Be amazed by the incredible demonstration of nature’s power and watch the children’s eyes light up at the dramatic and moving landscapes. After spending time relaxing in the famous Blue Lagoon, explore some of the island’s most stunning highlights with the family. From spouting geysers and plunging waterfalls to frozen glaciers and caves of lava tubes, soak up the unique spirit of this land of wonders and enjoy an unforgettable family experience.
Hallo! Welcome to Iceland. The world's northernmost capital of Reykjavik lies just below the Arctic Circle. The city sees around four hours of sunlight a day in winter, and a sunglass-required 22 hours or more in summer! You can arrive at any time during the day as there are no activities planned until a Welcome Meeting at 6pm today – see reception for more details. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please have these on hand. If you arrive early then maybe explore Viking history over at the National Museum, or join locals who gossip and chatter in the Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool.

Following the route of the 'Golden Circle' head out to Þingvellir National Park, home to the Parliament Plains. Þingvellir was the location of Iceland's first parliament, founded in 930, and is also the home to a fascinating geological formation. This is where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia have pulled apart and have filled with fresh water. From there, drive to the Geyser geothermal area to see the spectacular show of a hot spring that shoots water 20-30 metres in the air. Continue on to the immense beauty and power of Gullfoss, the double Golden Waterfall, where on a sunny day you can see a rainbow in the spray above the waterfall. The geyser is so Icelandic that the ancient local word ‘geysa’ (meaning to gush) is now the name given to a high-pressure eruption of water from the land the world over. In the afternoon, head to the Hvita River for a rafting tour, which has a perfectly balanced mix of serene canyons, enjoyable waves, and rapids. You’ll then reach your accommodation in the Hvolsvollur area.

Start the day with a visit to the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Visitors Centre, where you’ll learn more about the volcano that famously erupted in 2010, stopping flights all over Europe with its ash cloud. Here you can see a personal and emotive film that follows one family and their struggle to live with the lava during and after the dramatic explosion. Next, drive through the lava of the 1972 Laki eruption and black sand beaches towards Skaftafell National Park, a rugged landscape of glaciers and mountains. There are no roads in the park, but a series of hiking trails allow exploration of the area. You are following in the footsteps of James Bond in ‘Die another Day’, Lara Croft in ‘Tomb Raider’, and Bruce Wayne in ‘Batman Begins’ – all movies that were filmed in this region. From there, drive to the Glacier Lagoon (Jokulsarlon) for a boat tour between the icebergs. Moving between the huge natural ice sculptures as they float past you on their way out to sea is pretty magical. From here, it’s not far to your guesthouse, which has volcanic cliffs on one side and the sea on the other.

Notes: Total driving distance approximately 270 km.

Today, after breakfast drive back through the beautiful scenery of Iceland's South Shore towards the oasis at Skaftafell National Park, close to Vatnajökull, Europe's biggest glacier. The national park is home to some of Iceland’s best scenery: breath-taking landscapes of towering mountains, beautiful glaciers, and a vast variety of plants and wild life. In the park lies half of the largest ice cap in Europe – Vatnajökull – and it is surrounded by glaciers on three sides. The views here are astonishing and vast, with the park making up 13% of Iceland. From far away it looks pristine and smooth, but up-close you’ll discover a world of deep crevasses up to 10 stories deep, along with glacial ice sculptures and wonderful shades of blue. On a 2-hour walk across the glacier’s ice-strewn expanse, you’ll get a true sense of its scale. This is a truly exciting and unique experience, and it’s sad to think that the glacier is shrinking due to rising world temperatures, and in some years it may be gone. Drink in the incredible views before today's journey ends and we spend the night i the Hvolsvollur area.

Notes: Total driving distance approximately 200 km.

Head back towards Reykjavik, but before you get there you’ll first go on a ‘Hot Spring hunt’. Head towards the small town of Hveragerði, where you’ll begin a hike with a difference. Walk through the phenomenal Smokey Valley – or Reykjadalur – and find endless places to bathe in naturally heated water. In summer there’s an explosion of green in the area, and you’ll walk through grass and aromatic flowers for a total of around 2 hours, dipping into crystal clear water from the hot springs which, when mixed with that from the mountain springs, is the ideal temperature for bathing. The valley has an amazing abundance of geothermal phenomena, like mud pots, fumaroles and hot springs. You’ll then continue your exploration of Iceland’s amazing natural creations with a trip underground. There are cave systems throughout the country, underground tubes formed by magma making its way through the earth thousands of years ago. Exploring the caves, you’ll see an endless variety of colours and magical rock formations, and discover more about how Iceland was created. Return to Reykjavik for the night.

Notes: Total driving distance approximately 180 km.

