Rio’ coastline is truly spectacular, particularly the stretch known as the “Leme to Pontal” stretch. Just ask any carioca, and they will sing praises of this stretch, before asking you how much of the stretch have you covered. Leme refers to the beach located between Sugar Loaf and Copa. Pontal is a cartoonishly egg-shaped peninsula lying at the very end of the Recreio Beach, after Barra.
This 60 km stretch has to be lived, at your own pace, and certainly not in a bus or a car transfer. The stretch presents 8 stunning beaches, depending on how you count them (Recreio and Barra are geographically the same beach, Leme and Copa like-wise, etc.)
However, all of these are beautiful despite being urban beaches, are all different from each other, and deserve to be enjoyed, even if for just an hour. The perfect way to explore the beaches of Rio at your own pace is by car. And the ultimate way is to do so in a convertible.
Rio finally has its own sports car rental company, Rio Exotic Cars, which boasts of a fleet of 16 cars, which range from the affordable yet intuitive Mini Coopers to high-end and luxurious Ferraris and Porsches. So you can roll down the convertible roof, put your Kennedy RayBans on and explore beyond the tourist area known as zona sul.
