The Bahamas Sailing Adventure tour starts and ends in Marsh Harbour. The Bahamas Sailing Adventure is a Sailing, Yachting And Motor Boating tour that takes 7 days taking you from Marsh Harbour, Bahamas and through other destinations in North America.

Set sail on this once in a lifetime sailing expedition to one of the world’s best cruising destinations, the Caribbean. You’ll experience abundant marine life, crystal clear turquoise waters, uninhabited cays and one of the best sailing destinations in the world. The protected and shallow waters of the Bahamas make this the perfect trip for first time or novice sailors.
Welcome to paradise! White beaches, blue skies and even bluer water is what you have to look forward to for the next week. Oh, and maybe a little fishing, snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding and hoisting the sails.

The Bahamas [along with the Turks & Caicos] form the Lucayan Archipelago which covers an area in excess of 14,000 km and over 29 islands, 660 cays and nearly 2,400 islets making the Bahamas a true sailor’s paradise. The archipelago was named after the first known inhabitants the Lucayans, an indigenous people who were the first Americans to come into contact with Christopher Columbus. The most western reach of the Bahamas is Bimini which is 80 km from Florida while Cay Sal Bank is only 50 km from the coast of Cuba, making it closer to Cuba than its nearest Bahamian island neighbour.

Our trip starts in Marsh Harbour, the main town on the Abaco Islands. The Abacos chain is formed in a boomerang shape and stretches nearly 210 kms from Walkers Cay in the north, to Hole-in-the-Wall in the south. Abaco is the second largest island in the Bahamas and Marsh Harbour, our starting point, is the 8th largest town in the Bahamas with a population of 5,300. Marsh Harbour has all the available services required to provision yachts as well as post offices, supermarkets and banks [please refer to Money Matters for information on ATM’s and credit cards].

The outer cays and islands of the Abacos create naturally protected waters commonly referred to as the Sea of Abaco. The temperatures in the island chain are generally cooler than the other islands with summer temperatures average 26.5°C to 29.4°C.

Your group will meet at the Marina at 3pm for a group meeting which includes a detailed safety briefing and an introduction to your home for the next week, S/V Abel.. The first port of call after the briefing is the local supermarket to buy supplies for your trip. For the ease of group meals prepared on board [breakfast, snacks and at least one lunch or dinner] we recommend travellers contribute to a kitty. For more information see Money Matters. If you have any special dietary requirements, please make sure you notify us at the time of booking so we can accommodate your requests.

After the formalities over the skipper will take you on an orientation walk of Marsh Harbour before settling down to watch your first Bahamian sunset. Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant.
After an early breakfast we'll set sail. Please note The beauty of sailing is that each day is unique and, while we have a destination to reach, if the weather changes or something takes the group’s fancy, we are flexible on the day's itinerary. The itinerary is subject to change and may vary depending on weather and berth availability. Your skipper will make the final call to ensure your safety at all times.

ELBOW CAY

Tahiti Beach
Framed by a grove of coconut palms, Tahiti Beach is a white sand beach on the the southern tip of Elbow Cay. Because catamarans have a shallow draft you are able to step off the boat and wade through crystal blue waters onto Tahiti Beach. This is the perfect first stop on our sailing adventure, you can choose from a quiet stroll along the palm fringed shore, a dip in the crystal-blue waters, a paddle, or you might want to don a snorkel and mask and try to spot a sea turtle.
The picturesque Hope Town Lighthouse is visible from the beach.

Hope Town
Hope Town, or Great Harbour as it was formally known, is a small colonial township and is most famous for it's candy stripe lighthouse. Many of the buildings that you will see in Hope Town and the lighthouse are fine examples of Loyalist architecture. The 'Loyalists' were American colonists who were loyal to the British flag who fled their newly independent nation and settled in Hope Town.
There are a number of food markets, boutiques, museums and restaurants located around the harbour and there is great snorkelling directly off the beach.

