustling Vakil Bazaar, home to hundreds of stores, beautiful courtyards and even an ancient caravanserai. Your next destination is the Karim Khan Citadel, built during the Zand Dynasty.

End your day in Shiraz on a tranquil note in the lovely Narenjestan Garden, laid out in the 19th century during the Qajar Dynasty.
