  • Taste the traditional spices and dishes of real Morocco
  • Eat dinner in the unique atmosphere at Djemaa El-Fna
Marrakech is the heart of Morocco’s world-renowned culinary contribution, and there is no better way to experience the fine flavors of the city than by wandering the markets with a local guide. You will be shown places you never knew existed, matched with flavors you have never before tasted, and learn the significance and meaning of food in the history and culture of this colourful and buzzing country. Such history will be felt and explained in the historical Djemaa El-Fna Square, as we see the place home to decades of trading, and move off to experience the tastes of the streets and alleys around.

The links between culture, tradition and local eating will be explained and become more clear as we sample all varieties of Moroccan snacks and delights, stopping by stalls and stores that are not marked on the tourist map. Whether cured meats or fresh olives, your guide will know exactly where to find them, and will have an array of intriguing stories behind each morsel you consume. We will wander through the souks, trying traditional breads and learning about the traditional preservation of meat.

As is customary, no visit to Marrakech would be complete without wandering the famous spice markets, smelling and tasting the exotic offerings, and being enchanted by colours that are bright, bold and enticing. You will learn about the reason that spices are so important to the history and people of Morocco, as we move on to finish our day of sensory overload with a dinner back at the Heritage-listed Djemaa El-Fna. Here we will eat amidst a cloud of snake charmers and mischievous monkeys, with the atmosphere creating a completely unforgettable experience.

“I enjoyed the tour as we learned a lot and tried foods that we wouldn't have even known about without the guide. I didn't appreciate the stop at the natural pharmacy. They closed us into a room for a presentation and then pressured us to buy very expensive items. We felt that we had to buy something or they wouldn't let us leave. Everything was way overpriced and not what we wanted at all. I don't like feeling forced to buy.”

“Mustapha was an amazing guide - I was very glad to have him lead us through the winding streets and sample all the incredible selections of food from this "something new around every corner" type of city”

“Did three tours in Marrakech, and each one was sufficiently different to provide a good insight into the city, history, culture and food. Mustapha on the Shopping Secrets of the Medina was particularly good - understanding what I wanted from the tour and only taking me to the relevant places (and not to the ones where he got best commission!). It may have helped I was the only one on the tour, but I got to see the souks in great detail without getting lost (which is far too easy to do!). The foodie trip was also great with some fantastic food at places I probably wouldn't have gone to, and the palaces tour was great to learn about the history.”
Good to know Dress standard: Morocco is considered by many to be a liberal Muslim country. Many Moroccan women do not wear headscarves, for example, but you may find that Morocco is very conservative compared to what you’re used to at home, so you should dress accordingly.

As a general guideline your shoulders, chest, and knees should be covered at all times. Wearing shorts (men or women), low-cut tops, and showing midriff is not recommended as it will restrict your entry into buildings of a religious nature and family homes. Covering these parts of your body will be considered as respectful amongst the locals.

Lightweight sleeved shirts, trousers and skirts are respectful, cover your body, and keep you cool in the heat.

As this is an evening tour, please bring a sweater or jumper in case it gets cool after dark.

Child Policy: This is a child-friendly tour. Children between the ages of 6 and 11 inclusively are permitted on this tour at the rate listed above. Please select ‘child’ above when booking. Children under the age of 6 are permitted to join this tour free of charge. Please inform us at the time of booking if you’ll be bringing a child under the age of 6. You can do so in the special request box on the checkout page.