Elbow Cay Lighthouse
The British Imperial Lighthouse Service built this lighthouse to mark the Elbow Cay Reef during the 1860’s. Hope Towner’s at the time resented this and opposed the project as they saw it as a direct threat to their salvage business. Despite their efforts the lighthouse at Hope Town
went into operation in 1863. It is one of the only two remaining beacons saved from automation, a process vigorously opposed by residents. Extraordinary efforts are undertaken by the local residents to
secure spare parts for the light apparatus most of which are no longer manufactured.

MAN-O-WAR CAY

Man-O-War settlement is small, peaceful and well- kept town; its clean, narrow streets are used by pedestrians, motorbikes and golf-carts. The houses are mostly wooden and are painted in a variety of
pastel colors. It is also a disciplined community in that no alcoholic beverages are sold on the cay and local grocers were encouraged to cease the sale of tobacco products.

GREAT GUANA CAY

Set with a back drop of a beautiful Atlantic long white beach Great Guana Cay is that perfect spot for those iconic white sand beach shots that grace the pages of glossy travel magazines. Great Guana is surrounded by coral reefs and it is also home to many migrating birds and species endemic to the Abacos. Loggerhead, Green and Hawksbill turtles nest on the islands.

NONAME CAY

Although there is no formal settlement on Noname Cay we may not be alone when we visit as the cay is home to pigs, swimming pigs to be in fact. Left behind by the original settlers or having made their own way from shipwrecks or other islands, the once feral pigs have made their home at Noname Cay.

GREEN TURTLE CAY

Green Turtle Cay is home to the settlement of New Plymouth. With typical Bahamian architecture, you can walk from one end of town to the other in less than 15 minutes. Known for its pristine white beaches and crystal clear waters it's the perfect spot for kayaking and snorkelling.

TREASURE CAY

Whenever there is a list of the 'Top beaches in the world' Treasure Cay usually gets a mention. The sand is incredible, soft, fine and white. The water, clear, all shades of blue and full of marine life. For these reasons there are a number of high end resorts and hotels on the islet.
After a delicious breakfast and maybe one last swim, snorkel or paddle, we head back to Marsh Harbour where, sadly, our Bahamas sailing adventure comes to an end at about 10am. If you are flying out today, we recommend not to book a flight prior to 12 noon.

We don't ask travellers to complete a physical participation form for this trip however we do ask you read through the trip notes carefully to ensure that this trip is the right trip for you. This applies to the included activities and moving around the boat. The cabins and communal areas of the boat are spread over 2 decks. The steps between the decks are steep

  • Joining point instructions

International flights from main cities in Europe are available daily with a stopover in Nassau. Direct flights to Marsh Harbour are available from United States (Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach). Between the airport and the meeting point, it is a 10 minute taxi ride. Snappas Restaurant is located a 1 minute walk across the road from Harbour View Marina, Marsh Harbour.

  • Group leader

On your Bahamas sailing trip you will be accompanied by a skipper. Your skipper's role involves taking charge of the sailing, organising the overall operation and smooth-running of the trip, managing trip logistics, safety of the vessel and safety for all passengers on board. All skippers have extensive sailing miles experience and hold a 'yacht master offshore license' or higher. They have been carefully selected and undergone Intrepid Leader training as well as having extensive knowledge on the routes they sail. While not being leaders in the traditional sense you can expect your skipper to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects.

  • Communications

Please note that our sailing boats do not have Wi-Fi. You will be getting off the boat and visiting towns regularly so you will be able to connect with the outside world then.

  • Visas

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

    BAHAMAS:
To enter the Bahamas, you must have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of departure. All visitors require a return or onward ticket. If you have additional time at the beginning of the trip a confirmed hotel booking (or letter of invitation if staying at a private address) and proof of funds to sustain their trip must also be presented.

Australians, British, Canadian, American and other EU countries do not require a visa to enter the Bahamas.

  • Is this trip right for you

As the majority of this trip takes place on a sailing boat, you’ll need to feel comfortable with moving about the vessel, including the use of stairs. With that said, sea legs come naturally to some but not so much for others. Your friendly crew will be able to help with the effects of sea sickness if needed.

A zodiac is used to transport passengers from the boat to the mainland, with landings taking place at piers (dry landings) as well as on beaches (wet landings). Zodiacs can sometimes be awkward to climb in and out of, but a sense of humour and can-do attitude is all you need.

