“In my mind the trip was in 2 segments. The Yangon part at the beginning. We arrived two days before the tour which was great for us to become accustomed to....well, everything really! Yangon had a lot to offer culturally and our guide Omar was very informative and efficient. The second phase was like another Myanmar world. The riding, the villages and the smiling people, the countryside and the history. The locals all stopped to stare but we felt as though we were part of it all as we viewed from our handlebars, smelled, listened and said the obligatory 'mingalar par'. Our guide Linn was outstanding. Wise beyond his 26 years having previously been a monk, been to university and worked as a chef. He was very engaging and absolutely committed to educating us but he was also able to have fun and share a joke.I left Myanmar fulfilled that I had tasted a little of the real place.”

“Thank you for providing a well organised, active, culturally eye opening tour around Myanmar. The people were friendly and the scenery varied and spectacular. I haven't been fed this well since... my last World Expeditions trip! The most memorable part was climbing an ancient pagoda to watch the sun set slowly over hundreds of ancient temples Old Bagan. The view from Mt. Popa over the stunning Taung Kalat was a very close second!”

“The trip itself was great though and the guides and service provided were excellent. The tour was well paced and as it was just me and my husband we could be flexible about what we wanted to see or not see. The guides were all extremely professional, very knowledgeable about the country's history and culture. We like to eat in local restaurants and the guides were more than happy to change from the set restaurants chosen to take us to local gems. I don't know that I would call it an adventure as such as it is a lot of sightseeing. There is a short bike ride in Bagan. A 4 hour trek through beautiful countryside in Kalaw (we never saw another foreigner the whole time), with a homestay in a small village - this was excellent and well worth doing. Trek back to Kalaw. There was an option to cycle to Inle, but as cycling is not really my thing we were given the option to walk to some other sights on the way to Inle. Apart from walking around temples that was the only energetic part of the trip. The inclusion of meals in local houses is good though as you really get to experience the culture and the food was always excellent. We also added in the balloon trip in Bagan, which although expensive, was well worth it. Truly beautiful. The trip is quite full on as they try to cram a lot into 12 days, but it gives you a real flavour of the place and you can always come back and see other parts at your own pace. Apart from some dinners, which we liked to eat in local restaurants anyway, all meals were included, as were entry fees and internal flights. I thought it was good value.”

Myanmar - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is an incredible melting pot of cultures. Bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand, the country is home to more than 100 ethnic groups. While the country was ruled by an oppressive military group until 2011, Myanmar is gradually on its way towards democracy. Heavily influenced by Buddhism, a trip to Myanmar will open you to spiritual atmosphere, whether you’re visiting its traditional temples or its serene beaches.

    Tour Highlights

    • Trace the intricate wood carvings of the Shwenandaw Monastery
    • Stare in awe at the golden peak of the Shwedagon Pagoda
    • Cross the U Bein Bridge across Taungthaman Lake, the longest teak bridge in the world
    • Experience the sunrise over the Temples of Bagan
    • Hike the volcano Mount Popa for incredible views
    • Count the hundreds of shrines at the Sandamuni Pagoda in Mandalay

    Travel Tips

    • If visiting a market near a temple, you'll probably come across a vendor selling caged birds. These aren't pets but are rather meant to be bought and set free by worshipers so they can earn good karma.
    • WiFi can be found in Myanmar, but it's often very, very slow. Book as much of your travel and accommodation online as possible before your trip to avoid having to use the internet while in the country.
    • Cash is key. The majority of shops and restaurants in Myanmar do not accept card payment. Bring both U.S. dollars and kyats with you: U.S. dollars for large transactions (hotel bills, transportation tickets, etc.) and kyats for smaller, everyday purchases.
    • As the country continues to develop, its tourism infrastructure is trying to catch up with the influx of tourists. Book as much as you can in advance for a tour in Myanmar, as many areas of the country do not have adequate hotels and easy transportation.
    • Men, get ready to shake up your wardrobe. The longyi is a wraparound skirt worn by both men and women in Myanmar. Visitors are encouraged to wear them as well!

Myanmar has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Myanmar before planning your tour.
