  • Famously known as the 'Coca Cola' route
  • Experience the sunrise from the roof of Africa
  • Sleep in dormitory style huts
The Marangu route, famously known as the "Coca-Cola" route as you can get a bottle of Coca-Cola at each hut, is the original route established to climb Kilimanjaro. The Marangu route is often billed as one of the easier walking routes, however, according to KINAPA it suffers from the lowest success rate (42%) as too many climbers try to do it in only 5 days and fail because of poor acclimatisation. We've built in an extra day's acclimatisation for you, greatly improving the success rate.

Approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast, the Marangu route uses the same ascent and descent route which means it is less scenic than the other routes. For climbers who do not wish to camp, then Marangu is the only route that offers dormitory-style hut accommodation. The huts have a communal dining room, simple washrooms and toilets which lower down will be flushable, but as you move higher up the mountain will be "long drop" loos.

Although some climbers like the idea of staying in the huts rather than camping, you need to remember that on the Marangu route you will be sharing the hut with lots of other climbers in open dormitory accommodation. Bring ear plugs just in case!
Day 1 Day 1: Arrive in Kilimanjaro, transfer to hotel 3 Star Hotel

You will arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport. A Kandoo driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in Moshi.

Day 2 Day 2: From Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut 3-4 hours Sleeping huts

After breakfast we will collect you from your hotel for the transfer to Marangu Gate for registration. Our porters prepare and pack our supplies and luggage before we start our ascent on a cleared ridge trail through the rainforest. The forest, covered with mist and dripping with beards of moss, is also where most of Kilimanjaro's animals are found. We will spend our first night at Mandara Hut, a group of wooden A-framed huts set in a forest clearing. Water is piped into the camp from springs above and there are flush toilets behind the main hut.

Elevation: From 1800 metres to 2700 metres
Trekking distance: 7 kilometres
Trek time: Around 3 hours
Environment: Montane forest

Day 3 Day 3: From Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut 5-6 hours Sleeping huts

From Mandara Hut the trail passes through a short stretch of forest, skirting the base of the Maundi Crater, emerging into the transition zone from rain forest to moorland. After about 6 hours we arrive at Horombo Hut.

Elevation: From 2700 metres to 3720 metres
Trekking distance: 12 kilometres
Trek time: 5-6 hours
Environment: Moorland

Day 4 Day 4: Acclimatisation Day at Horombo Hut 4-5 hours Sleeping huts

This extra day and night at Horombo is ideal for good acclimatisation. A hike towards Mawenzi, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down) is strongly recommended as it will further assist with acclimatisation.

Elevation: 3720m
Environment: Alpine desert

Day 5 Day 5: From Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut 5-6 hours Sleeping huts

We continue our ascent into the Alpine desert zone, passing the last place where water is available at 4130m. From Kibo Hut, the summit is now a further 1195m of ascent. We will make our summit ascent tonight so we will go to go to bed early to get as much rest as possible.

Elevation: From 3720 metres to 4700 metres
Trekking distance: 9.5 kilometres
Trek time: 5-6 hours
Environment: Alpine desert

Day 6 Day 6: From Kibo Hut to summit at Uhuru Peak, descent t 11-13 hours

We will wake up around 23:30 hours, and after some tea and biscuits we shuffle off into the night, and this is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer point (5250m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gilman's Point (5681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort.

From Gilman's Point we will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long we will be able to spend taking photographs before the 3 hours descent back to Kibo Hut. After a short rest we gather all the gear we left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo Hut, a further 3 hours. Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Elevation: From 4700 metres to 3720 metres
Highest point: 5895 metres (Uhuru Peak)
Trekking distance: 22 kilometres (6 kilometres ascent / 16 kilometres descent)
Trek time: 11-13 hours (6-7 hours ascent / 5-6 hours descent)
Environment: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

Day 7 Day 7: Descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate 5-6 hours Sleeping huts

Our final day on the trek, departing after breakfast we descend a further 1740m to Marangu Gate to pick up your summit certificates from the Park Headquarters. Transfer to your hotel for a well-earned shower and celebration.

Elevation: From 3720 metres to 1980 metres
Trekking distance: 18 kilometres
Trek time: 5-6 hours
Environment: Montane forest

“What can I say. This was the most amazing trip of my lifetime. Everything about it was truly exceptional. From the pre-trip organisation and advice, to the safety and care from the whole team in Moshi. The team of guides led admirably by August were amazing. Safety always came first but their support and determination to get everyone to the top and back again was astounding. The quality of the food from Paul the chef was excellent and ensured we all had the right diet to provide the energy needed. Particular mention should also made of the large support team of porters, cooks, tent erectors, and even the toilet attendant. Without all of this, ascending Kilimanjaro would not have been possible.

Thank you so much. You were all amazing!

“The whole experience was simply amazing from start to finish! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would like to give a big shout out to the 3 guides Abraham, Deus and Amadeus, as well as the cook and the 24 porters... it was completely down to their combined hard work, boundless enthusiasm, and expert planning that all 7 of our group managed to summit without a problem!

The food was excellent; very nutritious and plentiful in supply, and they catered well for my vegetarian diet. The celebratory cake made for us after summiting was a very nice touch, as was the very refreshing glass of juice waiting for us as soon as we came down to Barafu!

The tents were of high quality, and the strong winds roaring at Barafu did test this feature out, but thankfully the tents withheld with no problem and provided a great protection against the elements.

All in all the whole experience was truly excellent and very memorable, both thanks to the local onsite team in Tanzania, and through the support and useful info provided by the team in the UK.

Personal highlight for me was definitely the local songs on the last day at Mweka Camp; there was a strong energy and passion behind them at this point and it was great for us to share that special moment with the full expedition team!”
Fantastic experience in Kilimanjaro

“I had a great experience with Kandoo. Before the trek any question and email was answered quickly. During the trek we felt that anything we needed or wanted could be taken care of. The team made us feel that they were there for us at any time. Form the porters to the cook and of course the guides. The phrase "Don't be shy, ask anything you want, we are here for you" was the one I heard most, and always with a smile.
I felt lucky to have had August as my lead guide. He is very knowledgeable about the nature and history of the area and could answer any question regarding anything. I felt very safe climbing with him. He seemed to know at all times where exactly each of us was and what was our condition. You could see him paying attention to everything all the time and that made me feel very relaxed and taken care of.
All in all, August and his team did a great job! Thanks!!!”

“Kandoo Adventures provide an excellent service from the start. Communications with the UK team were timely and informative. The trip was well organised and the guides, porters were fantastic. Abraham and his team made everyone feel safe, comfortable and continued to keep up everyone's spirits when tired!. Abraham ensured the whole team were fit and well with daily health checks - what a fantastic guide!

The food provided was excellent (thank you Mr Delicious). I will definitely be using Kandoo Adventures again for my next trip.”
