Southern Peru Trekking & Adventure with Unu Raymi
5 - Excellent
  • Anonymous
“I booked an 18 day trip with Unu Raymi in March 2022 and would recommend them wholeheartedly. My 18 day adventure around Southern Peru was fantastic - James and the Unu Raymi team were incredibly professional, organised and helpful. From the start of the process, James helped me curate a flexible tailor-made tour at a very reasonable and competitive price. Before the trip, the Unu Raymi team was in touch regularly to discuss and provide ideas for places to visit. During my visit to Peru, James was highly communicative, friendly and went to extra mile on numerous occasions and provided an exceptional service. I went on a number of hikes which were superb and very well organised. Overall, my tour with Unu Raymi was a stress-free once-in-a-lifetime experience and a perfect way to see one of the most beautiful countries. Book with Unu Raymi - you won’t regret it! My full itinerary included: Lima, Paracas > Huacachina > Ica > Nazca > Arequipa > Puno and Lake Titicaca > Cusco > the Sacred Valley > Llactapata Inca trail > Machu Picchu > Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain trek > Cusco back to Lima.”
The best Machu Picchu trek operator in Cusco -Alpaca Tours.
5 - Excellent
  • Joseph Cham
“I had a really great time trekking up the Inca Trail over 4 days and 3 nights starting Dec 29,2021 and summiting on Jan 1,2022. I am so glad I had decided to go with Alpaca Tours. They had everything organized to a T!! The food was great at each campsite and they even took care of my diabetic needs on the mountain!! To top it off, the chef even baked a cake for our group for New Year's eve!! The guides, Jaime and Adolfo were not only very pleasant to deal with but also very knowledgeable about the Trail and the related Inca history. Jaime was always pointing out to historical facts, trivia and several species of orchids and that made the arduous climb seem like a walk in the park. Adolfo was always around to help and demonstrated skillfully how the ancient Incas made sturdy ropes out of simple mountain grass! Overall, a fabulous experience with the Alpaca team and would recommend Jaime (pronounced "haimeh") and Adolfo to anyone that wants to do the Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu!”
The best tour company in Peru!
5 - Excellent
  • John Lew
“Alpaca expeditions was amazing from start to finish. The process was so smooth and well organised. The guides (Nilton and Adolfo) were the best guides I’ve had when travelling - they have so much knowledge on the Inca sites, trail, flora, fauna, and local area. They made us feel like family. As well as the guides, the porters (lead by Juan), and the chef (Mario) went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable, safe and happy. The food was excellent, especially being vegetarian, there were so many delicious options and snacks. The tents, sleeping bags and equipment is a high standard. I would 100% recommend Alpaca Expeditions - you will be very lucky if you get Nilton and Adolfo as guides!”

Peru - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Peru is as mysterious as its landmarks. It finds its way into most travel wish lists for one major reason – Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. They say that the moment you see Machu Picchu for the first time from that historic trail, you suddenly realize just how rewarding traveling can be, and tend to re-discover a long-lost part of your soul.

You might only know about Machu Picchu, but the fabled city is just the beginning. Peru was once home to a thriving pre-Columbian civilization that had dominated the region before the Spanish. The Incas were responsible for creating some of the most beautiful archaeological wonders, combining striking architecture with jaw-dropping natural beauty, making the country feel alluring and enchanting. Another adventure during your trip to Peru awaits at the Nazca lines, ancient markings that make you think twice about the existence of aliens.

Tour Highlights

  • Hike the Inca Trail, or its other famous alternative routes like the Lares Trek or Salkantey Trek.
  • Visit Machu Pichhu
  • Go sandboarding in the Peruvian desert
  • Look for macaws in the Amazon jungle
  • Explore the deep canyons of Colca
  • Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca
  • Trek the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes

Travel Tips

  • Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
  • Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
  • It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
  • Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.
  • On a holiday to Peru, don't skip a visit to Lima. Peru's largest city is often overlooked for hotspot tourist destinations but is full of great food and interesting museums that you'll regret missing out on.
  • Always carry cash when travelling through Peru as many shops will not accept credit cards.

Peru has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Peru before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers

  • What is the best month to visit Peru? Can I visit Peru during the off-season?

The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Find more information here.

  • Is Peru expensive to visit? How do the ATMs work?

Peru is not expensive for travelers and we recommend it as a top pick for visitors on a budget. Most travelers can get by on USD 30 to USD 40 per day, including transport, accommodation, and food. Tackling the Inca Trail and exploring Machu Picchu are must-do attractions but also relatively costly. ATMs are the quickest way to withdraw neuvos soles, as the country’s currency is called, on the road and visa cards are easily accepted. Many ATMs have an English language option, too. They can be found in some airports, inside banks, and as stand-alone units in major towns and cities. If you are looking for other destinations to visit on a budget, find more information here.

  • How many days do you need in Peru?

Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks. This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru, however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. For a more detailed rundown, check out our travel guide on how many days to spend in Peru.

  • Do they speak English in Peru?

Spanish is the most-spoken European language in Peru, alongside several local languages like Quechan and Aymara. Those involved in the tourism industry and those in popular destinations such as Lima and Cusco will speak some English, while guides leading tours for English-speaking travelers will have a good hold of the language. However, knowing a few words of Spanish is always useful.

  • What is considered rude in Peru? What cultural notions should I be aware of?

Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them.

  • What vaccinations do I need?

You should ensure you are up to date with any vaccinations that are standard in your home country, such as those providing protection against tetanus and measles. A medical professional may suggest boosters for these vaccinations. Other diseases they may suggest vaccinations for are hepatitis B, diphtheria, and rabies, all of which are potentially deadly. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a risk in the country’s east. There is a risk of malaria in the country’s northeast, around Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. Since there is currently no vaccination against this disease, prophylactic drugs are recommended. Find more information here.

  • Do I need to acclimatize before hiking Machu Pichu?

If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. If you plan on trekking, you can read our article on the ultimate trekking guide in Peru

  • How much is a typical meal in Peru?

A cheap meal at a street food stall can be had for a few US dollars, while a three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant will set you back by around USD 18. A cup of coffee or soft drinks costs only USD 1 in most places, while a bottle of local beer can be bought for slightly less than USD 2. Ceviche (marinated raw fish) is a common dish on Peru’s Pacific coast, while slow-cooked beef and shredded chicken served in a creamy sauce (aji de gallina) are also equally popular. For something a little more unusual, try cuy, a local delicacy prepared with guinea pigs. Read our article on the best Peruvian foods.