This is an adventure on board a real yacht, which means living spaces, cabins, bathrooms and showers need to be shared with other passengers. Sleeping quarters can be quite compact, but you will be spending the majority of your time above board in the open air.

Time on the water also means time in the sun. Remember to pack sun protection, such as sun screen and a hat, and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. See ‘Essential Trip Information’ below for a full packing list.

Please note that smooth sailing is dependent on the weather, so itinerary changes may occur at the last minute if the weather becomes unfavourable. If any changes are made, you can trust in your knowledgeable skipper to choose an alternative route or activity.

Due to the size of the yachts, sound carries easily from one side to the other and can wake your fellow travellers. Please keep this in mind if you’re planning to have a late night.

  • Health

All Intrepid travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to cope with our style of travel. Please note that if, in the opinion of our group leader or local guide, any traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, Intrepid reserves the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.
You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations and anti-malarial requirements before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements (including a spare pair of glasses) as they may not easily be obtained at the locations on this trip. For legal reasons our leaders and guides are prohibited from administering any type of drugs including headache tablets and antibiotics. Please ensure that you are adequately prepared.

    SUNSCREEN
It's important to bring a high SPF [sun protection factor] sunscreen and apply it regularly. As wind will also be a factor on a sailing trip we recommend bringing a lip balm that also has a high SPF rating.

    SUNGLASSES
As you will be spending most of your time outdoors and in the sunlight we high recommend bringing a good pair of sunglasses. Polarised sunglasses are your best bet.

    MEDICATIONS
Please ensure you travel with all required medicines, pain killers and toiletries that you may need while in on this sailing trip. You are travelling to quite a remote destination and will not have immediate access to pharmacies and even then they not stock your required medication.

    CONTACT LENSES/GLASSES
Water and wind are not great friends for those that wear contact lenses. Please ensure you bring a spare pair, solution or eye drops to cope with dry eye and a spare pair of glasses.

    SEA SICKNESS
Our solution for sea sickness is to rest up, get heaps of fresh air and where possible try to keep your eye on the horizon however we know this doesn't always work. If you are prone to sea sickness we suggest you bring options to try an avoid this - whether it be sea sickness tablets, wrist bands, ginger or other herbal remedies.

  • Food and dietary requirements

    SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
If you have any special dietary requirements or food allergies you must advise us at the time of booking. We will endeavour to accommodate all requests but please note that as we have limited refrigeration and storage space on board the yachts and for the most part of the trip we will not have easy access to shops or supermarkets.

Vegans, coeliacs or those with specific meal requirements might choose to supplement meals with supplies bought from home, e.g. protein bars, dried fruits and so on.

PLEASE NOTE: We are travelling in a remote region that does not have the convenience of shops or supermarkets. With limited space and refrigeration on on board most of our meals will be supplemented by fish caught or traded with local fisherman.

To make the most of the food that is available in the Bahamas, we’ve structured our meal arrangements to provide both flexibility and variety.

For most dinners and some lunches we will moored in a port or marina near meaning that the group will have a choice of on-land eating options available. We find our group often eat together however you have the freedom to go off and do your own thing. Our skippers can recommend options for restaurants and on many occasions will dine with the group.

While your skipper will co-ordinate the shopping for and preparation of these meals we’ve found that the best trips are those where everyone pitches in together to help with the meal preparation.

  • Money matters

    SPENDING MONEY
When it comes to spending money on the trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget a sensible amount for things like meals not included, drinks, shopping, optional activities and laundry. It's always better to bring a little more than you think you'll need. Also make sure you've read your trip details thoroughly so you know what's included in the trip price and what isn't. This should make budgeting a little easier. You'll find this info in the Inclusions section of your Essential Trip Information (that's this document).

Once on board the yacht there is very little to spend your money on so there is no need to bring huge amounts of cash with you however ensure you have enough cash to buy souvenirs, alcoholic drinks and for tips.

