In the summertime, the weather in Uruguay is warm and welcoming, especially for those fleeing the cold winters in the Northern Hemisphere. The temperatures will be a little high, but in the coastal side, the sea breeze will keep things comfortable enough. Expect some showers in Montevideo during this season, but keep in mind that the rains are more of a welcome relief than a hindrance.

  • Highlights: This is the peak season to visit Uruguay, so make sure you get your bookings done early enough. From the mid of January, the Carnival celebrations will take over the entire country, with drums and dancing taking over the streets at Montevideo. For a more uniquely Uruguayan experience, you go to Tacuarembo, where the best gaucho festival in Uruguay takes place - believe us, it is a horse-riding rodeo like you’ve never seen before! This is also the perfect time to visit La Barra, or Manantiales, to enjoy the beautiful waters.

April to June — Fall / Good Season

Most of the peak holiday crowd would have left the country by this time, so you will definitely get a few discounts. The weather in Uruguay during this period is lower, compared to summer, but the weather will still be warm and temperate, especially around the coastal areas.

  • Highlights: If you’re a fan of swimming, this is when to visit Uruguay. Head to Jose Ignacio, or the relatively newer beaches at Cabo Polonio, Carrasco or Punta del Diablo for a great time by the ocean. July to September — Winter / Low Season

Even though it is winter, there is enough of sunlight during the day, so you won't be living in the dark.

This is the coldest season in Uruguay, but it’s rarely freezing cold. There is plenty of sunshine during the day, so you won’t have to worry about living in the dark either. This is the off-season for travel in Uruguay, so if you’re looking for discounts, now is a great time. However, you should keep in mind that a lot of beaches and beach resorts close down for this period, so you might not be able to experience the country in its entirety.
