The Malta and Gozo Family Holiday tour starts in Sliema and ends in Gozo. The Malta and Gozo Family Holiday is a Family tour that takes 8 days taking you from Sliema to Gozo and through other destinations in Europe.

With a lovely year-round climate, warm Mediterranean waters and a fascinating culture, Malta is a great place for active families to explore. Travel back in time and stroll through the historic streets of Valletta. Cycle past domed churches and freewheel across Gozo’s undulating coastline. Head out to sea and don a mask and snorkel to view the underwater world around Comino. While the islands each have their own unique charm, this easygoing adventure combines all three to deliver a memorable holiday that will entertain young and big kids alike.
Your trip starts with arrival into Malta, the most cosmopolitan of the three islands of the Maltese archipelago – Malta, Gozo and Comino. Your accommodation is in the seaside suburb of Sliema, once the home of the Matlese upper classes, who sought to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital Valletta, which sits across the water.

You can arrive at any time today as there are no activities planned until a group meeting this evening at 5.30pm. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, maybe arrive a day early so you're able to attend. If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader.

A 5-10 minute stroll from the hotel down to the promenade brings you good views of Valletta, and if you continue along the waterfront you’ll come across promenading families out for their daily passeggiata (evening stroll) among joggers and those out walking their dog.

Today you’ll head into the capital and enjoy a full day’s tour of the UNESCO World heritage site of Valletta. Built in the 16th century, find out how hundreds of years of visitors and conquerors have shaped the unique Maltese culture and language.

Take a walking tour around this compact, Baroque-character city (it covers only 0.5 square miles), and you’ll soon come across intriguing historical sites around every corner: votive statues, niches, gorgeous wooden balconies, fountains and coats of arms high up on parapets. Barrakka Gardens offers a fantastic bird’s eye view of the Grand Harbour of Malta, while narrow side streets are full of tiny quaint shops and cafés. Wander down the streets and travel between something like the vintage seventies, then be transported back to the present day by Valletta's main streets, lined with larger international branded shops for fashion, music, jewellery and much more.

Tonight, perhaps enjoy a dinner at the Valletta waterfront, or in one of the fancy restaurants found inside 17th century palaces.

Today is free for you to explore the Sliema and the island however you’d like, and choose from a variety of activities to make the most of your time in this Mediterranean jewel. For something both fun and chilled out, hit the water at the Splash and Fun Water Park. If a thrill is what you’re after, then the Black Hole is perfect for you – slide through a closed 120 metre long tube on a torrent of water from the height of 12 metres!

For a more laidback experience, where there are family slides and pools, a wave pool, and the lazy river. Plus, there’s soapy football and a diving pool. Splash and Fun definitely lives up to its name! Another fun place is Sweethaven village, a colourful place also known as Popeye Village and used as the set of the 1980 film. It’s full of rides and games, and a good option for younger kids.

For something more cultural and historical, maybe visit the end of the island fishing village of Marsaxlokk for a real slice of Maltese life, or head west to medieval Mdina, a beautiful hilltop walled town of atmospheric architectural streets. Otherwise, just relax or go horse riding along the long sandy beaches of Golden Bay.

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast in Malta and then catch the boat across the sea to the diminutive island of Gozo. Fourteen kilometres across at its widest point and just 8 kilometres away from the main island, it’s a world away from its bigger, busier sibling.

Populated with tiny villages and pretty hills this is a delightful place to begin your Mediterranean adventure. Xlendi, your base in Gozo was once a quiet fishing village. Your hotel is only meters from the beautiful bay where you can swim or snorkel. Jump on a bike this afternoon to explore the quiet paths and trails of this lovely island. Pass through friendly villages, past old churches and ancient stone temples, cycle up to panoramic peaks and along trails seldom visited by any other sort of vehicle, let alone travellers, as well as descending into valleys filled with fruit trees.

With any free time today you can enjoy the delightful harbour around Xlendi, maybe heading up its famous tower for a great overview of the town.

Enjoy a pretty unique experience today as you discover a tranquil day in the life of a local shepherd at the Ager Foundation, a pioneer and promoter of eco tourism in Gozo. Gozitan shepherds still tend their sheep and goats in this pristine countryside, accompanied by dogs guiding the herd on its way.

