HIGHLIGHTS
  • Magical Sunrise and sunset views over snow capped mountains from Poon Hill
  • Explore rich culture, traditions and lifestyle of Gurung settlements
  • Short and easy trekking trip, suitable for most of the travelers
  • Trekking along beautiful rhododendron forests
This Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a popular, short and easy adventure at Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek can be experienced without much effort. The main destination, as well as the major highlight of this trek, is the Poon Hill Viewpoint located at 3210m above sea level that offers stunning views of Annapurna Himalayan range along with Machhapuchre and Dhaulagiri Himalayas.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek begins as we take a drive from the scenic lake city of Pokhara to the starting point of the trek at Nayapul. We will then hike towards Tikhedhunga, Ulleri and Ghorepani as we climb 3300 stone steps and cross the beautiful bamboo and rhododendron forests that blossom in spring. (March, April)

In this way, we finally hike up to Poonhill before sunrise to experience a magical sunrise view. Views of snow capped mountains from Poon Hill can’t be described in words when the warm rays of early sun gradually strike the Himalayan giants including Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Mt. Annapurna I (8,091m), Mt. Nilgiri (7,040m), Annapurna south (7219m), Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna III (7555m), Annapurna IV (7525m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Fishtail or Machhapuchhre (6,997m), Lamjung Himal (6,986m), Tukuche peak (6,920m), Dhampus peak (6,012m) among others.

After experiencing the best of sunrise views, Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek now gives us an insight into the local Gurung and Magar culture, tradition and lifestyle as we descend through culturally affluent and naturally blessed villages of Ghandruk and Birethanti.

Anyone with moderate level of fitness can join this trip without any risk of altitude sickness.

“I travelled alone in the 2nd week of October. Weather was pretty good (only showers in the evening) and sunrises in Poon Hill and Tadapani just amazing. It wasn't as cold as expected and could do without a sleeping bag.
The trek is great to get a taste of Nepal beyond the cities, offers lots of opportunities for protography, and can be done even by people with no head for heights (you don't have to be "schwindelfrei"). Deepak -my guide- was incredibly helpful, adjusting to my pace while keeping the tempo, helping all the time and even looking for "Shiva trees" to shoot. Thank you very much!

“Over our 2 week trip to Nepal the trek was definite the best part and we loved every part of it. From the moment of booking we had constant communication with Indhira. When we arrived in Kathmandu we met with Indhira and Hari to pick up our down jackets, sleeping bags and duffle bags where they gave us an overview of the trek.

Lok and Ajay who were are guide and porter were simply fantastic. Lok was very knowledgeable about the mountains and you can tell he is very experienced and feel his passion for showing people his country. He was always very thoughtful throughout the trek, checking everything was ok and ensuring we had the prime spots to sit and stay in the tea houses. We enjoyed it just being the two of us on the trek as we could go at our own pace. Lok was great at pacing us and never made us feel we were slowing them down.

We couldn't have asked for a better guide with Lok and porter with Ajay. We all had a good laugh together and were sad to say goodbye!!

I would definitely recommend Icicles adventures. They take care of you from booking to after your trek! They really are focussed on quality and definitely deliver. We plan to come back in 2020 to do another trek and will without a doubt be booking with Icicles and hopefully with Lok and Ajay!

Thanks for giving us the trip of a lifetime with such good memories!”

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about this tour.
  • How much money do I need to bring with me?

Your personal budget obviously depends on your spending habits and what is included in your trip cost. If accommodation is included, but meals are not, we would suggest that you bring around 30 USD per day per person for meals. Having a hot shower or charging your device sometimes costs extra. There are also sometimes small crafts/souvenirs to buy along the trekking route which you may want to bring extra money for. Also, consider whether you would be staying in Kathmandu or Pokhara before or after your trek.

  • How much should my backpack weigh?

A properly packed backpack (not including your day pack) should ideally not weigh more than 13 kg. It is also important to note that if you are taking a flight to the start of your trek, many smaller aircraft have weight restrictions. For example, if you are flying from Kathmandu to Lukla, you are only allowed 10kg of checked luggage, and 5 kg of hand baggage. Thus, in case of a small flight, you should ideally pack a 10 kg backpack for checked luggage, and then add 5 kg in your hand baggage. You can then re-shuffel the weigt once you start your trek at the trailhead.

  • Do I need a porter?

The decision to hire a porter is up to you and usually based on your fitness level and/or budget. One porter can be shared between two people and can carry up to 25 kg. Many trekkers hire a porter to have a more comfortable trek.

  • Do I require a porter for carrying water?

On most popular treks you can expect plenty of places where you can refill your water bottle, meaning you don’t need to carry a huge water supply with you. Bring an extra bottle of water if you are concerned. If you already have a porter, you can ask him/her to carry water as long as it is within the weight limit. Another option is to carry water purification tablets or LifeStraw, both of which can be found in Kathmandu.

  • When should I arrive in Kathmandu before the tour?

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start day of the trek because the tour operators usually require one working day to arrange trekking permits. Arrive earlier if you want to explore Kathmandu on your own or acclimate to any time differences.
