Tashkent Tour Reviews

5 - Excellent

The Silk Road in September
5 - Excellent
  • Anonymous
“Overall a fantastic trip but not a relaxing one. Each country is different from the others and it feels like three holidays in one. Early starts and long journeys made for arduous travelling at times and the border crossing into China was a pain, but spectacular scenery and reasonably regular stops made it interesting and nearly every day had highlights to look forward to. The hotels were comfortable and the food was better and more varied that we were led to believe from reading previous reviews. I'd score it 9 out of 10 overall.”
Uzbekistan Uncovered
4 - Very Good
  • Anonymous
“This was well planned and organised, and very satisfactory. The variety, with city explorations plus trips to the desert fortresses and into the desert to stay in yurts, was a good idea, but entailed a lot of time spent in the bus driving over indifferent roads. Hard to avoid that, but the journeys used a lot of time. The advance notes were adequate, but incremental changes had been inserted and noted, some of which conflicted with the earlier text, but the whole document had not been adjusted and edited to create a clear narrative (about the details and practicalities, such as liability for a departure airport tax). The local leadership was excellent and might be worth more emphasis - it was a 24/7 service whilst I certainly expected to be relying on my own resources much more. The hotels were generally good (even the Uzbekistan in Tashkent had no hot water on day one, and the loos in Bukhara were somewhat smelly). The airline trip was really uncomfortable in both directions - London to Tashkent direct might only be possible with Uzbekistan Airlines, which is a plus, but the seating and the service - the food - was quite dreadful.”
Very well-run tour of a great destination
5 - Excellent

“This was a fascinating insight into a country I knew little about. The pace was good, and both the sites and the sights were interesting and varied. With one exception, the accomodation was better than my expectations. We were 15 people in a full-size coach, a real luxury for the several long drives. It was great to be able to swap sides to see a better view, or join others for a chat. The group were a pleasant assortment of people who got on well with each other and were enjoyable company.”

Tashkent - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

A trip to Tashkent will allow you to experience an eclectic mix of traditional Uzbek culture, 20th Century Soviet style and the ever-growing atmosphere of modernity. Once an important point of the Silk Road, and today the largest central Asian metropolis, a visit to Tashkent will provide you with an ideal opportunity you to explore the finest of Uzbekistan’s rich, millennia-old heritage.

Travel Highlights

  • The beautiful, blue-domed Amir Timur Museum is a stunning architectural feat that is dedicated to the Turco-Mongol conqueror, one of the most important historical figures of the region.
  • Uzbekistan State Museum of History is an appealing architectural fusion of local and Soviet style. It houses over 250,000 artefacts originating from central Asia.
  • A true oasis in the middle of the city, the Tashkent Botanical Garden is a harmonious collection of over 4,500 species of flowers, trees and other plants. It is ideal when you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the urban center.
  • The intricately ornate State Museum of Applied Art dates back to the early 20th century. Today, it hosts some of the finest examples of local applied art, including embroidery, carpet weaving and jewelry making.

Travel Tips

  • The most convenient way to get around the Uzbek capital is by metro. The city has three lines, which cover most of the sightseeing areas. Furthermore, riding the metro will give you a chance to see the grand, lavishly ornate Soviet-style underground stations.
  • Uzbek is the official language is Tashkent; however, you will find most people and businesses communicate in Russian.
  • Summers in Tashkent (especially months of July and August) tend to get very hot, while it’s not unusual for temperatures to drop below zero during winter months. Therefore, it is advisable to visit the Uzbek capital during spring (April to June) or early fall (September to mid-October), when the weather is moderate and ideal for sightseeing.