    BAHAMAS
The official currency of the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar, $BSD. The value of the BSD is comparable to the USD.
The most convenient and easiest way to get cash is from an ATM [Automated Teller Machine]. There are fees accessing your account overseas so please check with your bank as to what these fees are and it might also be worth checking if there is a daily limit for withdrawals – many banks do limit the amount of funds you can withdrawal overseas to protect you from theft.
As many of the outlying islands do not have ATM’s you may want to withdrawal enough money on day 1 to get you through the trip
    .
If you are using a debit or credit card please ensure you have a PIN number as many establishments [worldwide] have done away with the signatures and purchases can be made by entering a PIN number.

**Please ensure that you notify your bank prior to your departure to advise you will be travelling overseas and using your debit or credit card**

    TRIP KITTY:
On this trip it's recommend that you contribute to a kitty of BSD60 per person
approx AUD83/NZD90/GBP48/EUR52//CHF60/CAD79/USD60/ZAR865 per person. The kitty is an on-ground payment put into a central fund managed by travellers. It helps fund for breakfast and lunch on the boat and other small items such as ice, water, snacks and drinks. Travellers are responsible for the preparation of these meals onboard and to shop at port where supermarkets are often very close to the mooring. Kitty amounts are subject to change to reflect local price increases. On day 1, the skipper will talk through the kitty and how it will be managed (by yourself or fellow travellers) The kitty will be collected when you arrive at the welcome meeting or in stages throughout your trip.

    TIPPING
If you're happy with the services provided, a tip - though not compulsory - is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it's of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid destinations. The following amounts are based on local considerations and feedback from our past travellers:
Restaurants: the suggested amount is 15-20% of your bill. .
Skipper: We suggest US8-10 per person, per day for your Skipper.
Crew: We recommend  US5 - 7 per person, per day for your Cook.
Of course you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service

    CONTINGENCY FUNDS:
We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. Please make sure you have access to an extra US$500 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures). Sometimes these things necessitate last minute changes to enable our trips to continue to run, and as a result there may be some extra costs involved.

  • A couple of rules

Everyone has the right to feel safe when they travel. We don’t tolerate any form of violence (verbal or physical) or sexual harassment, either between customers or involving our leaders, partners or local people. Sexual relationships between a tour leader and a customer are strictly forbidden.

Use or possession of illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. If you choose to consume alcohol while travelling, we encourage responsible drinking, and expect that you’ll abide by the local laws regarding alcohol consumption.

The sex tourism industry is known to exploit vulnerable people and have negative consequences on communities, including undermining the development of sustainable tourism. For this reason, patronising sex workers will not be tolerated on our trips.

By travelling with us you are agreeing to adhere to these rules. Your group leader has the right to remove any member of the group for breaking any of these rules, with no right of refund.

If you feel that someone is behaving inappropriately while travelling with us, please inform your tour leader or local guide immediately. Alternatively, contact us on the emergency contact number detailed in the Problems and Emergency Contact section of this Essential Trip Information.

Your skipper is very capable with years of experience at the helm, so it goes without saying that when he directs you to do something or asks you not to do something you take notice and heed his request. All decisions made by the skipper are made with the safety of his passengers and crew in mind.

    CLIFF JUMPING
We do not allow cliff jumping on our tours as it is a dangerous activity and against Intrepid policy.

    WATER SPORTS
Kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are available for use. If you are not a confident swimmer we highly recommend that you use one of life jackets available on board.

Other water sports are available as optional activities. As we have not personally risk assessed these activities your skipper cannot recommend one operator over another.
If you partake in an optional activity please ensure you have the correct insurance cover for that activity (this includes hiring a moped or motorbike - with most insurance policies you need to pay an excess to be covered for these activities)

  • Responsible travel

Travelling responsibly is all about making good choices. It's about ensuring you have an incredible trip while also having a positive impact on the local environment, community and economy you're travelling in . How can you be a Responsible Traveller? See our tips below:

    * Choose to travel with a responsible travel company like us! We've already offset the main carbon emissions of your trip, so your footprint is already lighter.
    * Consider offsetting your flights too.
    * Bring a refillable water bottle and some water purification tablets (or a Steripen) to cut down on plastic bottle waste.
    * Be an animal-friendly traveller. Only go to venues that respect animals by allowing them to live normally in their natural environment. Steer clear of venues that use animals for entertainment or abnormal activities and/or keep animals in poor and unnatural conditions.
    * Eat at local restaurants, buy from regional artists and support social enterprises so you can contribute directly to locals and their economy.
    * Always be respectful of local customs and ask permission if you want to take a photo of someone.
    * Learn a few words of the local language and engage with the people around you.
    * Carry a cloth or re-usable bag so you can avoid plastic bags.
    * Give back by making a donation to a local project via The Intrepid Foundation.

