“I worked a lot with SurfIran before my trip on developing a custom itinerary. It worked out perfectly. We visited the historic sites and the tour guide, Ahmad, was full of knowledge about everything. We also ate at delicious restaurants and got a taste of everyday life in the cities. I had an amazing time wish I could do it all over again.”

“As an American, I was concerned about people not being welcoming, or having trouble with police or immigration authorities. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have never experienced more hospitality or openness in my life.”

Start your day by paying a visit to the lavish Golestan Palace. Built during the Qajar Dynasty that rose to power in the late 1700’s, this fabulous, walled complex is centered around a landscaped garden with tranquil pools. Many of the elements you’ll admire today date to the 19th century when local Qajari architects and artisans were looking to integrate traditional Persian style with elements of Western and Russian origins. The palace's buildings are among the oldest in Tehran and are still regarded as a crowning achievement of the Qajar era.

Explore the Tehran Bazaar if you can find some free time. You also have the option of trying dizi, one of the most delicious and traditional Iranian food. Dizi is a Mesopotamian stew usually made with lamb, chickpeas, white beans, onion, potatoes, tomatoes, turmeric and dried lime.

Visit the National Museum of Iran, an institution comprising of two complexes, one related to ancient Iran and another featuring Islamic era collections. Tonight’s dinner is in a local restaurant that offers you a chance to experience Iranian culture and hospitality. See the Tehran Nature Bridge after the dinner is over. Then catch a flight to Tabriz.

Start your city tour by visiting the Kabud Mosque, which was completed in 1465 before skilled artisans spent another quarter century painstakingly covering the entire mosque with intricately painted, brilliantly blue tiles. Often referred to as the 'Blue Mosque', this magnificent landmark was extensively damaged during two 18th-century earthquakes.

Next door is the Azerbaijan Museum, where you have the chance to see a vast collection of artefacts spanning millennia of human history and culture in the region. Visit Arg-e Alishah, an imposing but unfinished 14th-century monument that later served as a military fortress during the Russo-Persian Wars of the 19th century.

End the morning exploring the Grand Bazaar, the only bazaar on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. The present-day structure, a vast maze-like complex of bricked arches and vaulted passageways, still evokes the spirit of its earliest days when Tabriz was one of the most important commercial centers along the ancient Silk Road. Chat with merchants and browse through collections of jewelry, carpets and spices. Mingle with friendly residents who have come to buy their daily staples.

Visit Shah Golu (El-Golu), a large park with an artificial lake in the middle, at the end of the tour.

Fly to Shiraz from Tabriz. Start your full-day, guided tour of Shiraz after breakfast. Visit the Nasir-al-Mulk Mosque (Pink Mosque), a few steps away from Vakil Bazaar. This mosque was built as per the order of one of the lords during the reign of the Qajar Dynasty, Mirza Hasan ‘Ali Nasir-al-Mulk, and it took 12 years to complete. Its interiors are a magnificent masterpiece of design with stunning colors. This is a space where light and worship intertwine. The mosque comes to life with sunrise and colours dance on its floor throughout the day like whirling dervishes.

Visit the Qavam House next and visit the Karim Khan Citadel built during the Zand Dynasty after that. Explore Arge Karim Khan, a museum that once served as a fortress and a prison. Built in the 12th century under the Zand Dynasty, this massive structure involved the era's top architects and artists.

Explore and shop in the bustling Vakil Bazaar, home to hundreds of stores, beautiful courtyards and even an ancient caravanserai.

Visit the lovely garden tombs of Sa’adi and Hafez, two of the most outstanding poets of Persia. See the Qur'an Gate, once the city's main entry point, which stands majestically at the northeastern end of Shiraz. We will drive for a whole day today to reach Yazd. So it is a good idea to stock up on locally bought and easily found dates and pistachio nuts for the journey. Stopped en route to Yazd to visit the legendary city of Persepolis, the former capital of Darius the Great which was founded in 512 BC.

While it was Darius who built the terraces, the apadana (great audience hall), tachara (palace), and the monumental staircases of the palace, it was his son, Xerxes, who added its harem and the Hall of 100 Columns.

Though a shadow of its former self now, the soaring pillars, terraces and sculptures of Persepolis are still there. Probably, the most impressive ones are the bas-reliefs that line the site and tell the story of ancient governors and kings that came to Persepolis to pay tribute to Persian emperors.

Drive a couple of miles further to Naqsh-e-Rustam, the necropolis where Darius and his successors are buried. Then visit Pasargadae, a UNESCO World Heritage site which is home to the tomb of Cyrus the Great and was formerly the capital of the Achaemenid Empire, before heading for Yazd.

Start your sightseeing tour of Yazd, one of Iran’s oldest continuously inhabited towns that is also the center of Iran’s Zoroastrian community.

