- Discover the cruel history of the notorious Khmer Rouge
- Pay your respects to those that died at Choueng Ek Memorial
- Listen to moving stories told by a local Cambodian guide
The first part of the tour is a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Previously a children’s high school, this building was seized by the Khmer Rouge in 1975. It soon became the regime’s largest centre of detention and torture in the country.
The museum is full of photographic displays of the prisoners. As you wander from image to image you will be confronted with the faces of those who died, and the dreadful conditions in which they were kept. It is a very sobering experience.
After leaving Tuol Sleng you will be guided to the Choueng Ek Memorial, where a Buddhist stupa containing around 8000 skulls marks the site of one of the notorious Killing Fields. Here you can take some time to pay tribute to the thousands of Cambodians that lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge.
Delving into Cambodia’s cruel history is a harrowing experience, but it is also essential for those that want a true understanding of this beautiful country and its resilient people.
