Planning of our safari was done by email, and we received good and detailed information. We made a few changes and booked a little extra, so a number of mails went back and forth. Every time we received a reply within a day or two. Payment was handled online without any kind of problem.
We were met by our driver/guide Peter at the airport, and he took good care of us during the entire safari, until we were back in Nairobi. Peter is an excellent driver and has been in the business for many years. He even helped with a little "white lie" - since I had booked a balloon flight in Masai Mara, that was to be a surprise for my wife. With Peters help it was kept a secret, until we were parked in front of the balloon basket.
On the first day in Kenya, we had chosen to have a day in Nairobi, with visits to Giraffe Center, Sheldricks Elephant Orphanage and Karen Blixen Museum. This was a great start, and it also left time for some relaxation after the flight.
The safari itself was fantastic - the places we visited on the "Samburu Five and Big Five Safari", and the order in which they were visited, is a great experience in our opinion. We saw such different kinds of landscape and the specific animals living there. And of course we saw both the Samburu Five and the Big Five - and apart from seeing them during daytime, we also saw all of the Big Five on one single night game drive (in Ol Pejeta)!! Certainly, the Masai Mara is special, and something you must see - but we wouldn't miss Samburu for anything! In fact, all of the places we went (Aberdare, Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Naivasha and Masai Mara), had their own special values.
The camps/lodges, we stayed at, were all great. And it was like every time we moved to a new place, it added something more to the experience. And ending up at Sarova Camp in Masai Mara was perfect! The tents were fantastic and the food was fabulous!

From there we went on to the breathtakingly arid terrains of Samburu, dotted with watering holes densely packed with all manner of wildlife. It was fascinating to see how much the habitat can impact upon the same species; the lions in Samburu gaunt and with patchy manes compared with the majestic fully-maned lions of Ol Pejeta.
It was in this Conservancy that we saw countless rhinos, including both White and Black Rhino calves, and the unbelievably rare Northern White Rhino. The long journey from Ol Pejeta to The Maasai Mara was conveniently broken up with an enjoyable boat safari and night spend on Lake Naivasha - perfect for keen bird photographers!
It was the final days of the safari which will go down as a truly unforgettable experience. We chose to spend our nights in the Mara ecosystem in The Naibosho Conservancy, an area that has the same density of wildlife as the crater in Ngorongoro Conservation Area in nearby Tanzania. As someone who works in community-based conservation in East Africa, it was inspiring to see how well integrated community, conservation and tourism - often at loggerheads with each other - are at Naibosho. The guides and staff have so much traditional ecological knowledge - be it medicinal uses of plants or identifying the age and gender of a lion from the sound it makes - from having grown up with the sounds and smells of the bush. Eagle View camp where we stayed was a place like nowhere else I've been (or will ever go, unless returning there of course!). The views from the camp overlooking a large watering hole are breathtaking (you can see where it gets the name Eagle View from!). Being a small campsite, there was a very intimate atmosphere with evenings spent around the campfire sharing stories and experiences with staff and guests alike. Not to mention their flexibility in catering to my vegetarian dietary requirements - unheard of in Maasai culture!
As the name of the trip suggests, our trip was indeed one epic safari! I can't recommend this itinerary any more. If you're keen to see a real range of species and habitats and learn first-hand indigenous knowledge from the communities that live in and around the ecosystem then this trip will tick all of those boxes!”