Share your thoughts with us by completing your feedback form after your trip. This helps us to continue to improve our commitment to responsible travel.

  • Accommodation notes

This trip is accommodated on board a catamaran yacht, the S/V Abel. For our Bahamas trip the catamaran is equipped with 4 twin-share cabins and 4 shared bathrooms. The average size of the boat is 40-45 feet. Fresh water is available for showers, and toilets are either electronic or the hand pump variety. The boat is equipped with a motor for times when the wind is not sufficient for sailing. Our boats are real yachts and this is a real sailing trip. Yachts are designed to keep sleeping areas to the absolute minimum of space, while maximising common areas as much as possible.
The skipper will allocate the rooms on arrival to the boat and single travellers will be paired up with another passenger of the same sex, this may mean sharing a double mattress. The skipper will also be sharing the yacht's facilities and sleeping quarters.
While some may find the living quarters quite close, those who are looking to revel in the adventure and exhilaration of an authentic sailing trip usually find any discomfort is more than made up for by the spirit of this sailing experience.

  • Transport notes

  • Your fellow travellers

The bonus of our sailing adventures are that they are small groups, a maximum of 8 travellers (with the average number of travellers 6). However when you add in a Skipper and a cook and the fact you will be eating, sleeping and lounging about together for up to a week in the confines of a catamaran you may need to call on some patience, maybe some headphones but above all a sense of humour.
Most travellers come away from our sailing adventures saying it was a the trip of a lifetime and that they have made lifelong friends..............we're sure you will too!

If you wish to have a single cabin on our sailing trips, please advise at the time of booking. You will be required to pay double to guarantee a cabin to yourself.

    PARTICIPATION:
You don't need to hold a recreational skippers ticket or any sailing experience at all to join this trip however you may be called on to help around the boat, help keep the bathrooms and galley clean by emptying the bins and overall keeping the communal areas free and available for your fellow travellers. You will also be asked to chip in at meal time, either helping with food preparation, cooking, setting or clearing the table and washing up dishes.

How our Travel Expert Service Works
  • 1 We connect you with a hand-picked and qualified travel expert who can match your trip requirements. The advantage of working directly through a travel expert is that you get the best and unfiltered advice from the very beginning.
  • 2 The travel expert will help you with creating and customising a trip for you. If you have any questions or concerns relating to the trip, the travel expert will also be able to help you with those.
  • 3 When you feel that your trip is exactly per your wish, you'll be able to book the entire trip here on Bookmundi.
The Advantages of Bookmundi
  • Selected Local Travel Experts All our local travel experts have been chosen based on rigorous selection criteria. In fact, we reject 98 out of 100 local travel agencies, and thereby giving you access to the top 1-2% local travel experts.
  • Secure Online Payment and Financial Guarantee Each and every trip is required to go through Bookmundi's secure payment platform, powered by Stripe and supported by SSL. All payments are therefore carried out in secure manners. We are furthermore member of the Danish Travel Fund which gives you a 100% financial guarantee for any money you pay on Bookmundi, even if we went bankrupt (which we we will not!).
  • Trip Replacement or 100% Reimbursement Bookmundi has hand-picked your local travel expert. Our role, as your trusted third party, is therefore to make sure that your entire experience runs as seamless and secure as possible. We guarantee to you that in the unlikely event where a local travel expert cancels your trip after your deposit or full payment has been made, we commit to replacing these services with another equally qualified agency so that your trip can go ahead as planned, or failing to replace it, we will give you a 100% reimbursement.