You’ll get a hands experience of a life on a farm – feeding hens, rabbits, goats and other animals, collecting freshly laid eggs, and even milking sheep and goats. You’ll also get involved in making the local Gozitan cheese, ‘gbejniet’, which is eaten fresh, sundried, salted or peppered. All this action is sure to make you hungry, so afterwards you’ll get stuck into an authentic traditional lunch with your host, featuring Gozitan cheese, olives, sundried tomatoes and crusty oven baked bread – delicious!

The rest of the day is free to wander to scenic viewpoints or perfect that beach pose.

Today you’ll leave Gozo and take a short boat ride out to Comino, a tiny speck of land a kilometre or so off the coast of Malta that’s now a wildlife sanctuary.

Your boat trip takes you around the island to drop anchor in one of the secluded bays that mark the coastline against the clear blue water. From the boat, you and the kids can have a go at snorkelling in the Mediterranean and marvel at the fish and other marine life around the island. If snorkelling not’s your thing, why not just take a swim in the sea and let the sun’s rays wash over you, unwinding in this peaceful haven that’s almost from a dream. In the afternoon, after a short boat trip around the island, its hidden caves and tall cliffs, return to your Gozo home for the last couple of nights.

  • St. Patricks Hotel or similar
This morning’s free to have a leisurely lie-in or a relaxed breakfast, before jumping in a jeep this afternoon to explore the island. Gozo is known as the fruit basket of Malta, and you’ll see much of the plants and animals of the island as you explore the more remote parts of Gozo.

The safari takes in hidden villages, secret beaches and ancient temples, as well as a drive out to Dwejra Bay.

Tonight, why not gather together the rest of your group and head out for a final celebratory dinner as this magnificent Malta family adventure comes to an end.

To give you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There's no obligation to do this though.

  • Climate and seasonal

Age restrictions apply to this trip: minimum age 5

  • A couple of rules

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Intrepid travellers. Intrepid's philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter and in particular, the local people who make our destinations such special places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don’t tolerate any form of violence (verbal or physical) or sexual harassment at Intrepid, either between passengers or involving our leaders, local operators or locals.

  • Accommodation notes

    GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS:
Family of two - All family groupings of two will be put into a twin room.

Family of three - Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that, in practice, a triple room will often simply be a twin room with a mattress on the floor or a further bed squashed in. Where it is impossible to provide a triple room, you will have to decide which of your party takes the single room.

Family of four or more - You will most likely stay in two twin rooms. If and wherever possible we will aim put you in a quadruple room. Whilst we will do our very best to ensure that families are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we can’t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over where you will be put. You need to come prepared for this.

Accommodation is clean and simple. You'll mainly stay in small, locally-run, 2-3 star hotels and guesthouses, which reflect the character of the area, generally these will be a twin room with private facilities. Sometimes you'll stay in larger, more comfortable hotels or occasionally rustic accommodation with basic facilities. We use a variety of accommodation on most trips; chosen for their value for money, location and atmosphere. We also try and incorporate unique accommodation experiences, such as a night with a local tribe, or sleeping under the stars in the desert.

  • Transport notes

We believe that the vehicles you use pay an important part in your holiday so where possible we include a wide variety of vehicles from local remorks or tuk tuks in Asia to feluccas on the Nile as well as the ubiquitous air conditioned minibus.

  • Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

A single supplement is available on this trip, please refer to your booking agent for further information.

  • Itinerary disclaimer

Occasionally our itineraries are updated during the year to incorporate improvements stemming from past travellers' comments and our own research. The information given in this itinerary may be slightly different to that in the brochure. It's very important that you print and review a final copy of your Essential Trip Information a couple of days prior to travel, in case there have been changes that affect your plans. If you have any queries, please contact your travel agent or our staff. We are here to help you! Please note that while we operate successful trips in this region throughout the year, some changes may occur in our itineraries due to inclement weather and common seasonal changes to timetables and transport routes. This can happen with little notice so please be prepared for modifications to the route. The order and timing of included activities in each location may also vary from time to time.

    OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
A selection of optional activities are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isn't an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only. Prices are approximate and are for entrance only and don’t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability and it may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination. Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. This means that it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, however we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. Activities not listed above have not been assessed by us and as such our staff and leaders are unable to assist you with booking these activities. The decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion and risk.