This morning you will visit one of the most famous and instantly recognisable thermal springs in the world – the Blue Lagoon. The world-renowned Blue Lagoon is filled with pleasantly warm mineral-rich geothermal water in the middle of a black lava field. The high natural levels of silica, algae and minerals give the Lagoon its rich blue colour. The silica and minerals are also given recognition for the healing powers of the Lagoon, which help cure skin diseases such as psoriasis. The modern facilities have been developed into a wellness complex including saunas, a warm flowing waterfall, and in-water treatments and massages using the all-natural Blue Lagoon skin care products. A visit here will easily soak away life’s daily stresses and you will most likely come out feeling renewed and invigorated. Temperatures in the swimming area can reach as high as 40 degrees, so if you do decide that you want to take a dip, make sure you are prepared for the heat!

After the dip we head back into town where the afternoon will be yours to explore on your own.

Iceland's capital has an eclectic arts and music scene, loads of quirky cafes and a great laid-back vibe. Perhaps browse some of the city's great art galleries. If you feel like something more active, you can take a ride on an Icelandic horse, see killer whales just off-shore on a whale watching expedition, or pull on a dry suit to snorkel between two tectonic plates in the Silfra Fissure, a unique experience that you can't find anywhere else in the world. If you can’t get enough of the nearby waterfalls and geysers then maybe take another trip out to get your fix, walk along another glacier or head to an ice cave, jump in a special jeep to navigate the steepest and rockiest of terrains, or get up close and personal with a volcano. There are so many options to get as active, or be as relaxed, as you like.
Today is a departure day as you farewell Iceland and head home to plan your next adventure.

  • Joining point description

Hotel Klettur is a stone's throw from downtown. The hotel’s look and interior get their inspiration from Icelandic nature, and its name is derived from the rock that bursts through the wall on the first floor. It is said that the rock has been integrated into the building in order to keep the elves happy that live within the rock. From Hotel Klettur it is a short walk to the main shopping area of Laugavegur street, and Iceland's highest building, the magnificent Hallgrímskirkja church, is a 10-minute walk away. The hotel offers modern brightly decorated guest rooms with free Wi-Fi, TV and private bathrooms. A continental breakfast is available in the mornings.

  • Joining point instructions

  • Group leader

    Family Trips

All Intrepid Family trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to assist your family take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for fun things to do and see- for both kids and parents, recommend great local eating venues that will even get the kids trying new things, and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects.

Our leaders are not babysitters on this trip - we leave that to you (the experts), but they will make sure that group members of all ages are able to explore their destination safely and with as much fun as possible. Our group leaders are not responsible for looking after children at any time and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times throughout this itinerary.

  • Visas

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas. Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarise yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

Visas for Iceland are not required for passport holders of the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada. All other nationalities should check with the relevant authorities.

  • Is this trip right for you

This trip includes rafting on the Hvita River – there is a minimum age of 11 years old for this activity.

  • Health

All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to cope with our style of travel. Please note that if, in the opinion of our group leader or local guide, any traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, Intrepid Travel reserves the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements as they may not easily be obtained at the locations on this trip. Please ensure that you are adequately prepared.

  • Food and dietary requirements

While travelling with us you'll experience a vast array of dishes, beverages, dining experiences, ingredients and produce.

To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, the trip price does not include all meals. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility – whether you wish to partake in budget, mid-range or high-end dining options. Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. Generally, our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company, however there's no obligation to do this.

For travellers wanting to eat at a particular high profile and/or ‘fine dining’ restaurant, there will be specified free nights in certain locations where you can make your own restaurant reservations. It is recommended you make reservations for high profile and/or ‘fine dining’ restaurants well in advance of your departure, as there can be long lead times for booking in some instances.

  • Money matters

    CURRENCY
The official currency in Iceland is the Icelandic Krona (ISK).

    CASH
Please note that credit cards are virtually accepted everywhere throughout Iceland, and you can get by without withdrawing any cash. However if you do need an ATM, they are available in most towns. Please check with your bank about overseas withdrawal fees before you depart. Some banks will allow a cash advance against a major credit card which will incur a service charge of 5% or more. Currency exchange is available at major banks and some hotels. The easiest foreign currencies to exchange are USD and EUR, however please be aware of the security risk of carrying large amounts of cash.

    SPENDING MONEY:
When it comes to spending money on the trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget a sensible amount for things like meals not included, drinks, shopping, optional activities and laundry. It's always better to bring a little more than you think you'll need. Also make sure you've read your trip details thoroughly so you know what's included in the trip price and what isn't. This should make budgeting a little easier. You'll find this info in the Inclusions section of your Essential Trip Information (that's this document).

    TIPPING
If you're happy with the services provided a tip - though not compulsory - is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it's of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid destinations. The following amounts are per person suggestions based on local considerations and feedback from our past travellers: In local markets and basic restaurants and cafes - round your bill up to the nearest €1. In more up-market restaurants we suggest 5% to 10% of your bill. Throughout your trip you may at times have a local guide in addition to your tour leader. We suggest €2-€3 per day for local guides. You may also have a range of drivers on your trip. Some may be with you for a short journey while others may be with you for several days. We would suggest a higher tip for those more involved with the group, however we suggest €1-€2 per day for drivers. You may also consider tipping your tour leader for outstanding service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline €4-€5 per person, per day can be used. Of course you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service. In total, we recommend you budget approx €5-€10 per day of your trip to cover tipping.

