San Jose Tours and Trips 2024/2025

Holidays in San Jose are not something most people on a Costa Rica tour get to experience. For most holidaymakers, the Costa Rican capital and its airport only serve as a transit point to the coast and the country’s famed beaches. However, a visit to San Jose can be incredibly rewarding because it offers a glimpse into everyday life in Costa Rica in a way you won’t be able to experience at the seaside resorts.

San Jose Tour Reviews

Excellent adventure!
5 - Excellent
  • Alexander Hart
“My trip was wonderful -- I can't say enough good things about Mario and his team! I was travelling solo, and they worked with me to customize the itinerary to be exactly what I needed alongside a work trip I had right before. All of the guides and other staff members were very professional, kind, and prepared. Pickups were on time, and even mundane drives were filled with interesting information and good conversation. Special shoutout to Alberto, who took me to Tortuguero and was so knowledgeable about wildlife (and whose keen eyes spotted some spider monkeys on the drive home, enabling us to stop and see them and some howler monkeys). A true highlight! But everyone was wonderful -- definitely recommend.”

“This trip exceeded my expectations! The age range was ideal and ranged between 22 and 28. The food was great and so were all the activities I participated in. The tour guide Laura was very funny and knowledgeable and ensured we were all safe at all times.”

“We started off San Jose and explored the culture. Food was amazing. Next we headed out to Pacuera River to whitewater raft for two days. Got to stay in the rainforest with huts and the guides/volunteers were Amazing. So attentive, knowledgeable and kind. They kept us well fed. Our next trip took us to LA Fortuna....long drive but worth it. The hanging bridges, waterfall, and hot springs all were very enjoyable. We were lucky enough to see spider monkeys and other native wildlife ssooo cool! We then went to Quepas near Manuel Antonio to enjoy the Pacific beach. Beautiful as well. The water is very warm. Other wildlife we saw were macaws, iguanas, chipocun monkeys. Last destination back to San Jose. Enjoyed walking around the market streets. Our drivers, guides, and meals were all great.”

San Jose - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Tour Highlights

  • Teatro Nacional, or the National Theater, is an opulent building located at the central square called Plaza del Cultura. It hosts a variety of theater performances, concerts and other cultural events.
  • Jade Museum, located in a modern, architecturally distinct building, holds an impressive collection of pre-Columbian artefacts made using this semi-precious stone.
  • Situated in downtown San Jose, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum treasures over a thousand gold, ceramic and stone artefacts made by various groups who have inhabited present-day Costa Rica.
  • La Sabana Metropolitan Park is a breathtaking urban green space that sprawls for 72 acres. It is the perfect place to unwind away from the capital’s hectic traffic.
  • San Jose is also a great starting destination for day trips in the wider region. Coffee plantations, historical cities and volcanos can be visited within an hour's drive from the main city center.

Travel Tips

  • If you truly want to soak up the vibrant ambient of the Costa Rican capital, head over to the Barrio Amon, an area nestled north of Plaza Espana. In this historic neighborhood, you will have an opportunity to see picturesque mansions in various architectural styles, some of which in recent years have been converted into boutique shops, restaurants and hotels.
  • Even though downtown San Jose is best explored on foot, the chaotic traffic makes it hard for tourists to get around. Pedestrians generally do not have the right of way, so you should be careful when crossing the street and always watch out for reckless cars and scooters.
  • The Costa Rican capital enjoys warm temperatures year-round, however, if you want to experience the city without worrying about rain, plan your visit during the dry season, which lasts from mid-December to April.
