The Machame Route up the famed Kilmanjaro, also known as “the Whiskey Route", offers a wide variety of views, landscapes, and experiences. Located on the southern slope of Mt Kilimanjaro, Machame Gate will lead you to the top of Kilimanjaro along the exciting footpath which starts in a tropical forest, then runs through all the climate zones and finishes with the Arctic desert in the summit area. This Machame option is highly recommended for those seeking good acclimatization. Success rates of this route are about 94-95%.

The starting point of the route, Machame Gate, is only a 20-minute drive from Aishi Machame Hotel, where you will stay before and after the trek. Camps along the trek are favorably located for a smooth and gradual acclimatization transition process. On the 3rd day, Machame Route converges with Lemosho and Umbwe routes at Barranco camp.

Denise's review for another Altezza Travel tour
“The route was perfect for acclimatisation with a gentle start and then the exciting rock scramble up the Barranco wall. The final ascent from base camp at night was very tough but from Stella point onwards to Uhuru peak was spel binding with glaciers all around”

Michael's review for another Altezza Travel tour
“Altezza was exceptionally professional and customer focused from start to finish. Our guide and driver Stephan was taking very good care of us, showing us the best spots, communicating with rangers and other guides to make every safari successful. We had a lot to see and do in our 8 days tour and now in retrospect we are glad for every minute.I can certainly recommend Altezza as safari tour operator. I would definitely book with them again if I get the opportunity to go back to Tanzania.Thank you so much, Altezza.”

Scott's review for another Altezza Travel tour
“We had a phenomenal experience with Altezza climbing the Mahcame Route (7 days). The guides were highly professional; every day they conducted a medical check to make sure we were all feeling alright, and helped ensure that we were taking care of ourselves properly. They fed us well, and provided all sorts of interesting facts and motivation to help get all of us up the mountain. In our group of 10, all of us made it to the summit! Our guides were also all Tanzanian/locals, which was great. Some other companies use Americans to lead their trips, which seemed unnecessary. The locals knew the mountain better, were fantastic ambassadors for their country, and in general just fun. I would highly recommend Altezza for anyone looking for climb Kili!! For what it's worth, we purchased the trip through the website The Clymb and were able to get a somewhat substantial discount that way. Might be worth exploring.”

Other Practical InformationWe recommend this program for novices and amateurs. Participants need not have climbed before but good overall health and physical condition are recommended. During the trek, and to prevent altitude sickness, we recommend you abstain from consuming alcohol and caffeine, drink over 4 liters of bottled water daily (little by little, frequently), take a Diamox pill to help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Most mountain climbers take Diamox in the morning, before they start their ascent, in order to reduce discomfort associated with altitude sickness. We recommend you consult your doctor prior to the trip in case of potential allergies. At night you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization to the high altitude: because of a reduction in your waking breathing pattern, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Taking altitude into account, you may therefore start feeling sick and have a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness. Tips are not included in the trip. We recommend 200–250 USD per participant to the entire climbing team.