Travel to the Tower of Silence and learn more about Zoroastrianism, an ancient, pre-Islamic religion. Until the mid-1900’s, the dead were transported to this tower where they were left to decompose and to be devoured by birds.

Visit Amir Chakhmaq Square and see the impressive Hussainiya – a congregation hall for Shia commemoration ceremonies. With its three tiers of recessed alcoves, all perfectly proportioned, its façade is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks. Take a trip to the Friday Mosque, built in 1324, after that and get the chance to gaze at the tallest minarets in the country.

At Zendan-e Eskandar, you’ll find an ancient domed structure with a deep, circular, brick-lined pit that resembles a dungeon. According to legend, the complex was built by Alexander the Great to hold prisoners during his conquest of Persia. Others believe it was constructed by the Persians to hold Alexander himself.

Among the many other historic sites to be seen in Yazd are beautiful old homes and the Dowlat Abad Garden. Standing by the garden’s long reflecting pool, you’ll be shaded by ancient cypress trees. Ahead of you is an 18th-century hexagonal pavilion with a beautiful stained glass window and a graceful wind tower – the tallest in Iran. All around are flowering fruit trees and other ornamental plants and trees.

Start your overland journey from Yazd to Isfahan. Take a detour to the small town of Meybod. Set along an ancient trade route, Meybod also offers a number of fascinating sites to visit, including its caravanserai. Built in a typical Safavid style, this ancient desert inn features verandahs, shaded passageways and nearly 100 rooms – some of which are now used as workshops.

At the local icehouse, you’ll learn about the thick-clay construction and subterranean chambers that allowed local residents to store ice and food even during the intense desert heat of summer before refrigeration came along.

Visit Na’in, an ancient community with origins dating back to the 8th century AD. At the local Ethnographic Museum, set in an erstwhile private residence, you’ll get the chance to learn more about the region’s history and culture. Continue your journey to Isfahan and check in at the hotel upon arrival.

Isfahan has long been the must-see destination for any visitor in Iran. "Isfahan is half the world," was the phrase used to describe the city in the 16th century when Shah Abbas moved the capital here.

Visit Imam Square, one of the largest such squares in the world. Walk up to Ali Qapu Palace to admire the fountains and beautiful mosques that make up the square. Explore two mosques, Sheikh Lotfollah (also known as the Ladies Mosque) and the Shah Mosque, located on the corner of the square. The Shah mosque is probably the best known mosque in Iran as it is regarded as the masterpiece of Persian architecture. you also have the option of experiencing zurkhaneh, a traditional strength-demonstration and wrestling event.

Up next is Chehel Sotun. Set in a landscaped and forested park in front of a tranquil reflecting pool, this graceful pavilion was built by Shah Abbas II for entertainment and court receptions. Enter into the building through a portico supported by twenty slender wooden columns and discover soaring halls embellished with frescoes, paintings and mosaics. The Hall of Mirrors is especially breathtaking!

Wander through the rest of Isfahan. Visit its nearly 4km-long bazaar and find different goods at a bargain price. Get the chance to learn more about the lives of the people.

Your Isfahan tour continues with a visit to the Harun-e Velayat Shrine. Built in 1512, the shrine’s dome offers a particularly fine example of Iranian tile work. Gazing up at the graceful 11th-century Ali Minaret, the oldest in Isfahan, offers further insight into the skill of Iranian architects and builders.

In the city’s Armenian quarter, you’ll get the chance to delve more deeply into the region’s complex history. Visit several churches in the area, including the 17th-century Vank Cathedral with its lavishly decorated interior and a unique blend of Islamic and European architectural elements.

See the centuries-old, still-elegant bridges that span the Zayandeh River. The 14th-century Shahrestan Bridge, for example, reminds one of the aqueducts of ancient Rome and is the oldest bridge in Iran.

Other famous bridges on the Zayandeh River are Sio-ce-pol and Khaju. There are sluice gates below the bridges to let the water flow down the river in the spring and there are beautiful stony archways above each gate.

Drive to Kashan after breakfast. Visit the Abyaneh Village en route. The village is also known as the Red Village because of its red-mud houses (the area has red soil). The houses of Abyaneh bear an ancient architectural style and feature the use of clay as the main construction material along with latticed windows and wooden doors.

Reach Kashan, a town originally famous for its textiles and ceramic production but now better known for the Fin Garden and its extensive bazaar and hamams. The Fin Garden is your first stop. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this Persian garden reflects ancient landscaping principles that trace their roots to the time of Cyrus the Great in the 6th century BCE.

Head for the bazaar area, a widespread complex filled with shops, hamams and mosques. You have the option of visiting a traditional tea house for lunch. Your next destination is the Bourojerdi House and the Agha Bozorg Mosque. Drive to Tehran after that.