    DEPARTURE TAX
All departure taxes should be included in your international flight ticket.

Please budget for additional meals and expenses while on your trip. Our suggestion is based on past traveller feedback but you may choose to spend more or less.

    CONTINGENCY FUNDS:
We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. Please make sure you have access to an extra US$500 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures). Sometimes these things necessitate last minute changes to enable our trips to continue to run, and as a result there may be some extra costs involved.

  • A couple of rules

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Intrepid travellers. Intrepid's philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter and in particular, the local people who make our destinations such special places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader or local representative has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure on their trip. We don’t tolerate any form of sexual harassment at Intrepid, either between passengers or involving our leaders or local operators. Sexual relationships (consensual or otherwise) between a leader and a passenger are unacceptable. If you ever feel another person is behaving inappropriately please inform us immediately by contacting the emergency contact number detailed in these trip notes.

  • Emergency contact

While we always endeavour to provide the best possible holiday experience, due to the nature of travel and the areas we visit sometimes things can and do go wrong. Should any issue occur while you are on your trip, it is imperative that you discuss this with your group leader or our local representative straight away so that they can do their best to rectify the problem and save any potential negative impact on the rest of your trip.

We recognise that there may be times when your group leader/local partner may not be able to resolve a situation to your satisfaction - if this is the case, please ask the leader to speak to their direct manager.

You may also choose to provide details in your online feedback, which we ask you to complete within 30 days of the end of your trip. But we do ask you to be aware that it is very difficult for us to provide any practical help after the trip is complete.

In the case of a genuine crisis or emergency, Intrepid's Iceland Operations Team can be reached on the number listed below:

    PEAK Iceland: +354 865 9221

  • Accommodation notes

    GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS:
Family of two - All family groupings of two will be put into a twin room.

Family of three - Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that, in practice, a triple room will often simply be a twin room with a mattress on the floor or a further bed squashed in. Where it is impossible to provide a triple room, you will have to decide which of your party takes the single room.

Family of four or more - You will most likely stay in two twin rooms. If and wherever possible we will aim put you in a quadruple room. Whilst we will do our very best to ensure that families are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we can’t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over where you will be put. You need to come prepared for this.

  • Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

    SINGLE SUPPLEMENT:
A single supplement is available on this trip, please refer to your booking agent for further information.

  • Itinerary disclaimer

    ITINERARY CHANGES:
Our itineraries are updated regularly throughout the year based on customer feedback and to reflect the current situation in each destination. The information included in this Essential Trip Information may therefore differ from when you first booked your trip. It is important that you print and review a final copy prior to travel so that you have the latest updates. Due to weather, local conditions, transport schedules, public holidays or other factors, further changes may be necessary to your itinerary once in country. The order and timing of included activities in each location may also vary seasonally to ensure our travellers have the best experience. Your tour leader will keep you up to date with any changes once on tour.

    OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
A selection of optional activities that have been popular with past travellers are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isn't an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only for some of what might be available. Prices are approximate, are for entrance only, and don’t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability. It may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, so some pre-planning for what you are most interested in is advised. When it's recommended that travellers pre-book these activities, look for a note in the Special Information section of the day-to-day itinerary. For most, they can either be organised independently on the day, or let your leader know you are interested and they can assist.

Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. Although it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. Medium and high risk activities not listed above have not been assessed by us and as such our staff and leaders are unable to assist you with organising these activities. Activities that contravene our Responsible Travel policies are also not listed. Please remember that the decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion and risk.

How our Travel Expert Service Works
  • 1 We connect you with a hand-picked and qualified travel expert who can match your trip requirements. The advantage of working directly through a travel expert is that you get the best and unfiltered advice from the very beginning.
  • 2 The travel expert will help you with creating and customising a trip for you. If you have any questions or concerns relating to the trip, the travel expert will also be able to help you with those.
  • 3 When you feel that your trip is exactly per your wish, you'll be able to book the entire trip here on Bookmundi.
The Advantages of Bookmundi
  • Selected Local Travel Experts All our local travel experts have been chosen based on rigorous selection criteria. In fact, we reject 98 out of 100 local travel agencies, and thereby giving you access to the top 1-2% local travel experts.
  • Secure Online Payment and Financial Guarantee Each and every trip is required to go through Bookmundi's secure payment platform, powered by Stripe and supported by SSL. All payments are therefore carried out in secure manners. We are furthermore member of the Danish Travel Fund which gives you a 100% financial guarantee for any money you pay on Bookmundi, even if we went bankrupt (which we we will not!).
  • Trip Replacement or 100% Reimbursement Bookmundi has hand-picked your local travel expert. Our role, as your trusted third party, is therefore to make sure that your entire experience runs as seamless and secure as possible. We guarantee to you that in the unlikely event where a local travel expert cancels your trip after your deposit or full payment has been made, we commit to replacing these services with another equally qualified agency so that your trip can go ahead as planned, or failing to replace it, we will give you a 100% reimbursement.
